Our discussions this week will look to explain and control misconduct in the court system.

    1. Explain how “the desire to win” can lead a prosecutor to pursue a case that should be dropped or choose to not disclose evidence that would exonerate a defendant. How does the organizational/occupational culture affect their motivations? Give a real life example of prosecutor misconduct and indicate briefly how/if that prosecutor was punished?

    2. What can be done to reduce prosecutorial misconduct?

    3. If you were to outline an ethics policy for a district attorney’s office, what would be three important points you would want included in that policy?

Assignrent Information (from Course Outline -emphasis for key Essay Outline considerations): For this 1,500-word paper project, choose and delve into three key communication considerations or elements relevant to justice studies theory and / or practice. These can be applicable either to the academic field as a whole or to a specific relevant area that interests you. Choose subject matter ideas sparked through references in the texts or through your own research. Ideas could include key concepts, specific communication strategies or notable challenges faced in the field. With that freedom for creativity, define your choices clearly and distinctly. Develop a thesis that explores not just these individual elements, but also considers how they may interconnect or influence each other in the broader context of justice studies and/or related professions. In your analysis, use and reference a combination of textbook references, academic journals, case studies and other scholarly resources. Include, in balance, personal reflections or experiences relevant to the chosen considerations. Engage critically with the material, questioning assumptions and forming original viewpoints, and demonstrate this. Structure your essay appropriately based on guidance in the relevant text, including formatting and referencing consistently. The text offers a thorough roadmap to correct style and will be reinforced in class. Consider structuring your essay sections around each consideration: explain it and its significance in justice studies, offer detailed analysis and share your reflective insights based on your understandings from the course. Be sure to highlight the interrelations, combined impacts and/or cumulative significance core to your thesis. Essay Outlines should include your working thesis, show your efforts toward planning your argument and follow the style included in the text, along with including a list of resources researched. Final Essays will be evaluated based on: comprehension of the subject matter; critical analysis of the material given; creativity, logical thinking, problem-solving; organization and presentation of ideas; and, competence expressing thoughts in writing.
