Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 61, Subparts A, B, and C explain the basics of pilot certification. They cover general rules, who is eligible to become a pilot, and what student pilots are allowed and not allowed to do.

    Your task has two parts:

    1. Create one original discussion post (at least 200 words)

Choose one of the topic areas below and answer one or more of the questions in that section:

    • Regulatory Intent & Safety
    • Why does the FAA have specific requirements like age, medical certification, and English proficiency for student pilots?
    • How do these rules balance access to flight training with safety?
    • Student Pilot Privileges & Limitations
    • Why are student pilots given limited solo privileges?
    • How do student pilot privileges compare to private pilot privileges, and what does this say about increasing responsibility?
    • Ethical and Practical Dimensions
    • Should the FAA change minimum age requirements based on new technology and training tools?
    • What ethical responsibility do instructors have when approving student solo flights?
    • Personal Reflection & Application
    • What changes would you make to Subparts AC to modernize them?
    • How do these rules help build a strong safety culture in aviation?

    2. Respond to classmates

Write at least two replies to classmates posts.

Each response must be at least 75 words and should add something meaningful (agree/disagree with reasons, give an example, or expand on their idea).

  • Safety Management System (SMS) plan

Management is vested with the authority and responsibility for managing safety risks in the company. This is best accomplished through a robust quality management-based risk management system. Management controls the resources, so it is managements job to ensure that the safety function has what it needs in terms of personnel, expertise, funding, time, and organizational support to satisfy its vital function (Stolzer & Goglia, 2017). Requirements: For the final project in this course, you will submit a Safety Management System (SMS) plan for a fictional aviation organization or business of your choice, subject to my approval. The SMS plan should be submitted as a Word document and must adhere to the structure outlined in FAA Advisory Circular 120-82D, Appendix A (Subparts A-F). This is not a research paper, so APA formatting and citations are not required. The minimum page requirement should be based on covering all the guidelines in the FAA AC 120-82D document, rather than focusing on a specific page count. Develop the plan using critical and creative thinking skills to demonstrate your understanding and application of the SMS concepts covered in this course. Tips for Success: This project is worth 40% of your grade, so start working on it early. Create the basic structure of your document early in the course, and gradually begin filling in the sections as the course progresses. You have the luxury of an unlimited virtual budget! Create a document that exceeds the FAA’s minimum expectationsconsider developing a plan for an airline (or another type of business) that you would feel comfortable entrusting to your family.
