Overview

Once a group proposal has been developed, the next step in group development is to create a detailed plan or outline for each of the group sessions. Your level of organization and preparedness as a group facilitator will have a direct impact on the effectiveness of the group. Building upon your Week 6 assignment, you will now go through the process of creating small group sessions to meet the needs of your target population, and to achieve your intended group outcomes.

Instructions

Create six sequential group sessions with the counseling or psychoeducational topic chosen in your Foundations of Effective Group Work: Group Proposal assignment in Week 6. The sessions should reflect your knowledge of group process and stages, format, maintenance, guided practice, and closure.

Complete the following using the . The template contains detailed instructions. Write your assignment content in the template. Retain all the headings from the template, but delete the assignment instructions after you enter your content.

1. Provide a detailed introduction that reviews the group title and description, purpose and rationale, objectives/goals, and theoretical foundation that were detailed in your Week 6 assignment.
2. Next, create an outline or plan for each of your six sequential group sessions. Make sure you follow the instructions provided in the template for each session. Remove all highlighted instructions from the template before you submit your assignment.
3. After creating an outline or plan for each of your sessions, write a 12 page summary, utilizing scholarly sources from the course, that responds to the following:

• Describe how the six sequential group sessions were developed to meet the needs of the target population.
• Identify the theoretical framework selected in your Week 6 assignment. Through this theoretical lens, detail how the group facilitator (that is, counselor) will use various counseling techniques, skills, and approaches to effectively move through the stages of group counseling. Be sure to address all stages of the group process.
• Describe how the group facilitator will monitor progress and evaluate group outcomes.

Module 4 Discussion: Practice Using Open Ended Questions Your task in this module is to practice your skills of attentiveness, reflection of content, reflection of feeling, and asking open-ended questions. Most of us have a tendency to ask close-ended questions (e.g., “Do you feel angry?”) when an open-ended question (e.g., “How are you feeling?”) would elicit greater feedback and deeper exploration by the client. In your regular conversations with friends, family, peers, and co-workers, practice what you are learning by being attentive, using your reflective listening skills, and asking open-ended questions. Try the skills with a variety of individuals in a myriad of settings to observe the different responses. Make a note of the responses you receive. Notice what influence it has on the relationships and the disclosures others make. Pay attention to how similar or different the interaction is from your “normal” interactions with those persons. Boomerang and failure-to-launch are key terms used to describe young adults living at home. Boomerang has been connected to young adults who left home for a period only to return. This return could be for several reasons, including but not limited to continued education, divorce, or loss or lack of employment. Failure-to-launch is connected to young adults who have never left home. Both types of young adults benefit from the comfort of their parents homes, but their return or delay has a negative and some positive outcomes.

reply to this positive I appreciated how gentle and kind Blueys father was throughout the process. I liked that the dad always remained honest, even though telling Bluey that everything will be ok would have been easier. Often, parents and caregivers can try to protect their children at all costs, and this can sometimes lead to children never learning to work through their emotions. Bandits response – I can see how Bandits responses can seem a little matter of fact and less nurturing, but I appreciate the honesty in his approach. I think the child was feeling happy because she was playfully copying her dad. I think Bluey is feeling calmer after she continues to try to make sense of the budgie dying. I think Bluey is figuring out how to process death in her own time and in her own way. Bluey recreating/replaying the day helped her make better sense of what happened. The episode taught me that some children process traumas differently than adults. In order for Bluey to make sense of what happened, she needed to replay the day over. The episode made me think of how hard it is for adults to process loss and death and how difficult it must be for a child to process death. I believe children process things differently and on their own time. This episode taught me how important it is for parents to lead in a kind and mature manner. Bandit was there to support and acknowledged Blueys feelings while remaining in control of his own emotions. He created a safe space for his daughter to open dialogue, which is an important part of a healthy child/parent relationship. If panicked or stressed, Bluey would have emulated her fathers behaviors. Kids are always watching and picking up our cues. I hope to learn techniques that can help children express their feelings and feel supported in a safe and trusted environment. I hope to help adults process their own traumas and fears and help them become adults who can help the younger generations process their emotions in a healthier and more open way.
