    Current Events

    For Modules 2, 4, 6, & 8 you will select an article from either the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), New York Times (NYT), or the LA Times (LAT). The article must be from either of those three media, and it must be in relation to a managerial concept which we learned in these modules. The article must be a recent article (within the last 6 months). Read the article and then write a 500 word/one page analysis summary. You must also include the link to the article, and use proper APA citation. These summary essays will be submitted in Canvas using Turnitin which will score your paper based on similarity to others’ writings. The summary is due by the stated Sunday @ 11:59pm. Each summary is worth 95 points.

    VVC offers free access to online versions of this media (WSJ, NYT, LAT). Please refer to the video which is in this module to learn how to access these newspapers. The WSJ, NYT, & LAT are grouped into the US Dailies newspapers.

    You will be required to submit your essay using Turnitin. Please refer to the video which is in to learn how to submit your assignment properly.

    1. Choose Your Article

    Pick a current and key article which addresses any of the concepts we learned this week. The article could be from either the WSJ, NYT, or LAT, and can be located in several sections such as:

    • Economy and Markets
    • Business and Finance
    • Politics
    • Technology
    • Global News

    Select articles that you find most relevant or impactful for the week. The articles MUST be accounting related, and they must have relevance to the topics learned in this module. Make a note of the link to the article as well as the title, author(s), and date. You will need to include this information in your analysis summary.

    2. Write a Brief Introduction

    Write a brief introductory paragraph using 3-4 sentences, introduce the focus of your summary. You can mention the overall themes covered in the articles you selected.

    Example sentence:

    “This week’s Wall Street Journal highlights the economic recovery amid global challenges and explores shifts in technology trends.”

    3. Key Issues from Each Article

    The next paragraph should include the following:

    • Title and Source: Mention the article’s title and section.
    • Main Idea/Topic: Summarize the core of the article
    • Key Issues: Include important facts, figures, or insights listed in bullet point format.

    Example:

    • Title and Source: “Global Markets See Surge as Inflation Fears Ease” from the Global News section of WSJ
    • Main Idea/Topic: The article discusses how global stock markets have surged this week as inflation fears subside in the U.S.
    • Key Issues:
    • U.S. inflation data shows signs of easing, encouraging investor confidence.
    • European and Asian markets follow suit, benefiting from strong corporate earnings.
    • Economists predict moderate growth in the upcoming quarter.

    4. Analysis/Personal Insight

    The next 2-3 paragraphs should contain your analysis and personal insight. Here are a few questions to consider.

    • How does the information impact the economy, business, or society?
    • How do the concepts you learned this week relate to the issues in the article?
    • Do you agree or disagree with the viewpoint of the article(s)?

    Example sentence:

    “The easing of inflation concerns may bring a period of stability to the stock market, but investors should remain cautious, as economic factors like global supply chain disruptions still pose risks.”

    5. Conclusion

    Conclusion paragraph should be 3-4 sentences. This is a wrap-up of your analysis paragraphs. You can also make predictions or comment on the future implications of the article(s).

    Example sentence:

    “As inflation pressures remain a key concern for many countries, global markets will likely experience a mix of volatility and growth in the coming months, with ongoing geopolitical tensions influencing investor sentiment.”

    6. Final Touches

    • Make certain that you have your name and course/section number at the top of the paper.
    • Make sure your summary flows logically and remains concise.
    • Stay within the 500 word count/one page limit
    • Be sure to cite properly using APA (see below for examples)
    • Include a link to the article

    Each summary is worth 95 points.

    The summary is due by Sunday 03/01 @ 11:59pm.

    YOU MUST refer to the information page in this module for detailed information about what is expected and how to format your summary.

    Once you turn in your essay, Turnitin will rank it according to similarity between other documents which have been written historically. This helps to prevent plagiarism. Once Turnitin has scored your paper, you can check the results so that you can make corrections to your paper. Your score cannot be higher than 10%. If it is over 10%, you will be allowed to correct your paper and upload it again into Turnitin. In total you are allowed two submissions (initial and corrected). However, your second attempt (corrected) must still be submitted prior to the due date. No late submissions will be accepted.

    If your Turnitin Score and AI Score is:

    0% earns 10 points of extra credit.

    between 2% & 5% earns between 5 & 9 points of extra credit.

    between 6% & 9% earns between 1 & 4 points of extra credit.

    10% is the maximum score acceptable – no extra credit points.
