  • BCJ599 Criminal Justice Administration: Capstone

    Learning Goal: I’m working on a criminal justice writing question and need a sample draft to help me learn.

    Unit 1 Question 2: Define leadership according to the textbook and explain the various leadership theories.

    Begin each writing assignment by identifying the question number you are answering followed by the actual question itself in bold type

    Use a standard essay format for responses to all questions (i.e., an introduction, middle paragraphs and conclusion

    Do NOT include charts, graphs, or diagrams.

    Responses must be submitted as a MS Word Document only, typed double-spaced, using a standard font (i.e. Times New Roman) and 12 point type size

    Essay should be 750-1000 words

    I need 3-4 citations, and one of them has to be from:

    (S) Justice Administration Police, Courts, & Corrections Management
    Kenneth J. Peak, Andrew L. Giacomazzi, 2018
    Pearson

    ISBN.13: 978-0-134-87140-0

    Citations need to be in APA style. Under this style, you should have a short-form in-text citation at the end of a cited sentence, and a complete reference at the very end of the essay in a Reference section. Footnotes and Endnotes are not used in APA citation format.

    The short-form citation is written inside parentheses and contains the following information: the authors last names, the year of publication, and the specific page number where the information was read. In subsequent (short-form in-text) citations, you do not need to write the year of publication again.

    For example:

    A traditional bureaucracy should utilize a hierarchy or control that is spread throughout an organization. (Thibault, Lynch, & McBride, 2011, p. 85)

    At the very end of the essay, in a Reference section, you must then give a complete reference of each source. For a book, the APA format is:

    Author, A. A. (Year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle. Location: Publisher.

    For this particular course in this example (BCJ 562), the textbook should be cited as:

    Thibault, E. A., Lynch, L. M., & McBride, R. B. (2011). Proactive police management (8th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education/Prentice Hall.

    Imagine you are an expert on critical thinking. You have been asked to give a presentation on the concepts of perception and critical thinking. Create a PowerPoint that contains the following:

    1. Eight slides (one title slide, six content slides, and one reference slide)
    2. How all five senses impact perception
    3. The role of perception in critical thinking
    4. Speaker notes that elaborate on the bulleted content on your slides
    5. Three resources (All credible and at least one is from the GCU library). It is essential that you have a working link (doi, permalink, or weblink) included within each APA-formatted reference in the final slide.

    Refer to the resource, “Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations,” located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style.

    Title slide and reference slide are included in the slide count. Include speaker notes below each content-related slide that represent what would be said if giving the presentation in person. Expand upon the information included in the slide and do not simply restate it. Please ensure the speaker notes include a minimum of 50-100 words per slide.

    While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

  • Professsional Practice Paper: From Self-Determination to Imp…

    Your Professional Practice Paper is an opportunity for you to synthesize and critically evaluate the literature on your selected practice problem in context of your learning over your program of studies.

    n your paper, you are expected to:

    • analyze a professional practice problem;
    • review the literature to expand your own and others’ understanding of the problem;
    • critique the literature on your selected problem;
    • use relevant research findings to inform recommendations for professional practice;
    • meet academic research and writing standards; and
    • write to be understood.

    Your paper should be 4000-5000 words (16-20 pages) in length and use the following structure:

    • Title page
    • Abstract max 250 words or 1 page
    • Introduction about 300 words or 1.5 pages
    • Problem Description and Analysis about 750-1000 words or 3-4 pages
    • Literature Review (argument of discovery) about 1500-2000 words or 6-9 pages
    • Discussion and Recommendations (argument of advocacy) – about 1000-1250 or about 4-5 pages
    • Conclusion about 250 words or 1 page
    • References

    Please note: the problem description should be a condensed version of assignment 1. The literature review is a condensed version of assignment 2. There is no need to duplicate. However, do edit assignments 1 and 2 so that they contribute to the argument in your paper. In this regard, pay attention to emphasising why you approached the problem in the way you did and how it frames and leads to validating your conclusions. In the literature section, first the aim is to convince the reader you have surveyed the literature – but this should be short and concise. The remainder ot the literature section is either to explain why your research is important to the literature (i.e. you are adding to the literature) or that the literature validates your findings and thus reinforces the importance of your resarch. Lastly, think about the literature as part of an influence process – most of you are doing research that is action oriented so you are referring to the literature also to get the attention of people you want to influence. Ideally this means paying attention to the sort of policy or literature sources that decision makers in your respective field tend to refer to in justifying their decision making and resource allocations.

    Some Notable examples:

    Example 1:

    Example 2:

    Example 3:

    Keep the main argument focused in Alberta & Canada, you are able to explore other tribal police forces around the world to support & critique the work. AS well as looking at other frameworks.

    Answer two questions:

    1. Discuss Merton’s concept of anomie (the disjunction of cultural goals, institutionalized means, and the actual distribution of opportunities (e.g., educational, economic) to achieve the cultural goals. What is the most important cultural goal according to Merton? Define and discuss the five individual adaptations to anomie Merton identifies.

    1. Define and discuss Hagedorn’s ideal types of “homeboys, dope fiends, legits, and new jacks” (p. 57). Pay particular attention to how each of these types represents Merton’s five adaptations to anomie. How does Hagedorn update Merton’s theory with the addition of racial discrimination as obstacle to goal achievement?

    1. In his general strain theory, Agnew extends Merton’s anomie to factors influencing community deviance. Identify and discuss any five of the factors increasing the likelihood of a criminal response (pp. 81-84).

    Points Possible: 20

    Due: Sunday, January 26, 11:55 pm

    Answer two questions:

    1. Durkheim treats deviance and crime as objective, measurable social facts. Deviance is both normal (ALL societies have patterns of deviance/crime) and pathological (patterns of deviance/crime are statistically infrequent compared to conforming behavior patterns). Explain how recreational marijuana use may be both normal and pathological social behavior. If most people have used marijuana (“normal”), how can it be defined as deviant (“pathological”)?

    2. Erikson argues that deviance is NOT an objective quality of behavior; rather, social audiences label deviance based on directly or indirectly witnessing such behavior. In short, deviance is less about statistical evidence and more a quality of social reaction. Using drunk driving as an example, how does audience reaction establish boundaries between recreational drinking and drunk driving, especially the legal response to the latter? In your answer pay particular attention to age of offenders as an important boundary.

    3. Emile Durkheim has written that crime is normal. Similarly, Kai T. Erikson maintains that deviant behavior functions to uphold community standards by punishing the deviant. Explain how deviance and crime can be normal and/or functional. Pay particular attention to the sociological context of crime/deviance in your answer. How does boundary maintenance relate to the sociological idea that crime/deviance is normal?

    4. Summarize Becker’s four different viewpoints on deviance: statistical; medical/disease; failure to obey group rules; and labels defined through social interaction. Which of the four do you think is the most important in understanding the persistence of deviance in society?

    5. Moynihan contends that society is in a constant state of defining and redefining what is considered deviant, “so as to exempt much conduct previously stigmatized and also quietly raising the “normal” level in categories where behavior is now abnormal by any earlier standard.” Discuss the three specific types of redefinition he covers: the altruistic, the opportunistic, and the normalizing.

    MY BIO/REASONING: I chose to pursue a career in the criminal justice field because service has been a guiding principle in my life since childhood. It was one of my greatest honors to serve my country in the United States Army from 2003 to 2017 as a Combat Infantryman, completing six combat deploymentsthree to Iraq and three to Afghanistan.

    After transitioning from active duty, I continued my commitment to service by working with the Department of Veterans Affairs, where I assisted fellow veterans in filing disability claims and navigating the VA benefits process. Supporting those who had also served our nation was deeply meaningful to me. During that time, a fellow veteran encouraged me to pursue a career in law enforcement, recognizing that my experience, discipline, and dedication to service would translate well into the profession.

    I subsequently entered law enforcement and have now served for six years. I hold a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice and remain committed to continued professional and academic growth.

    Having had the privilege to serve my country, support my fellow veterans, and now protect and serve my community as a police officer, I view this profession as more than a careerit is a continuation of my lifelong dedication to serving others. My aspirations within the criminal justice field include advancing into leadership roles where I can mentor fellow officers, promote accountability and professionalism, and strengthen trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve. Ultimately, I seek to lead with integrity, uphold the highest ethical standards, and make a lasting, positive impact on the profession and those it serves.
