  • Midterm

For your mid-term examination, you will be assigned four (4) essay questions, each covering different topics we have reviewed thus far throughout the semester. Please consult the ‘Rubric for Essay Examination Questions’ for the criteria used to grade responses. Each question will require that you thoughtfully consider the issue presented to you, and articulate a cogent answer using appropriate grammar. Though there will be no requirement to gather empirical sources to justify your replies, you are being graded on your ability to analyze carefully the question, and succinctly summarize your answer to it. As such, information used to draft your responses can be culled exclusively from the assigned reading material. On this point, you will need to cite a direct sentence from the required CRJ-5150 textbook in each of your responses to all four questions. After citing that sentence within each essay response, in parentheses immediately next to it, provide the precise page number, line number, and paragraph number, along with the location of this sentence on the page in the book. Use this direct quotation from the book to supplement your essay responses. Individual essay questions are valued at 25 points, to comprise 100 total for the entire examination. Every essay response should range between 300 and 350 words in length. This is a strictly enforced maximum word count. Every word over will result in a point deduction.

  • Research Paper

    OVERVIEW

The purpose of this assignment is to help you begin to think critically about real-world problems.

Being able to dissect the motives of criminals and the policies that we rely on in society is

important for the doctoral candidate. This assignment will help you think through all the theories

we have discussed in this course in order to select the most valuable and explanatory theories for

    the selected criminal or policy.

    INSTRUCTIONS

In this assignment, you will select only one (1) topic: a serial murderer or a policy.

If you select a serial murderer, you will write a 34-page biography of the individual

followed by an 11-14 page analysis of at least 3 theories that might be used to explain

why the individual committed the crimes they committed. Each theory must be explained

in reference to the individuals biography and must be greatly detailed.

If you select a current criminal justice policy (i.e., three-strikes laws), you will write a 3

4-page description of the policy followed by an 11-14 page analysis of at least 3 theories

that might have been used as a foundation for that policy. Each theory must be explained

in reference to the individuals biography and must be greatly detailed

In other words, as noted in the constraints above, you will have some limited flexibility in

choosing your topic. The research paper should be between 16 and 18 pages, making sure that

your content fits in that range.

The project must use current APA style and appropriate headings are expected.

The page count does not include the title page, abstract, reference section, or any extra

    material.

You must incorporate a Christian Worldview throughout your paper or have a specific

section of your paper dedicated to Christian Worldview.

You must use a minimum of 15-20 recent, relevant, and academic (peer-reviewed

journals preferred and professional journal allowed if used judiciously) sources with at

least 1 source being the Bible and no more than 2 books.

This paper must reflect doctoral-level research and writing style. Please reference the Research

Paper Grading Rubric when creating your research paper.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

  • CHAPTER APPLICATION PAPER

    OVERVIEW

The purpose of this paper is to present your well-articulated perspective and thoughts from the

chapters assigned from the reading. The integration of textbook and article sources is important

in developing critical thinking skills in the abstract content that is in this course and in courses to

come. This assignment should not be taken lightly nor should it be rushed. Articulating and

developing critical thinking requires time thinking about the material.

    INSTRUCTIONS

Select one chapter from chapters 11-13 in Snipes: Volds Theoretical Criminology and write

an 8-10 page paper that summarizes, synthesizes, and then applies the information from the

Chapter to issues/policies relevant to the topic. Your paper must be well-organized and be

reflective of your thinking and struggles in these very complex areas of dealing with criminal

offending. This paper must use 4-5 citations in proper APA format.

Each paper must identify the premise and supporting points of the chapter, a synthesis of the

information from the chapter, and a critical application of the premise(s) and supporting points

from the chapter to an issue of criminal offending. The paper should address:

Key points, patterns, and trends from the information in the chapter with citations for the

    textbook

How the chapter information applies to issues of criminal offending supported by sources

    outside the textbook

Analysis of the chapter information from a Christ-centered perspective with citations

    from Scripture

The organization of your paper is very important. Please follow APA and make sure to use

section headings in your paper. Make sure to include a cover page, a references page, and

develop a well-formatted, grammatically correct paper. The cover page and reference page do

not count toward the minimum number of pages for the assignment.
