  • Session 5 Final Paper

Research two popular artists of any century who have contrasting styles (see ). Your paper should thoughtfully discuss:

    • What is their world view as communicated in their artwork?
    • By contemplating their expressions of art and their history as artists, how do you believe they may be similar?
    • What do you personally like about their art?
    • How does their culture or society influence their style?
    • Why are these two artists so appreciated by the larger community?

    Your paper must also include:

    • How your current understanding of the art world may or may not have an influence on your personal world view.
    • A minimum of 4 references cited and referenced according to APA guidelines.

The research paper must be 4-5 typed pages (not including the cover and reference page). You are not required to include pictures depicting the artists work, however if you do choose to include them, they may not take up more than the equivalent of one page. Your paper will be evaluated on accurate, college-level writing skills. Expressions should be concise and meaningful, and resources well documented. Correct syntax is expected, along with adherence to APA format.

If using the same artists in your session 5 paper as your session 5 slideshow, avoid duplicating your writing across both (self-plagiarism). Perhaps you have two artists identified for your slideshow, but struggle to find enough info to write a full-length paper on them. In this case, consider two additional artists (for which more research material is available) for your paper.

use for one of the references please include page number if possible Kleiner, F. S. (2020). Gardner’s art through the ages: A global history (16th ed.). Cengage Learning.

  • Annotated Bibliography Mary Cassatt

    Annotated Bibliography: Mary Cassatt

Sandra Forty. (2013). Mary Cassatt. Taj Books International.

Mary was most known for her painting pastels and prints of mothers and their children. Cassatt also painted her mother and sister. At the age of 15 she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The main argument was that for one her dad was not a fan of her wanting to become and artist and that it was more of a struggle for females than males wanting to become an artist.

I do believe that this source was useful and reliable. The document gives a lot of great information about the struggles and the accomplishments the Cassatt went through in her life.

All this information can be used for a research project because in goes in delph of her life like I said before if shows her struggles but it tells how she did not give up and that her work was being noticed by people who believed in here and wanted to help her work become more.

Denenberg, D., & Roscoe, L. (2002). Mary Cassatt. 50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet, 30.

The document talked about how women as not made to have careers, they should be at home doing mother and with things. Was caught my attention the most was her father saying, I would almost rather see you dead. because she wants to become an artist.

This information was a little useful to know that all of the teachers and artist were mostly men but Cassatt did not let that stop her, she knew she wanted to become an artist and that is what she did by studying/worked in France, Italy, and Spain.

This document could not be used for a research paper; I dont feel like there is enough information but enough to really get a little information on what her father was like and how she was not going to let the men discourage her to follow her dreams.

Cassatt, Mary. (2018). Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, 1.

This document is more of a timeline and gives some good points of view on Cassetts work. It just tells some of her most important parts of her life I feel life.

I do feel this information is useful when you need a time frame of certain events, and it gives brief information about her accomplishments during that time frame.

I do think some of this information could be used in a research paper I would, but more information would need to be looked up to go with this information to add a little bit more detail.

Denker, E., & National Gallery of Art, W. D. (1998). Mary Cassatt: Celebrating Everyday Life. Teachers Guide. School Arts: Looking/Learning.

In this document, it explains the details of the painting, the technique of the paintbrushes, and the neutral and dark tones of the painting, and even using bright and broad colors and brushstrokes.

This is a document is useful and does give great information about Cassetts paintings before she joined the impressionist group and after. I also like how it talked about her painting The little Girl in a Blue Armchair and how she liked the natural capture or the little girl verses an appealing look that someone just wants to see.

I think this article gives great information for research papers and ever gives quotes that Cassatt as stated. This artical just digs more into the style of the painting which I think is different and interesting.

Potter, P. (2006). Women Caring for Children in the Floating World. Emerging Infectious Diseases, 12(11), 16.

This article was explaning not only her life but the painting The Childs Bath. Where she is explaining the woman caring for the child and how the bond of something that simple and be amazing. I like how it also is about how a mother is the one caring for her child and not a caretaker; it is showing the practice of hygiene.

I do feel that this information is useful pertaining to the artwork of the Childs bath. Yes, it explains her life, but it goes in details of a women caring for a child in a private moment.

I do think again this this article is useful if you are just wanting to know about the painting of The Childs bath and the depth of them looking down, what the women is wearing the details of the child and the carpet on the floor.

Cartagena, R. (2024, July 10). Mary Cassatt painted two works for the Pennsylvania State Capitol. Why she never sent them remains a mystery. Philadelphia Inquirer, The (PA).

This article is about two paintings by Mary Cassatt that did not make it to a museum. There is no trace of what happens to them, but it states that there was a graft scandal so maybe that has something to do with it I am not too sure.

I am not sure on this information just because there is no evidence to prove what happens to the two paintings and it just doesnt make sense it kind of seems more of hearsay and no one is really digging into it. But I could be wrong with myself.

I do not believe that I would use this for research. It doesnt give much information to me far had anything but her not sending two paintings but then they are not sure if she sent them or not due to no proof.

Sharp, K., & Clarke, J. (1998). Mary Cassatt: Modern artist, modern woman. USA Today Magazine, 127(2640), 36.

This article is about her life of course but explains more or her sister who she was close to and how she passed and cared for her parents. But this article goes into almost all the paintings she has done and what year and where the painting was placed.

I do feel like this article was helpful and gives great information on each painting as well as her life story.

I also feel that this article would be great for a research paper. I think that it gives great information about how she became an artist and the steps it took for her to get there even though there was a lot of disapproval.
