  • Preliminary Paper

*The purpose of this assignment is to critically analyze a complex ethical dilemma involving medical treatment for a patient with late-stage dementia. You will explore the implications of honoring an advanced directive versus the potential benefits of medical intervention. This exercise aims to deepen your understanding of ethical principles, legal considerations, and the application of theoretical concepts discussed in class.

    Prompt

David has late-stage dementia. He has largely forgotten his previous life and no longer recognizes his family members. Nonetheless, David seems very happy. His family remarks that they never seen him laugh and smile this much before. David has contracted pneumonia which, if untreated, will likely kill him. The pneumonia can be cured with a course of antibiotics. Earlier in life, David signed an advanced directive indicating that were he to end up with dementia, he did not want to receive any medical treatment. Should we treat David? Why or why not?

    Comprehensive Analysis

Remember the following when completing your paper:

    1. Use Class Concepts: Apply the ideas and theories weve discussed in class to address the prompt.
    2. Go Beyond Yes or No: Provide a detailed answer that explores the complexities of the issue, rather than just saying yes or no.
    3. Stay Consistent: Make sure your arguments are consistent and dont contradict yourself within your own paper.
    4. Support with Evidence: Use relevant statistics, laws, rules, and similar cases to back up your analysis. Remember to cite all your sources properly.
    5. Avoid Summaries: Dont just summarize our class discussions or readings. Dive deeper into the analysis. At little more than half of your paper should be devoted to telling me about the reasons you have used, and why your decision is the best way to proceed. This means that you will need to do more than simply summarize the issue.
    6. In-Depth Analysis: Use logic, reason, and perspectives from the humanities to offer a thorough analysis. Clearly explain the implications of your arguments. This includes again using other cases, statistics, and laws not just a feeling.

  • Prep 1 Short Paper

NO PLAGIRISM AND NO AI, the assignment will go through a PRO checker for this!

    Instructions:

The first preparation for the final paper should be around 500 words in length and should address the following:

What culture, nationality, or microculture are you going to focus on?

(DO NOT USE COLOMBIA FROM LATIN AMERICA NOR FRANCE FROM EUROPE SPECIFICALLY, because those are my personal cultures and I need you to choose whichever other one that is different from mines so I can later compare them in a later on assignment, also research on my cultures if you need to Cali, Colombia and Lyon, France, so you can be able to answer which ever other prompts the assingment asks for in all of this instructions. I hope this makes sense.

Briefly describe the culture (language, size, history, ethnicity/race, religion, major customs, and other things that make the culture stand out).

How would you classify the culture in terms of dimensions we have described in class (Collectivism, Communication Context, Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Masculinity, etc.)?

What major value characteristics are prominent in the culture in terms of the value schemes offered in the text and class?

How different/similar is this culture to your own?

(with this one you can research mines to answer it, cali colombia and lyon france) a little context: my father and I are from cali colombia and my sister from bogota colombia and my mother is from lyon france. the family grew up between the two countries, cities and cultures. we also lived because of my farthers job on the move constantly and got to experience living in the following countries: Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Florida USA, Colombia Cali Bogota, France Lyon, and now presently Florida USA again.

Cite 5 sources you could use for this paper. You must have at least one text citation (I have uploaded my class textbook chapters here where you can get whichever text citation you think is best, just one of course) and one scholarly journal citation (which you are free to find that of course has to be relevant and considered a scholarly journal citation). that makes for two sources, the other three you are free to find and choose to complete the full five but of course they have to be relevant to the whole paper.

The rubric for evaluating the preparation will be:

The preparation makes it clear what culture is being analyzed 10 points

The preparation gives some basic information about the culture and people 10 points

The preparation has at least two different dimensions that apply to the culture 10 points

The preparation mentions at least two values from a value scheme in the text that apply to the culture 10 points

The preparation correctly cites 5 different likely sources (includes at least one text source and one scholarly journal source) that could be used to write the final paper 10 points

Thank you and best of luck!

  • Discussion Board Week 6

Read The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. Pay attention to how the happiness of many depends on the suffering of one child, and how the town explains/maintains that arrangement.

    Step 2: Write (600800 words)

    Address all four sections below.

    1) Concepts (Chapter 6)

Choose two concepts from Chapter 6 (examples: ideology, hegemony, resistance, concertive control, standpoint feminism).

Define each in your own words (briefly).

    2) Apply to Omelas

Use specific moments from the story to show how each concept appears in Omelas.

Do not summarize the plotfocus on how communication justifies, normalizes, or challenges the arrangement.

    3) Real-world parallel

Connect Omelas to one real-world case (workplace, school, social movement, media storyline, or current event) where some people benefit while others are marginalized. Be specific.

    4) Critical reflection

    In your real-world case:

    • Who benefits and who is silenced?
    • What communication practices reinforce the system (messages, rules, norms, common sense, etc.)?
    • What would walking away look like in that context (resistance, refusal, reform, exit)?

    Brief:

During this semester you will undertake a number of in-class activities and exercises, aimed at improving your overall writing skills, and your understanding of how to write for different media platforms and/ or media categories.

This portfolio requires you to apply what you have learned with a focus on news writing.

There are three mandatory CHECKPOINTs to complete.

Work through each of the steps on this brief. Doing everything in each step, means youve met the brief (C grade). So, think of ways you can supplement your work by going over and above the brief.

    Steps:

Your portfolio must include the following pieces of writing and its associated elements/ styles (EX: Inverted Pyramid; Champagne Glass), as outlined:

    1. News Article (CHECKPOINT 1 Topic 4)

    • Task: Write a hard news story reporting on a current or recent news event. The focus must be on what happened, who was involved, when, where, and why it matters. The writing must be factual, neutral, and structured using the inverted pyramid style.
    • Word Count: 300 350 words
    • Tone: Neutral and objective
    • Include: Headline, lead/hook, body

    2. News Feed Posts (CHECKPOINT 2 Topic 6)

    • Task: Write a follow-up news update to the hard news story used in your portfolio. This task assesses your ability to report new developments clearly and ethically while maintaining continuity with earlier coverage. • Word Count: 300 350 words
    • Tone: Neutral and objective
    • Include: Headline, lead/hook, body and new information.

Present your portfolio as professionally as you can, so think of how youre displaying your work. All images should be original (identify yours). Any sourced images must be royalty-free (provide the URL).
