  • Law enforcement reporting

Please rewrite this I think law enforcement agencies should be required to report crime statistics to the FBI. Having consistent and accurate data is important because it helps the government and the public understand crime trends and make informed decisions about policy and funding. If reporting is optional, the data can become incomplete or misleading, which makes it harder to address real problems in society. Requiring all agencies to report would also create more transparency and accountability within the criminal justice system. It would ensure that crime is being measured fairly across different regions instead of depending on which departments choose to participate. While some agencies may argue that reporting takes time and resources, having reliable national crime data is essential for improving public safety and trust in law enforcement.

    • The Scene: Imagine you are a legal consultant reviewing Officer Millers bodycam footage and arrest report. We are at the very beginning of the State v. Thorne case. Everything that follows in this investigation depends on whether these first sixty seconds were legal. If the stop is bad, the whole case might crumble.
    • Keep Chapter 4 of your textbook in mind and use it to justify any answers you provide.

    Step 2: Submit

    • In your initial post, analyze the “Critical Moment” of the initial encounter between Officer Miller and Thorne by addressing the following:
    • The Stop: Does the “Triple Threat” of evidencean anonymous tip, a high-crime area, and Thornes “headlong flight”add up to Reasonable Suspicion? Cite Terry v. Ohio to justify your position.
    • The “Plain Feel” Conflict: Officer Miller pat-down Thorne and felt a “hard, rectangular object.” Based on the Plain Feel Doctrine (Minnesota v. Dickerson), did Miller have the right to reach into that pocket? Was that object “immediately apparent” as a weapon or contraband, or did Miller go on a “fishing expedition”?
    • The Legal Verdict: At this specific moment, were Thorne’s Fourth Amendment rights violated?

  • Chapter 2 Assignment: Concept Mapping

For this assignment you will be connecting “landmark” Supreme Court cases with the corresponding Constitutional Amendment, using a concept mapping freeware from

    .

First, go to the website and create a free account using your Quincy college email address. Do not spend any money on this, use the free account only. Spend some time learning how to use it and how to save/share a link to your map. Once you feel confident with the software it’s time to do your homework. I HAVE ALREADY CREATED AN ACCOUNT ON THE WEBSITE AND WILL ATTACH LOGIN INFO

    ANNA.SWEENEY14 @ GMAIL . COM

    As496123*

For this assignment you will refer to page 20 in chapter 2, table 2.1, and there you will see the constitutional amendments that relate to police procedure, with exception of the 14th amendment which you will add to your map. Your job in this assignment is to do independent research and find the landmark court cases that help to create these rights and map them against each of the amendments. Your map should flow something like the following:

In the middle of the map, your first “bubble” or node will be labeled “due process amendments”. From there you will extend to a new node which will be labeled “fourth amendment” and contain a very short summary about the fourth amendment which you can harvest from the book. From there you will create no less than three additional nodes showing the landmark Supreme Court cases that relate to that amendment. For example, after you make the fifth amendment node you will link to a case called Miranda v. Arizona. Miranda is one of the foundational cases that the fifth amendment is built upon. In the Miranda note you will provide a very short statement about the case or link an outside document that explains the case to the node.

Using this software you will map the amendments found in table 2.1 but you will also add the 14th amendment to your map. also please note that many of the cases you will be looking for are already mapped out for you in proceeding chapters of this textbook and certainly you can use the book as a resource along with anything else you find on the web.

To help get you started you can use this

to help speed up your search for the landmark court cases.

Once you finish your map get a shareable link and submit the shareable link to Canvas.

Your research paper will automatically go through Turnitin shortly after you submit it — each time. I strongly recommend that you submit your near-final draft before the due date. Doing so will allow you time to review your report, and if necessary, make corrections before your final version is due. If the Turnitin Originality Report is yellow, orange or red, you should review it close to see if you may need to insert some additional citations or paraphrase some material. If you do have a red or orange report, you should include a note to your instructor explaining why and how you mitigated it with citations, etc.

    • use effective, well-designed search strategies and tools to efficiently and creatively refine searches; utilize academic resources and ensure that your sources are appropriate.
    • apply multiple criteria to assess relevance, currency, authority, accuracy, purpose, audience and ideological perspectives related to your topic.
    • look for statistical evidence that either supports or detracts from the criminal law-related challenges that you address, and explain its relevance and value to your selected topic.
    • clearly and effectively communicate, organize, and synthesize complex and often contradictory information to advance graduate level scholarly knowledge about your selected topic.
    • Quote, paraphrase, and cite information correctly and consistently, always using information in ways that are true to the original context. Use citations as noted below.

Your paper should be 8-10 pages. Here are some general guidelines. Please use a clear (e.g., Times New Roman, Arial, Courier) 12 point font and include page numbers. Please double space. I recommend using topic and sub topic headings to organize your paper.

Please apply Bluebook citation style (which uses footnotes) if you are a Legal Studies student. If you are not a Legal Studies student, you may use APA style.

What I’m really looking for in the paper is graduate level cohesive writing in which you research and analyze primary legal sources, such as case law, statutes and the US Constitution.

    1. Write an introduction, which clearly identifies the topic of your report and the issues which you seek to illuminate. The introduction should include the thesis statement (or basis of your report), and a very preliminary overview of the evidence you will use to support it. Finally, the introduction should include a statement that identifies why is the topic of your report important.
    2. The body of your report should be dedicated to supporting your thesis statement with claims gleaned from your research (into what others have written on the topic; data that you have gathered), readings from the course text, discussions, and/or case law, law review articles, etc.
    3. Conclude your report by recapitulating your thesis statement and explaining in greater detail the significance of your findings. Include in your conclusion some questions or claims about the topic and/or specific which you’ve written. If you believe more research needs to be done on your topic, be specific about what kind of research and how you think it ought to be done.

  • Assignment

Module 1, Section 1 Review Assignment

Note: Any quotes are from the book of readings.

You need to read and review two articles from the book of readings, Critical Issues in Policing.

    • The Foundation of the Police Role in Society: Important Information to Know during a Police Legitimacy Crisis, Dunham & Alpert, pages 3 – 11
    • The Development of the American Police: An Historical Overview, Craig Uchida, pages 11 – 30

Dunham and Alpert set “the social context of policing by discussing how the institution of policing fits into a very complex U.S. society.” They move to a discussion of the use of force. The use of force makes police unique. It allows police to “function effectively.”

The social contract of American society provides for the people to allow police to possess and exert force. The parameters of the use of force remain ultimately with the people. According to Alpert and Dunham, police, despite continuing controversies, generally rate high among the people. However, this is difficult in an ever-increasing and complex role of the police function.

The United States system of policing and law enforcement is complex and extensive. It appears to be a fragmented system. The federal government alone has many overlapping law enforcement agencies. They note a difference between policing and law enforcement. The authors try to provide an understanding of the place and role of the police in society. Their article provides a good introduction.

The second article provides a somewhat comprehensive historical overview of policing since 900 AD. I found this reading fascinating. The article, while providing a foundation in the historical development of policing give the reader a good understanding of the evolution of policing.

Uchida starts by telling the reader how policing developed as a community activity from 900 AD. Citizens had direct responsibility for policing and other activities in their British communities. With the rise of larger population centers, a need for an established police force developed. A preventive approach to crime developed. In America, policing became more of a political exercise than it was in Britain.

The reading discusses three of the major reform eras, including the major upheaval in society and policing during the 1960s and 70s. Police and citizen conflicts occurred frequently. Most major cities had riots.

You should find the historical development of policing fascinating. You might be surprise many of the arguments occurring today are repeats of the past.

George Kelling, in his 2003 article, starts from the perspective that the “United States is in a period of dramatic change. This assertion appears as true today as it was in 2003. The questions he asks about factors responsible for drops in certain crime rates are still relevant.

Much of Kelling’s article reflects on the history and development of policing in the United States. Consider carefully what came before to better understand the present and possible future. You should find this article interesting and informative.

The authors discuss the development of community policing, which occurred after the 60s and 70s. However, community policing means different things to different people. The author points out that the federal government often throws cash at the problem.

You should find both articles interesting and informative.

For this assignment, you must reflect on both articles and tell me what you learned, what you found interesting, and what, if anything, you take away from the articles that you can use or think about using in the future. You have a lot of latitude in completing this assignment. However, I want to read a serious reflection.

Submit the assignment as a Word/Office document that is equivalent to two to three pages. However, there is no page limit. Outside sources may help to enhance your grade.

Double-space between paragraphs. Single-space between lines within paragraphs. A good assignment starts with an introduction and ends with a summary or conclusion.

Grading will consider content along with grammar, essay format, spelling, use of terminology, paragraph structure, and sentence structure. Submit the Review as a Word/Office document.
