  • Black Midwives and Healers Before 1900

What project type are you doing?

I am completing a research report for this project

What have you completed so far?

I have chosen my topic and started learning about the history of Black midwives in the United States. Ive been researching how these women used healing knowledge and traditions passed down from African cultures and how they cared for both Black and white families, especially in rural areas where hospitals were not available. This research has helped me better understand how important they were to early health care and to the well-being of their communities.

What else do you need to do for the project?

Additional researching to be done, try to find additional historical sources, including specific examples of Black midwives and healers from before 1900, and write and revise the main body of my paper.

    1. Research your topic. For this project, research (and then writing) is the main chuck of your work. Use our library course page located in the Start Here Module to access the library and other sources that can be used for this project. You MUST use scholarly sources. You can easily find acceptable sources through the Valencia library and more that our linked in the course library guide. https://libguides.valenciacollege.edu/c.php?g=1332097&p=9810919Use of websites such as History.com, Wikipedia, Britannica, or similar will receive a significant point deduction. You need to use sources that were written by experts in the field. If you are unsure about the source you want to use, double-check with me.Unapproved sources will face a point deduction. Note that it will probably be while you are researching your topic that you find the specific part of your topic that you want to focus on. You can keep it broad while (searching for information on your topic but should narrow it down when working on the project.
    2. Write your paper. In a paper of at least 1,500 words discuss your topic. It should be more than just a surface overview. Try to focus on a particular aspect of your topic and dig deep into it. For example, if you pick a person, you can provide a short overview of their lives in the introduction, but then try to focus on a certain event or period in their lives.
    3. Cite your sources. You should cite in (2) two places in the text and at the end of your paper you need to have a work cited/bibliography. In the text, you can use either footnotes or in-text citations to show where you are using the information from your sources. In the work cited/bibliography, you need to show all the sources used for the paper. You can use MLA, Chicago, or APA to cite your sources, but you must be consistent and follow the respective formatting guidelines.
  • Listicle Assignment: Five Things to Know about the Struggles…

Five Things to Know about the Struggles of the American Military as an International Powerhouse

After the Second World War, the United States became the most significant military force in the Free World, a power that would change its role in the world. However, the type of international system the United States operated within and the creation of major nuclear capabilities had a significant impact on warfare in the second half of the 20th century, changes to which the United States tried to adapt.

From 1945 until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the American government and military would participate in major conflicts and small wars tied to American concerns over the rise of communism and the power of the USSR. These events would have a significant adverse effect on the image of the American military.

Then, in the last years of the 20th century and the first years of the 21st century, the country would become the worlds peacekeeper and nation-builder, as well as the political and military (and sometimes economic) leader of the entire world. The American military, used to the evolution of its role and image, would navigate this period with one eye on its duties and the other on reshaping the negative reputation it had gained during the Cold War.

In this assignment, you will create a listicle discussing the most important elements of the struggles of the United States military as an international powerhouse. According to Wikipedia, a listicle is an article that is structured as a list, which is often fleshed out with additional text relating to each item. A typical listicle will have a title describing a specific number of items contained within, along with subsequent subheadings within the text for each entry. Basically, it is the combination of a list and an article.

You should pick the most critical aspects of these topics in your opinion, and you should write at least one paragraph containing at least five complex sentences about each of these choices.

Be specific and concise. You shouldnt give background information. You should use key terms and specific information that demonstrate how the issue or event is critical to understanding the U.S. military’s difficulties as the leader of the Free World.

*Note that the materials from Modules Six and Seven are relevant to this assignment.

You can create this listicle as a Word document or a Sway Presentation. All major assertions and information taken from the course materials should be cited, and you should write in a formal manner.
