    The Context

    The organisation has recently expanded by acquiring a fast-growing e-commerce retailer that specialises in sustainable products. A newly appointed department head has been given responsibility for leading the integration of the e-commerce operations into the wider business. While the department head has extensive experience in supply chain management and logistics, there are concerns about their ability to inspire and effectively lead a cross-functional team in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. You have been asked to carry out a comprehensive analysis of their leadership approach to determine whether it aligns with the organisations vision, culture, and strategic objectives.

    The Task

    Your task is to write a 2,500-word management report that critically examines the suitability of the Path-Goal approach to leadership in the technology sector. You should base your work around a single organisation in that sector as the case study for this report.

    1. Evaluate the effectiveness of this leadership approach and consider its potential impact on the organisations performance, providing evidence and examples to support your arguments.
    2. Identify warning signs that management should look for as indicators of employee or organisational distress, supported by relevant examples.
    3. Finally, suggest a more suitable leadership style or strategy for this context, backing your recommendation with persuasive evidence and examples.

    This 2,500-word (+/-10%) report should have a front cover with a clear title, your student ID number and word count, an executive summary of no more than 250 words; a contents page; and a maximum of 4 pages of appendices are allowable. Note that these pages’ words are not included in the word count. All words appearing in tables, charts and diagrams are also not included in the word count. There should be a minimum of 15 references from reputable sources, and references should be made using the Harvard system to support your argument. The briefing document should be professionally formatted and presentable to a director of a business.

    Overview: Choose a topic introduced during this course and critique its application within a business context you have flexibility to choose whether this be within an organisational context that you are familiar with or with a company / sector that you have never worked in but may have interest in (provided that you can gather sufficient secondary data on the company to write an informative report).

    On choosing the topic, it is recommended that you liaise with a member of the course team to confirm that the scope of your chosen topic is appropriately focused.

    Report Structure: Your report should consider the following elements.

    • Cover page
    • Report introduction (i.e. overview the structure of your report)
    • Topic introduction (this may include a definition of the topic area, brief rationale for why you have chosen the topic, and an introduction to the organisational context within which it will be applied)
    • Critical analysis (this may include an example of the topic in application*; analysis of the pros/cons of the topic in application within the specific organisational context; evaluation of criticisms and/or limitations of the topic beyond the immediate application context)
    • Draw out key learnings
    • References

    Models and frameworks utilised should be illustrated and then explained within the main report. Illustrations do not contribute towards word count.
