  • CAPSTON PROJECT

    **Assignment Purpose **

The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop the core components of your capstone project proposal. You will refine your research or project idea by clearly:

    1. Introducing your research aims and questions
    2. Situating your work within relevant academic literature published in the last 5-7 years.
    3. Justifying an appropriate research or project design

This assignment represents a key step toward a well-defined, feasible capstone project.

Students need to write between **1600 and 1800 words **

    **Due: Monday 30th March 2026 **

    Assignment Task

You are required to produce a written report that includes the following three sections:

    Part 1: Introduction [400 words]

In this section, you will introduce your project idea. You need to start by stating your research question and explaining why it is important. Second, what the issue or problem is that needs to be addressed.

Think about the following questions when you write your introduction:

    • What is the aim of your research/project? What will you focus on, and why?
    • What is your research question? What are your sub-questions (if any)?
    • How does the research contribute to the UAE context? (specify what qualifies: policy, practice, setting, or population) (at least 1-2 UAE context sources, e.g., agendas, visions, and SDGs)
    • Briefly reflect on one potential limitation of your research question (for example, whether it is too broad or too narrow).

Part 2: Literature review [700-800 words]

In this section, you will present a review of the literature about your chosen topic. The review should:

Draw on 7 peer-reviewed articles that are directly relevant to your research or project idea.

Summarise, synthesise, and critically evaluate the literature, showing how studies connect, overlap, or differ (organise thematically; not one paragraph per article)

Identify a clear gap in the literature by explaining what is missing, underexplored, or unresolved in prior research.

Explain how your research, project, or product aims to address this gap.

All projects, including design- or community-based projects, must be grounded in relevant academic literature.

Part 3: Logic and method [500 words]

In this section, you will explain the reasoning behind your research, project, or product and describe how your chosen research design and methods will support answering your research question.

    1. Logic of the research design
    • Explain your selected design and why this design makes sense for your research question(s). Use up to3references to support your claims.

    a. Methods

Clearly outline the methods you will use. Depending on your project type, this may include:

    • Data collection: Describe how you will gather information (e.g., surveys, interviews, observations). Include examples such as a draft list of interview/survey questions and a description of who your study participants will be.
    • Data analysis: Describe how you will analyse your data (statistical analysis, qualitative analysis (thematic analysis)), justifying why these methods of analysis are suitable for your data.
    • Project/product** design**: If you are creating a product or project, identify the tools, technologies, or resources you will need to build and test it.

    b. Connection to logic

    • Explain how the methods you select will help you carry out your logical design and achieve your project goals. – Why are you selecting that method to help you answer your research question? Why is it better than another method? Think critically about your choices.

THIS WAY YOU WILL HAVE 10 REFERENCES IN TOTAL FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT

    Footnotes

You are required to footnote LOs covered in Unit 3 in this assignment:

#LO3_evaluate: Identify and utilise appropriate measures and rubrics to develop and evaluate work products.

#LO4_organize: Select, organize, and present essential content for an intended purpose.

#SourceQuality: Distinguish between categories and types of information to determine source quality.

#ProfessionalWorkProduct: Follows the established guidelines for the task and academic conventions in writing and presentations.

    LO Grading

Your assignment will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

Clarity and focus of the research question and project purpose

Relevance and quality of academic sources used

Depth of synthesis and critical engagement in the literature review

Clear identification of a research or practice gap

Logical alignment between research question, design, and methods

Professional academic writing and adherence to APA convention

Style Guidelines: follow each of the guidelines below to avoid penalties

    • Use your research topic as the title of your paper.
    • Footnote LO usage (do not use an appendix for this). In the footnote text (at the bottom of the page), provide the hashtag of the LO and a short explanation of your application. Help the professor understand exactly why this constitutes a strong application. For a given LO, create at most one footnote per page. Footnotes do not count towards the word limits for assignments.

You need to insert in-text citations to support any ideas or claims you put throughout the paper (introduction, literature review, and the justification of your research methods).

    • Use APA formatting for your references ( is information on APA formatting).

600-word speech script + 5-page PPT Please read the assignment requirements very carefully and make sure the presentation time is followed strictly. For the PPT and the script, please clearly indicate which page of the script corresponds to which slide. For the one-minute Q&A section, could you also help me think of some possible questions that I may be asked, together with simple answers? Please read through all the materials I sent. My part is competitive analysis (Week 5), so please pay special attention to that. This is very important, because if this part is misunderstood, it may affect the whole task. If you come across anything uncertain, or any issue that could affect the completion of the work, please contact me first instead of starting directly. It would be quite troublesome to make major changes later, so I really hope it can be done correctly the first time. Also, please keep the language in the script very simple and basic. This is also very important, because it is for a presentation, and if the script is too complicated, it may need to be revised and simplified again.

Businesses create goods or services demanded by consumers. The variability of demand depends on the type of good or service produced. For example, if the good does not have a lot of substitute products (e.g., necessary prescription drugs), demand will not fluctuate greatly with price changes. On the other hand, if the good has many substitutes available (e.g., fast food), demand will fluctuate with price changes.

This concept is called price elasticity of demand. If a good or service has an elastic demand, demand will vary greatly with price increases. If a good or service has an inelastic demand, demand will not vary greatly with price changes.

Consider a product you are familiar with and the company that produces that product. Think about the market the company operates in (as discussed earlier).

In a PowerPoint presentation that contains 1012 slides (excluding the title and references and with 200250 words of speaker notes on each slide), explain the following:

    • Introduce the business you have chosen. What market does the company operate in? What products or services does it sell? What category of goods does this product or service fall under (e.g., luxury, normal, inferior, substitute, complementary, and so on)?
    • Who are the consumers of the good or service? How is the good or service marketed?
    • Discuss elasticity of demand and include a graph to illustrate elasticity of demand.
    • Explain the elasticity of demand for your product or service. Is the product demand elastic, or is it inelastic? Include a graph to represent the elasticity of demand for your chosen product or service.
    • Discuss the relationship between elasticity of demand and pricing of your chosen product or service. Include a graph. You may use hypothetical numbers to illustrate your conceptual observations and understanding of the concept of elasticity of demand for your chosen product or service.
    • How does the elasticity of demand for the good or service change how you market your good or service? For example, if your good has few substitutes or many substitutes, what can be done to increase demand during an economic downturn?

  • Assessment 1 MBA FPX5910

Create a 24 page (single-spaced) project summary that describes your chosen organization, defines the scope of a business problem or opportunity in that organization, and provides a strategy for how you will go about your capstone project. Include a discussion of the type of data you will need, and how your topic allows you to demonstrate each of the MBA program outcomes.

Then create a 25 page annotated outline that includes the sections to be analyzed, ethical decision-making aspects of the topic, main points of the recommendation, and credible evidence you plan to use for supporting the analysis and recommendations.

    Collapse AllIntroduction

This course revolves around the creation of a single, significant capstone project. In other words, a project that caps off your learning and your program, allowing you to demonstrate the competencies of leadership and collaboration, ethical and evidence-based decision making, and innovative and strategic thinking.

For your capstone, you will choose a real company and analyze it in a way that demonstrates your understanding of the MBA program outcomes. You will turn your analysis of that company into a written report with recommendations and a formal presentation for your intended audience.

    Project Summary

Having a solid, doable scope is an important part of creating a successful capstone project, and the exact scope is up to you. To help you establish a realistic scope, you will start with the project summary. Be careful to consider the scalability of your project scope, ensuring that it demonstrates your ability to lead in a business environment and showcases your achievement of all MBA program outcomes.

    Examples

A scope that is poorly defined:

    • I want to write a general analysis of the bookseller, Barnes & Noble.
    • This topic is too broad, and it would probably require hundreds of pages to address all of the possible analyses.

A scope that is better defined:

    • I want to focus on how Barnes & Noble has managed to survive the Internet age while Borders has crumbled.
    • What makes this a better scope? The scope is grounded in a problem (such as how to survive Internet competition) or opportunity (such as the area lacking a business that you plan to open), which allows you to focus the analysis.
    • It must also allow for you to analyze and suggest evidence-based recommendations, takeaways, or actionable next steps as the crux of your project.

Important note: You must be able to prove the problem with evidence. So in the above example, you would also provide data showing that Barnes & Noble is profitable, perhaps comparing Barnes & Noble income or profits to Borders in its last years.

    Annotated Outline

While everyone has their own process for writing, creating an outline is often an important early step in the process in all types of writing, even for the most seasoned writers. By creating an outline, you draft a plan that organizes your thoughts, helps you see gaps in your thought process, and enables you to decide where in your paper you will address particular issues.

An annotated outline is a document that organizes the main sections to be included in your paper. The annotations are based on thinking through your approach to the paper and developing enough detail that anyone who reads the outline can follow your thought process.

The purpose of this annotated outline is as follows:

    • To build an annotated outline that shows the key sections of your analysis, the ethical considerations, and the leadership and collaboration aspects that you intend to include in your capstone project. With this outline, faculty can understand the organization and purpose of your paper; upon approval, you may move forward to writing the capstone project (Assessment 2).
    • To help you manage your work because you will need to start researching now (if you have not already) to create your annotated outline.
    • To demonstrate that you know how to cite in APA format by including some quotations or paraphrases from researched sources. The sources you include in the outline may or may not be used in your actual paper.
    • To demonstrate your ability to create a well-organized document, suitable for academic or business, that meets established criteria.

    Capstone Project Summary

For this section of the assessment, introduce the organization you have chosen to research, why you chose it, the scope of your project, and how it will allow you to demonstrate all of the MBA program outcomes.

Write a 24 page project summary, in professional writing style, that details the topic and scope of your capstone project. Your project summary should be clear and concise yet thorough enough for faculty to provide feedback and guidance. Your project summary should be well-organized and include the following section headers:

    • Organization: Describe the background of your chosen organization.
    • Provide a brief background of your selected organization. For instance, discuss its product lines, number of years in business, organization structure, location, et cetera.
    • If you choose an organization for which you work, your introduction must include a statement that you received permission to use the company from a supervisor.
    • Scope: Describe a business topic, problem, or opportunity within that organization that you intend to research.
    • Describe the problem or opportunity you see that makes this company a good choice.
    • Explain the scope of your project by clearly identifying the topics or areas you intend to research.
    • Provide a general action plan on how you will research, analyze, and identify recommendations or solutions to this business challenge or opportunity.
    • Establish the premise of your paper (the problem or need) with evidence. For example, if your plan is to talk about how Dillard’s department store can come back after a huge financial loss, you should include citations that establish its dramatic financial loss.
    • Data: Explain the level of accessibility to data necessary to examine the chosen business topic, problem, or opportunity.
    • Discuss the general type of data sources you will be using to inform your analysis. Provide at least two specific sources that you are considering. These resources should be from credible sources such as the Wall Street Journal, IBIS, et cetera. Use the excellent for locating credible resources from the Capella library’s business databases and article collections.
    • Include the process or steps on how you will access the data necessary for analysis of a business topic or challenge.
    • Identify any special requirements that you might need to meet to access the data you will need.
    • Explain risks you think will be encountered and the mitigation plan to manage those risks.
    • Demonstrating MBA program outcomes: Explain how your topic will allow you to showcase your leadership ability by demonstrating each MBA program outcome.
    • List out each program outcome clearly, and then explain in 34 sentences how your topic will allow you to demonstrate each. The MBA program outcomes are listed in the MBA Capstone Project Description document.
    • Identify specific items of your project summary that you believe demonstrates the outcome.
    • Conclusion.
    • Wrap up your paper with a clear, concise conclusion that summarizes your plan. Just a couple sentences is fine.

    Annotated Outline

For this part of the assessment, create an annotated outline that provides a framework of your capstone project. Begin by reviewing the . Your annotated outline must state the name of your chosen organization and must include the following items:

    • Identify the main sections to be developed in the paper and tie them to the project objectives.
    • In your key sections, you should use at least four main headings; these sections make up the body of your outline.
    • Each heading must have at least two sub-points to develop the detail required.
    • Include a description of each major point.
    • Identify where each supporting reference will be integrated.
    • Include at least one reference to support each major point of the paper.
    • Incorporate relevant quotes or paraphrases from a source that you might use for support, with an APA in-text citation.
    • Identify main points that address ethical aspects associated with your chosen business.
    • Ethical considerations/aspects should also be one of the headings of your outline.
    • Use the program outcomes to help determine the areas of ethics that you might want to cover.
    • Include at least one reference to elaborate on how you intend to cover ethics in your project.
    • Identify main points that address leadership and collaboration aspects associated with your chosen business.
    • Leadership and collaboration considerations/aspects should also be one of the headings of your outline.
    • Review the program outcomes to determine the areas of leadership and collaboration that you should consider.

Your annotated outline section of the assessment should have these section headers:

    • An executive summary.
    • An introduction.
    • The body of your outline should comprise at least four main headings with additional subheadings and points. (Never use the word Body as a heading or subheading.)
    • A conclusion.
    • References. Use APA style and formatting for all the sources you use in the annotated outline.

    Submission Requirements

Your assessment should also meet the following requirements:

    • Style:
    • Your project summary should follow the corresponding MBA Academic and Professional Document guidelines (available in the ) for academic style. It should be single-spaced, use subheadings, and be well-organized and well-written.
