  • Week 5 – Written Assignments

You are a police investigator. A distraught wife appears at the local police station and states that her husband has just informed her that he has been putting poison in her coffee for over a week. She also states that she was not feeling well and went to the doctor, who advised her that she had indigestion. Her husband confesses to you that he hates her, wants her dead, and has been putting a poisonous substance in her coffee for the past week. Upon investigation, you obtain the substance from the husband. The lab analyzes the substance and advises you that it is harmless.

    1. Do you trust that this is the substance that was used? What else will you do to determine this?

    2. If the substance was harmless and could not possibly poison the wife, with what crime(s), if any, will the husband be charged?

  • Risk Management in Criminal Justice Outline and Video

A criminal justice professional working within the court system may need to understand how problem-solving methodologies are relevant to the court process, and how the methodologies may affect court processes and legal outcomes.

Having explored various approaches to problem-solving and analyzed how they can be used to reduce or manage risk in Weeks 1 and 2, you will act as a criminal justice professional in this assessment to evaluate the use of the scientific method in criminal justice endeavors. You will explain how deductive and inductive reasoning are used to analyze and interpret solutions to issues.

You have been asked to testify in a court trial, and the prosecutor has asked you to explain the steps you might take to analyze the following crime scene to establish your credibility and experience in criminal investigations to the jury: Police were called to the 500 block of Main Street for an attempted assault. The suspect entered the home through an unlocked window in the rear of the home. The forensic team has collected a shoe print from the flower bed for evidence. Similar shoe prints were found at 8 other locations within the city where assaults have occurred.

    Preparation

Review the feedback you received from your faculty member on your Weeks 1 and 2 assignments and apply it to this assessment.

    Assessment Deliverables

This summative assessment has 2 deliverables:

    • Part 1: 1 page risk management video outline
    • Part 2: 4 -minute risk management video

Follow the prompts in Parts 1 and 2 to complete the outline and video. In them, youll explain to the jury the differences between various problem-solving approaches and their relevance in risk management for the Main Street crime scene investigation.

Part 1: Risk Management Video Outline

    • Summarize the 5 steps of the scientific method.
    • Explain how at least 2 steps of the scientific method can be applied in the crime scene investigation.
    • Explain how deductive and inductive approaches differ and how each can be used in the crime scene investigation.
    • Provide 2 examples to illustrate and explain how the scientific method and deductive and inductive reasoning can help you manage risks during the crime scene investigation.

Provide reference entries for at least 3 academic sources, in addition to the textbook, to support your thinking.

Format citations and references according to APA guidelines.

    Part 2: Risk Management Video

Using your Part 1: Risk Management Video Outline, record a 4 minute video addressing your outlined points. To maintain audience engagement, avoid reading your notes word for word while recording your video.

Choose 1 of the following options to submit your video for this summative assessment:

    • Option 1: Upload the video file to this summative assessment.
    • Option 2: Provide a link to the video that is accessible to your faculty member.

Submit your video outline and video recording.

  • Deductive Reasoning and Risk Management

This week you learned about deductive thinking and how it is relevant to critical thinking. In this assignment, you will examine the relevance of deductive reasoning in a criminal justice context and how it can be used to manage risk(s). You will use this assignment to develop ideas for your Week 3 summative assessment.

    Preparation

Review faculty feedback from the Wk 1 Topic Approval: Deductive Reasoning and Risk Management assignment and incorporate that feedback in this summary, as needed.

Review the Wk 3 Summative Assessment: Problem-Solving Methodologies to understand the assessment format and requirements.

    Assignment Deliverable

Include the following headings and information in your summary:

    Introduction

    • Explain the concept of deductive thinking.
    • Explain the skills and mindset required to apply deductive reasoning.
    • Explain the relevance of truth, validity, and soundness when applying deductive reasoning.

    Deductive Reasoning Analysis

Create a scenario illustrating how deductive reasoning can be used to solve a problem/scenario related to crime in 1 of the following criminal justice subdomains that you selected in Week 1: law enforcement, courts, or corrections.

    • Identify the problem and relevant criminal elements.
    • Explain how deductive reasoning can be used to address the problem.

Note: You may use the problem/scenario you created in your Wk 1 Topic Approval: Deductive Reasoning and Risk Management assignment or select a different problem/scenario of your choice.

    Risk Management Analysis

Identify 1 or 2 potential risks in the scenario or crime/problem and explain how applying deductive reasoning can help reduce or manage these risk(s). Consider the following examples:

    • Operational risks (e.g., personnel/property/assets/resources)
    • Compliance and/or liability risks (e.g., legal/financial)
    • Risks to public safety or public reputation
    • Ethical risks
    • Technology risks

Cite at least 2 scholarly sources, in addition to the textbook 12th edition thinking critically .

Format your assignment according to APA guidelines.

  • Estimation Assignment

MODULE 5: ESTIMATION ASSIGNMENT Questions are taken directly from Brase, Brase, Dolor, and Seibert Chapter 7, page 377. In case an eBook page number differs, the questions are listed below: Discuss each of the following topics in class or review the topics on your own. Then, write a brief but complete essay in which you summarize the main points. Please include formulas and graphs as appropriate. 1. In this chapter, we have studied confidence intervals. Carefully read the following statements about confidence intervals: a. Once the endpoints of the confidence interval are numerically fixed, the parameter in question (either or pp) does or does not fall inside the fixed interval. b. A given fixed interval either does or does not contain the parameter or pp; therefore, the probability is 1 or 0 that the parameter is in the interval. Next, read the following statements. Then, discuss all four statements in the context of what we actually mean by a confidence interval. c. Nontrivial probability statements can be made only about variables, not constants. d. The confidence level c represents the proportion of all (fixed) intervals that would contain the parameter if we repeated the process many, many times. 2. Throughout Chapter 7, we have used the normal distribution, the central limit theorem, and the Students t distribution. a. Give a brief outline describing how confidence intervals for means use the normal distribution or Students t distribution in their basic construction. b. Give a brief outline describing how the normal approximation to the binomial distribution is used in the construction of confidence intervals for a proportion p. c. Give a brief outline describing how the sample size for a predetermined error tolerance and level of confidence is determined from the normal distribution. 3. When the results of a survey or a poll are published, the sample size is usually given, as well as the margin of error. For example, suppose the Honolulu Star Bulletin reported that it surveyed 385 Honolulu residents, and 78% said they favor mandatory jail sentences for people convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (with margin of error of 3 percentage points in either direction). Usually, the confidence level of the interval is not given, but it is standard practice to use the margin of error for a 95% confidence interval when no other confidence level is given. a. The paper reported a point estimate of 78%, with margin of error of 3%. Write this information in the form of a confidence interval for p, the population proportion of residents favoring mandatory jail sentences for people convicted of driving under the influence. What is the assumed confidence level? b. The margin of error is simply the error due to using a sample instead of the entire population. It does not take into account the bias that might be introduced by the wording of the question, by the truthfulness of the respondents, or by other factors. Suppose the question was asked in this fashion: Considering the devastating injuries suffered by innocent victims in auto accidents caused by drunken or drugged drivers, do you favor a mandatory jail sentence for those convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Do you think the wording of the question would influence the respondents? Do you think the population proportion of those favoring mandatory jail sentences would be accurately represented by a confidence interval based on responses to such a question? Explain your answer. If the question had been Considering existing overcrowding of our prisons, do you favor a mandatory jail sentence for people convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol? do you think the population proportion of those favoring mandatory sentences would be accurately represented by a confidence interval based on responses to such a question? Explain. General Instructions As doctoral students, your assignments are expected to follow the principles of high-quality scientific standards and promote knowledge and understanding in the field of criminal justice. You should apply a rigorous and critical assessment of a body of theory and empirical research, articulating what is known about the phenomenon and ways to advance research about the topic under review. Research syntheses should identify significant variables, a systematic and reproducible search strategy, and a clear framework for studies included in the larger analysis. Assignments may be written in first person (I). All assignments should be clearly and concisely written, with technical material set off. Please do not use jargon, slang, idioms, colloquialisms, or bureaucratese. Use acronyms sparingly and spell them out the first time you use them. Please do not construct acronyms from phrases you repeat frequently in the text. Structure of Assignment Paper For purposes of this assignment, there is no layout structure required as far as the setup of this paper, with one exception. I would appreciate it if you used separate headers for question 1 and question 2. Sub-headers are also allowed but not required. Questions should strive to be no less than 500 words each with no maximum limit. I expect all papers to be in the latest APA edition, properly cited, and appropriate tables attached. Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.
