    Purpose

Although field trips seem like an idea of the past, we can only hope that we will be able to do them again someday soon. Planning a field trip is a lot of work, and one of the most important parts is parent notification.

    Instructions

    Complete the following steps:

    • Read
    • Read the following scenario:
    • Please create a field trip note that could be sent home to families for an upcoming trip to the pumpkin patch. Each child will need $5, a sack lunch, tennis shoes or boots, and a jacket. Family members can also attend for an additional $5/person. Think about how this request will affect families in poverty situations. How can you design the note to be inclusive yet empathetic to each family’s situation?
    • Please feel free to be creative, use clip art, color, or select a template to use. I am looking for an overall professional appearance and a message that allows ALL families to participate and engage in their child’s learning and development.

NAEYC Key Assessment #5: Our Diverse Community Family Tree Celebrating Families and Building Partnerships Overview: This Key Assessment engages preservice teachers in exploring family diversity, community, and partnership in early childhood settings. Across five parts, candidates design and implement (or plan, when implementation is not permitted) activities that promote culturally responsive, inclusive practices aligned with NAEYC standards. Course Context: This project will be completed in conjunction with your field placement and through online submissions. Some components may be adapted or completed hypothetically if your placement site restricts parent or family participation. Documentation, planning, and reflection remain essential to demonstrate mastery of the standards. Submission Format: Each part will be submitted separately throughout the term for feedback. You will compile all revised parts into your Key Assessment #5 Portfolio at the end. Part 1: Introducing the Concept of Family, Community, Diversity, and Partnership (NAEYC 1c, 2a, 3d, 6b) Objective: To introduce the concept of family diversity and partnership between families and educators while encouraging engagement through inclusive communication. • Vision

    Critical Thinking Discussion (Chapter 2)

Chris is beginning his third year as the head teacher in a mixed-age preschool classroom. He recently attended an in-service program that addressed childrens vision development and conditions that interfere with learning. Chris is anxious to put this newly acquired information to use.

For several weeks this fall, he has noticed that 4-year-old Lynette often loses interest during story times. She leaves her place in the circle and crawls closer to him in an apparent effort to look at pictures in the books he reads from and shows to the children. Chris has also noted that Lynette lowers her head close to any puzzles, manipulatives, or art projects that she is working on. When he shared these observations with Lynettes parents, they also expressed concern about her clumsiness and her need to see things up close.

Chris discussed this information with the school nurse who tested Lynettes vision on two different occasions and determined that it was not within normal limits. The nurse arranged a meeting with Lynettes parents to discuss the screening results and encourage them to make an appointment with an eye specialist for further testing. Lynettes father mentioned that he was recently laid off from his job and they no longer had health insurance.

Discuss the teachers role and professional responsibility in identifying children who may have a health condition that affects their ability to learn.
