  • Supreme Court justice exercise

During his first term, President Donald Trump had the opportunity to nominate three justices to the United States Supreme Court. Each nomination followed the constitutional process, but the tenor of each was distinctly different.

Using resources readily available on the internet, research the confirmation process for U.S. Supreme Court justices, in general, and Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett confirmations specifically. After conducting your research, develop and fully discuss your personal position on whether or not the appointment/confirmation process as currently conducted is what the framers of our Constitution envisioned.

Your response must be a minimum of 750 words and must reference a minimum of three resources outside of the textbook. Upload your response in a MS Word document.

  • Courts and community justice

Discuss Chapter 3 and associated materials with your classmates here. First, find and share an example of one of the approaches of the courts and community justice in Chapter 3. Briefly describe and evaluate your example and identify the type of community court that it involves. How does this example relate to your textbook’s treatment of courts and community justice? With those offered in the additional materials from this week–for example, how does it relate to the main concepts and ideas from the two TED Talks? The short film on Teen Court? Red Hook Community Center? Taken together, how do all of these sources inform your understanding of courts and community justice?
  • American criminal justice system

The literature review assignment serves as the major scholarly project in this course, allowing students to demonstrate their ability to locate, analyze, and synthesize peer-reviewed research on a criminal justice topic of their choosing. This assignment progresses through three developmental stages designed to scaffold the research and writing process: (1) Topic and Reference List, in which students identify a research topic and compile a list of at least ten scholarly, peer-reviewed sources formatted in proper APA 7th edition style; (2) Annotated Bibliography, in which students summarize and evaluate each source, articulating how it contributes to their understanding of the topic; and (3) Draft Literature Review, in which students submit a preliminary version of their literature review for feedback prior to making revisions and completing the final submission. The final literature review will be a five-page synthesis of the scholarly literature that demonstrates students’ advanced knowledge of a component of the American criminal justice system, their ability to read and critically evaluate peer-reviewed journal articles, and their competence in producing graduate-level writing using APA formatting. Through this staged approach, students will develop skills essential to master’s level study in criminal justice connecting academic scholarship to real-world issues in the field while building the foundational research and writing abilities necessary for continued professional and academic success. The project will progress in multiple stages throughout the semester (see below and Course Calendar in Syllabus for specific due dates), with your final draft of the literature review due Friday, May 1st by 11:59PM.
