    Week 4 Assignment 1: Please read the following and develop a Facility Improvement Plan. Submit the Facility Improvement Plan in Canvas. Make improvements to your facility and provide a description of the improvements that were made.

    Goal: Address identified facility needs with realistic, actionable improvements, even if students are not directly involved.

    Why This Week Matters:

    Week 4 moves from identifying problems to solving them. Whether working alone or with students, the student teacher takes concrete action to make the facility safer and more efficient. Student involvement adds an important layer of engagement and pride, as they see their efforts improve the space they use every day. These improvements also demonstrate the value of proactive facility management to administration and stakeholders.

    Action Plan( How you will proceed to complete the assignment and submit into Canvas):

    1. Review Week 3 Findings

    Revisit your Safety Inspection Checklist and Facility Needs Report from Week 3.

    Select the top 35 priorities that are realistic to address during this course timeframe.

    2. Develop a Facility Improvement Plan and create a written plan including:

    Tasks to be completed

    Responsible person (yourself or others)

    Materials/tools required

    Cost estimates (if known)

    Target completion timeline

    Organize plan in a clear table format for easy reference.

    3. Implement at Least One Visible Improvement if needed

    Choose one project to complete this week (examples):

    Install or update safety signage or reorganize a storage area or tool wall

    Repair or replace a broken equipment guard or label shelves or create a tool check-out system

    Take before and after photos as evidence of progress.

    4. Document and Monitor

    Record what was completed, who was involved, and any remaining steps.

    Update your Facility Needs Report to reflect what was resolved and what remains pending.

    Goal:

    Engage students in identifying, planning, and implementing facility improvements to foster pride and ownership of their learning environment.

    Suggested Student Activities:

    Student Improvement Teams: Assign groups to brainstorm solutions for hazards or inefficiencies identified in Week 3.

    Mini-Project Implementation: Each group carries out a small improvement task such as reorganizing a cabinet, labeling drawers, hanging safety posters.

    Cost & Materials Exercise: Students research materials needed for improvements and estimate costs.

    Visual Documentation: Students take photos/sketches of before-and-after results and create a short summary for class display.

    Have your students reflect on how the improvements enhance safety, workflow, or efficiency and discuss the process and results.

  • Maintenance Plan and Equipment Request Memo

    Goal: Use Week 1s inventory data to create a clear, actionable Equipment Request Memo and develop a routine Maintenance Plan to ensure the program remains safe, organized, and functional consider involving the students in a way they can be accountable for understanding critical inventory or tools and materials.

    Why This Week Matters:

    Week 2 turns Inventory results into action, helping the student teacher (and optionally, students) shift from documenting what exists to planning for its care and longevity. Whether done alone or with student participation, this process teaches preventive thinking, reinforces workplace safety, and develops management mindset skills that lead directly into Week 3s safety inspection and facility assessment.

    Action Plan ( How you will proceed to complete the assignment):

    1. Review of Inventory Findings:

    Look over Week 1 inventory results and confirm that the data is complete and accurate.

    Highlight equipment in need of servicing, repair, or replacement.

    2. Write the Equipment Memo

    Draft a formal Equipment Request Memo (following the Equipment Request Memo Example) addressed to your supervisor, department head, or yourself.

    Include:

    -List of priority equipment requiring attention

    -Explanation of why maintenance or replacement is needed (safety, functionality, compliance)

    -Recommended action and suggested timeline

    -Program specific needs

    3. Develop a Maintenance Plan

    Create a simple Maintenance Plan (use Maintenance Plan Template) for your lab/program:

    Daily tasks: Tool return, surface cleaning, PPE checks

    Weekly tasks: Lubrication, minor equipment inspections

    Monthly/semester tasks: Deep cleaning, calibration, major equipment servicing

    Record in a digital document, spreadsheet, or wall chart template for future use. ( you make the decision what works best for you)

    4. Instructor Reflection:

    Reflect on the following:

    Observed strengths in the current state of equipment care

    Weaknesses or challenges (lack of documentation, outdated equipment, no schedule)

    Immediate next steps you will take or propose to improve maintenance practices
