A painting depicts a human figure standing alone in an empty space, dominated by dark colors, dim lighting, and a single light source that highlights the figure’s face. The lines used tend to be sharp and rigid.
Analyze the work based on the elements and principles of art and explain the possible symbolic meaning the artist intended to convey!
List and explain the six social functions of artor the purposes for which humans create art. Give an example of a work that illustrates each of the functions and explain why you selected this work to exemplify this function.
Your essay should be a minimum of 2 pages double spaced, include references to the text, and follow APA formatting guidelines.
1. Start this assignment by looking through Chapters 14 through 23 in the course textbook to find artworks that grab your attention. You are being asked to look through these chapters to expose you to a wide variety of artworks from different parts of the world and from different time periods. Use the arrows at the top of each of the pages to move forward or backward, and make sure to scroll all the way down each page to view all the artworks and their information.
2. You will choose 2 very different artworks from different chapters to be able to see different cultures and/ or time periods. In addition, choose works that are very different in the following ways:
2D and 3D
fine art and applied art/ craft.
representational and non-representational
naturalistic, idealized, abstract, surreal, or expressive, etc.
3. Find images of the artworks you chose. Include the pictures directly into your document.
Make sure the images are not too large, but not too small that it is hard to see details.
Do not send separate links or upload attachments.
4. Research each of your chosen artworks by reading about them or looking online for more information.
5. Then in a well written and detailed paragraph for each work of art (write directly under each image for each work), your post should address the following:
Specify the chapter and page number where you found the work of art you chose (this is very important–do not forget this step).
List the title, artist, culture or country and date of the work.
Briefly describe the content (subject matter) and iconography, context (background) and basic information on the visual form (type of art). Use vocabulary from Chapter 2 and items in
State whether it is considered a fine art or applied art or craft work and the reasoning why it falls into that particular category. Refer to chapter 1 and Engage and Learn.
Choose at least 2 different stylistic categories of the artwork based on its appearance. Refer to Chapter 2. For example: representational and naturalistic, etc. and briefly explain why.
And lastly, what theme or themes do you feel it represents or illustrates and why? Refer to themes in Chapter 3.
Repeat these steps for both of artworks you chose.
Compose a 500-1000 word visual analysis of a work selected from the list below.
A visual analysis addresses the significant visual elements and their arrangement within the work. Review chapters 3-7 on the visual elements and the principles of design.
In my experience when reading secondary sources talking about a reading (image), its important to pay attention to the structure and introduction, middle and conclusion of the article you are reading. The articles and essays should serve as a model for you to learn and emulate from the writers. You should take into consideration the writers argument and evidence of support the writer uses in unifying the piece of writing. When you are writing about a text/image you should provide a central focus and direction of your paper. Its a general rule to construct a thesis statement and it should leave no room for ambiguity. It should focus on a specific aspect of the topic rather than being overtly broad. An analytical thesis offers a critical interpretation or analysis of a topic or text/image. It should offer a claim that can be supported with textual evidence. A strong thesis statement clearly expresses the main argument or idea of the paper, providing a central focus and direction for the paper. It should be concise and supported with evidence. We will continue in the upcoming weeks to build on constructing theses and supporting your thesis with primary (Image) and secondary sources (Research). Please pay attention to the essence of what an analytical thesis should sound and look like, see below.
…visual information can often provide nuance that words cannot describe so elegantly (Seymour).
Instructions
Choose an image of your own (photo or painting) and draw from Virginia Seymours article, Cultivating the Art of Slow Looking.
Then apply the same reading to your image. Seymour talks about, visual nuance, Subject, Foreground and Background. Refer to these words similarly to Seymour when describing your own image.
Audience: Scholars interested in reding visual images.
Requirements: Ms Word or pdf, MLA formatting: proper heading, indentations and spacing, times new roman, 12-point fonts and double spaced.
Upload the image or copy and paste in paper.
ReflectionAsk yourself, What visual nuance convey hidden meaning?, What are some meanings that were not initially apparent in my image?.
topicDiscussion Forum-Question Module 3 Chapter 1 Prehistoric Art AND Lecture Videos for the topic Discuss the ways in which art was used as a vehicle to link the physical with the spiritual world in Paleolithic and Neolithic communities. Note: Please make sure that you have read and understand the requirements for the discussion questions spelled out in Writing requirements-Assignment 1.2 for module 1. This is an AI (Artificial Intelligence) restricted assignment. AI restrictions and other writing requirements The use of AI is not permitted for this assignment. Your first paragraph must be declarative in several ways Restate the question Declare your intentions to use (have used) the assigned materials i.e. the book, lecture notes and videos, assigned websites and other links, etc…. Declare your intention to not use (have not used) AI. Example of first paragraph. In this discussion forum I will explore ways that we believe people of the Paleolithic and Neolithic era used art as a way to link the physical and spiritual realms. I will be using the assigned materials such as the book and the class site. And I declare that I have not used AI. Example of second paragraph: One of the first theories that I will discuss concerns sympathetic magic. Many scholars believe that a kind of sympathetic hunting magic could be one way to explain some of the cave paintings. For instance, illustration 1.1 Wounder Bison (Janson 3)shows a painting of a wounded bison. This painting could have been made before the hunt in order to create a favorable outcome. By showing the bison as wounded the hunters project into the future that which they want to come true. These two example paragraphs are simply guides to help you get started. You can rewrite them in any way that fits your style. Watch the video on posting and see the example post in the Example forum Reminders Use images to illustrate your post when appropriate or required. Include the question at the top of your post in your answer (see the student example) Follow all of the writing guidelines from the guide to forums Get your work in early so you can receive feedback. This also gives others time to comment on your work. Remember that you do have the ability to edit your own posting. Your answers should be no shorter than three good paragraphs (around 300-500 words). Double that in some questions. Please review the grading policy for forums. Get your forum answers in on time. Late work may not be accepted. Respond to others. This is an important part of the grade. DISCUSSION – The “Concept-to-Reality” AI Challenge
Objective: Explore how AI can jumpstart the creative process and refine technical models in seconds.
There are a myriad AI design tools these days that you might have used or experimented with.
The purpose of this fun discussion post is THREE-FOLD –
1. To become an active user of 2026 technology
2. Exploring and sharing the results of various tools – tool variety,
3. Experience and conclude on the hypothesis that AI is a co-pilot, not a replacement for technical design skills.
Part 1: Exploration (The 15-Minute Sprint)
Choose any one of the available AI tools and spend 15 minutes generating a “Dream Interior” for a specific client (e.g., a minimalist workspace for a futuristic digital nomad or a biophilic library for a primary school). Suggested few –
Midjourney: Use text prompts to generate 4 high-quality mood board images that capture a specific “vibe” or material palette.
SketchUp Diffusion: If you have a basic SketchUp massing model, use this built-in extension to “re-skin” it in various styles (Industrial, Scandinavian, etc.) with a single click.
Adobe Firefly: Use “Generative Fill” to take a photo of an empty room and add furniture or change the lighting based on your prompts.
These are only suggestions. Feel free to choose any tool.
IMPORTANT – DO NOT SPEND MORE THAN 15 MINUTES ON THE PROMPT
Part 2: Discussion Post (Your Experience)
After your sprint, post the following information in the discussion board:
Name of the tool you chose.
What was your prompt? (You can directly copy and paste the prompt here). If you modified the prompt or built on it, you can list that here as well.
The “Magic” Moment: What was the most surprising or impressive thing the program did with your idea?
The “Glitch” Moment: AI isn’t perfect. Did it struggle with perspective, hands, or specific furniture? How did you try to fix the prompt?
The Professional Pivot: As a designer, how would you use this result to improve your actual SketchUp model? Does it change how you’ll think about materials or lighting in your next rendering?
Part 3: Peer Peer Review
Comment on at least two classmates’ posts. Compare their tool to yours. Which one seems more “ready for a client” and why?
Requirements: Just follow instruction, be simple not too long
