Chapter 67: Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, and Political Protest in European and Mexican Modern Art, 1910-1940

Public art served a powerful purpose in representing Mexican national identity both during and after the Mexican Revolution (1910 – 1920). Mexican Modernists transformed European Modernism, retaining certain visual elements while injecting references to Mexican history, identity, and culture.

Murals became an important form of public art on the walls of public buildings, guided by the work of artists Diego Rivera, Jos Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Their motivation was to make art democratically accessible to people of all social classes.

What are two examples of public murals that you have seen in your life that have represented your own cultural history and identity? These murals may reference your national, regional, or ethnic history and identity.

What do the murals you selected have in common with the murals painted by Mexican artists during/following the Mexican Revolution? How do they differ from those murals?

    10-20 sentences

Word Count: 2,000- 2,500 words (excluding bibliography) Task Requirements Define a Theme: Select a specific area of interest within Museum Education or Outreach. Source Selection: Review at least 1215 scholarly sources, including peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Museum Management and Curatorship, Journal of Museum Education), foundational texts, and relevant “grey literature” (policy papers or major exhibition reports). Critical Analysis: Do not simply describe what each author says. Instead: Compare and contrast different pedagogical approaches. Identify “gaps” in the current literature. Trace the evolution of theory into practice.
