    Disc. #2

    Greetings Class,

For this discussion post, you will need to have read and reviewed chapter 4 of the textbook and then respond to the prompt. Remember, the learning objectives for the current chapter are as follows:

    Learning Objectives

    1. Define and distinguish conceptualization, operationalization, and an indicator.
    2. Identify the different forms of single questions and response choices.
    3. Explain the rationale for creating multi-item indexes, and discuss the issues that should always be explored about indexes.
    4. Give examples of the four levels of measurement.
    5. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the four approaches to testing the validity of measures.
    6. Define four basic methods of evaluating reliability.
    7. Understand the difference between measurement validity and reliability.

The current discussion will help to work on objectives 1-4.

    PROMPT:

I want you to think about how would you define “alcoholism?” First, write a brief definition based on your own beliefs. Second, based on this conceptualization, describe a method of measurement that would be valid for a study of alcoholism (as you define it). If you are not certain about how you would measure it or what the term conceptualization means, revisit the chapter and lecture. Now go to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism website at and read its description of alcohol use disorder. What is the definition used? Write that definition in your response and then describe how alcohol use disorder is actually conceptualized? Describe How this compares to your definition?

For the response to another student, compare your definitions to those of another student. Be specific and provide details and examples of what is similar and what is not. Discuss what you learned from this effort.

  • Article Variable Measurement

    Criminal Justice Research II-

    Greetings,

For this assignment, you will need to have read and reviewed the material for chapter 4 on levels of measurement. Open the article in the module on Identity Theft by Golladay and respond to the questions below.

    1. What is the title of the journal the article was published in, and what year was it published?

    2. What is the main research question/hypothesis offered by the authors?

    3. How are each of the main dependent, independent, and control variables measured (which of the four levels) for the current study? How do you know?

    4. Select any three of the given variables described in question #3 and assign a different level of measurement for each of the variables. What this means is, if you select the variable AGE, for example, and you noted in question #3 that age was measured as an ordinal level variable, I want you to show how it would me measured at the nominal or interval level. Explain for each of the three variables.

  • The Great paper chase

Understanding social organization requires surveying members of a neighborhood about their relationships and interactions–in fact, Sampson and colleagues developed a whole new set of surveys to conduct their study of Chicago! We are going to collectively learn more about the range of things that one can ask in a neighborhood survey. To get there, we are going to do a special assignment called “The Great Paper Chase.”

Using your preferred database or search engine for finding scholarly papers, find one academic paper of your choosing and that are centered on neighborhood surveys.

Identify and describe 3 different survey scales (also known as instruments) from these papers, not including collective efficacy or its components (social cohesion and social control). Note: A survey scale is one or more questions intended to measure a specific concept, like collective efficacy, fear of crime, or perceived disorder. For our purposes here, it is not the measurement strategy itself (e.g., Likert scale), which some of you may have seen in methods courses.

Construct 1 PPT slides, one corresponding to one of the papers and scale you identified. On each PPT slide, provide:

    • The reference for the paper
    • The concept being measured
    • The scale intended to measure the concept
    • The items used to measure the concept
    • Provide a discussion of reliability related to the measure of the concept.

In constructing your paper, please recall the following definitions:

Survey A data collection tool used to collect responses from participants on multiple, often related subjects, typically broken up into scales.

Scale (aka Instrument) A set of one or more items intended to measure a specific topic or concept.

Item A single statement or question to which a survey participant responds.

Your Assignment will be graded according to the Activity Rubric below.

Next, I believe that any good officer should be brave. I exhibited bravery when I…….. The fourth trait that all good officers should possess is transparency. One way I demonstrate transparency is when I …….. The final trait that all officers should possess is physical fitness. I demonstrate my physical fitness by……… The criminal justice system is a new component of modern society. For thousands of years, communities had no police to protect them against criminals It was up to the citizens to protect their property, family, and livelihood. The concept of paying individuals to protect the community originated in England around the mid-1800s. Officers traveled primarily on foot and made an effort to foster relationships with communities. The police are the first component of the criminal justice system. The polices primary roles within the criminal justice system are to prevent crime and disorder, and to make arrests. The second component of the criminal justice system are the courts. The key responsibilities of the courts are to interpret the law and provide due process for those involved in cases. They also have the authority to dismiss, downgrade, or upgrade charges. Prosecutors also depend on clear and accurate police reporting to help build their case. The final component of the criminal justice system is corrections. The roles of corrections involve rehabilitation of criminals, providing justice and restitution to victims, and ensuring safe and humane conditions for those sentenced to serve time in correctional facilities I hope this message has conveyed my interest in becoming an officer within your department. I have introduced five of my best traits, a brief history of policing, and the different roles among the three components of the criminal justice system. • Investigating a Homicide

Continued from Week 3) . . . You just received confirmation from the coroner of your belief that the death of Mathew R. Brewster is indeed a homicide – it is no big revelation as there was no weapon found at the crime scene. During the initial investigation, you were only able to interview tenants of the building who mentioned seeing the victim and some unknown visitors, but none of them were home during the suspected time of the murder as determined by the coroner.

Fortunately, persons of interest have been identified. How do you uncover more information inclusive of interviewing these persons of interest?

    Gathering Information

You continue gathering information by revisiting the crime scene and utilizing available resources commonly used by the police.

    Interview

A potential suspect,19-year-old Vanessa Montros, has been identified and agreed to be interviewed at the station… which interview model will you employ? What questions will you ask?

    Interrogation

Based on the answers gained from your initial interview and other information, you feel that Ms. Montros should now be interrogated. She has become defensive and wary of the process – at times belligerent, but she has not asked for a lawyer and continues to cooperate. You need to decide how you are going to legally conduct the interrogation. What approach is likely to be the most effective in garnering further information? Does the suspect need to be Mirandized? Why or why not?

    Arrest

Imagine, that days later you go to Ms. Montros’ home to ask her some additional questions. She answers the door and steps outside to talk – leaving the door open behind her. The discussion escalates and soon she is fed up with talking to you. In a fit, she pushes one of your fellow officers. You respond by arresting her. Your gut tells you that she is the killer and there is damning evidence of it to be found in her house. Can you legally enter and search the house?

    Instructions

Consider the developing scenario and do the following in 3-4 pages:

    Gathering Information

    • Describe the next steps that you would take on a scene that would be effective in identifying additional witnesses and evidence. Include police resources that should be consulted or utilized to further the investigation at this point.

    Interview

    • Choose and justify an appropriate interview model (from the course text) and pose 5 revealing questions that you would ask the suspect that directly reflect it.

    Interrogation

    • Explain 2 circumstances under which this suspect will need to be Mirandized.

    Arrest

    • Describe the details of a specific circumstance under which a legal search of the premises may be conducted.
  • The state of Georgia v.Troy Davis

Your written assignments for the first-half of this course will follow a criminal case through the pretrial, trial, and sentencing processes.
