  • Bridging Cultural Communication Gaps

    Objective:

To explore and understand communication differences between your own culture and another culture of interest, and to develop strategies for bridging those differences in effective communication.

    Instructions:

    • Select a Culture: Choose a culture that interests you and is different from your own. This could be based on ethnicity, nationality, religion, or any other cultural identity.
    • Conduct Research or Interviews:
    • If possible, interview someone from the selected culture (a peer, friend, or family member). If interviews are not feasible, conduct research using credible sources such as books, academic articles, or reputable websites.
    • Gather information on the following aspects of communication:
    • Verbal Communication: Language, tone, expressions, formal vs. informal speech
    • Non-Verbal Communication: Body language, gestures, eye contact, personal space
    • Cultural Norms: Common practices or taboos in communication, politeness strategies, communication hierarchies
    • Context: High-context vs. low-context communication, direct vs. indirect communication styles, etc.
    • Identify Key Differences: Based on your research or interview, identify several major differences in communication practices between your culture and the culture you’ve chosen. These could include:
    • Differences in greeting rituals (e.g., handshakes vs. bowing)
    • Differences in the role of silence or pauses in conversation
    • Preferences for formal vs. informal modes of address
    • Cultural taboos or sensitive topics that affect communication
    • Bridge the Differences: Imagine you are interacting with someone from that culture. Reflect on the following:
    • How would you adapt your communication to be respectful and effective?
    • What strategies would you use to navigate potential misunderstandings or discomforts?
    • If you encounter a communication barrier, what steps would you take to overcome it?
    • Are there specific cultural practices (e.g., greeting customs or small talk) that you would need to adjust your behavior to match?
    • Present Your Findings:
    • Prepare a written report or a short presentation summarizing:
    • The communication differences between your culture and the chosen culture.
    • The potential challenges of interacting with someone from that culture.
    • Your strategies for bridging those differences.

    Guiding Questions to Consider:

    • What communication differences between cultures could lead to misunderstandings or discomfort?
    • How does the cultural context shape communication behavior (e.g., collectivism vs. individualism)?
    • How can you use active listening, empathy, and patience to bridge these differences?
    • What is the role of cultural sensitivity in fostering effective communication?

    Assessment Criteria:

    • Research Depth: Demonstrates understanding of cultural differences through detailed research or insightful interview findings.
    • Relevance and Practicality: Presents practical strategies for bridging communication differences, demonstrating cultural sensitivity.
    • Clarity and Coherence: Clear, organized, and thoughtful presentation of findings and strategies.
    • Engagement with Cultural Practices: Shows genuine effort to understand the cultural nuances of the selected culture and integrates those nuances into the communication strategies.

The written plan should be comprehensive and complete, but well-organized so that a reader can move through it quickly. Dont bog down the body of the plan with vast quantities of minute detail. Put those in well-labeled appendices and refer to them in the body.

You may use the provided financial templates to complete the appropriate sections of the business plan.

The length will depend on the business idea; however, most ideas should require somewhere between 25 and 50 pages, preceded by an executive summary not exceeding one page in length. Appendices may contain charts, tables, graphs, articles, research reports, etc. You must support your statements with facts from your research without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary or undigested data. • BUSI 745 Discussion Thread: Promotion

For this discussion, you will research peer-reviewed journal articles on one of the 4Ps Promotion. Keyword search terms might include the following: Personal selling, advertising, public relations, and sales promotion (contests, coupons, and more). Once you have selected your peer-reviewed journal articles, post a synopsis of the major points from the research you read.

The student will post one thread of at least 750 words not to exceed 1,250 words by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of the assigned Module: Week.

    THREADS

For each thread, students must support their assertions with at least 2 scholarly authored citations in current APA format, plus at least one new reference from a Marketing Journal to support the topic researched. That is a minimum of 3 scholarly sources. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years, except for the Bible. Students should also integrate minimum of three scripture verses into the discussion.

Comments from my professor about my last discussion for reference:

The vast majority of this submission lacked sufficient academic support. There was only a single reference (and only used once) that was above/outside a Marketing focus.

Only one reference that was Marketing focused.

Handful of minor issues throughout such as missing a Running Head, DOI, italics, and appropriate use of year following author’s name throughout.

Please make sure all sources used are researchable and legitimate as the professor researches every single reference used.
