Do not use first person (I, me, we, us, etc.) or subjective/opinion statements in academic or professional writing, including these writing assignments. This is not an opinion paper. If the information you are discussing in a paragraph is all from one source (such as your textbook), cite that source with in-text citations at the beginning and the end of the paragraph. Also cite the source following any direct quotes. Helpful Hints If the content you are discussing in a paragraph is all from one source (such as your textbook), cite the source at the beginning of the paragraph (after the first sentence) and at the end (after the last sentence), as well as after any direct quotes. A good paragraph is between 4 and 8 complete, thorough, grammatically correct sentences.

EXAM #1 Answer both of the questions below in detail. Each question is worth 50 points. See the associated grading rubric for precise details on how to earn points. Briefly, answers will be graded on whether they answer the question, whether they are accurate, whether they are grammatically correct, and whether they are logically assembled. Each answer can be no longer than five pages double spaced (no smaller than 11 point font); I will not read beyond the fifth page (a total of ten pages excluding the title page and reference page). There is NO minimum page length, but the answers will likely approach 4-5 pages in length. The answers should include all relevant citations (excluding a pertinent citation will result in a lower grade). Exams must be delivered to the Digital Dropbox (on Canvas) no later than 11:59 pm EST on February 27th (no exceptions100 points are deducted for each minute that the paper is late). I will not accept exams via email. All exams must include a reference page and your name should be typed on the last page of the exam. Last words of advice: do not cheat or plagiarizeI will catch you and you will fail the course. All work must be conducted individually and your exam must include only original work that has not been submitted for another course. Failure to follow these instructions will adversely affect your grade. Your grades will be posted on Canvas as soon as I have finished grading all of them. If you have any questions about the grade that you received, feel free to contact me. 1. Identify a population that is of interest to criminologists. Describe, in detail, the three most appropriate sampling procedures that you would use to draw a sample from this population. Be sure to explain these three sampling techniques fully and make sure you provide a strong rationale for why these three sampling techniques are appropriate for the population of interest. 2. Suppose you were interested in determining whether a variable, X, is a cause of another variable, Y. If you had unlimited resources at your disposal, describe the research design(s) that you would use to try to figure out whether X is really a cause of Y. • paper 1

    Paper Prompt:

Should Scared Straight and similar programs be widely used to deter at-risk and delinquent youths from reoffending?

In answering this general question, please also consider these more specific questions to guide your analysis:

    • How does the Scared Straight program apply ideas from deterrence and rational choice theories? Make sure you explain the ideas behind these theories, where they come from, and how they are utilized by the program. Be specific to link specific ideas from the theories to specific scenes from the film. (The film is available in Brightspace in the Course Videos module.)
    • Is there evidence that programs like Scared Straight work in preventing crime? Explain! Here, you should refer not only to the film, but also to research on this question (see the articles posted below in this module, as well as relevant sections of Posick, chapters 9 and 11).
    • Are there limitations or flaws to Scared Straight and similar intimidation-based programs? Are there important factors behind juvenile offending that such programs are not able to address?

Provide as much detailed evidence as possible from relevant sources from the course to make each point and support the overall argument of the paper.

    Format and References

The paper should be about 4-5 pages (not including title or reference pages), double-spaced, with 12 font and 1 margins. The paper should include in-text citations and a reference page in ASA or APA format. (You can use the guides on how to use ASA and APA provided in Brightspace; go to Course Resources Research Assistance.) Remember, when citing the book or an article, you need to include page numbers to identify exactly where in the reading the information you discuss can be found.

You must cite at least four course materials in the paper. These should include (a) relevant sections of the Posick book, (b) the documentary film Scared Straight, (c) and the two articles on the topic posted in the “Course Readings” Module by Klenowski et al., and Petrosino et al.

Make sure to include an introductory paragraph that presents the topic of the paper and the main point(s) you intend to make; at least one paragraph on each major point you make throughout the paper; and a conclusion paragraph that summarizes the analysis. It is good to use quotes from the readings, but otherwise, the essay should be written in your own words.

You will be graded along five main dimensions:

    1. Thesis: What is the general argument you will make? The thesis should be clearly stated and easily understood, and grounded in the course materials and subject matter. The thesis should remain the focus of the paper from start to finish.
    2. Description, Details and Evidence: A rich description of the issue or problem should be provided. The research should be sufficient to support the main arguments. A sufficient understanding of course concepts/theories should be demonstrated.
    3. Organization and Clarity: The paper should contain a logical structure (such as, an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion), and transition smoothly between paragraphs. Each paragraph should be focused, with minimal repetition.
    4. Spelling and Grammar: There should be few spelling, grammatical, or punctuation errors. Your writing should exhibit proper English mechanics through sentence variety.

    5. Citation of Sources: All data, information, and ideas should be properly cited in ASA or

APA format, with an accompanying reference page. Appropriate sources, as instructed

    above, should be referenced accurately.

  • Week 7 Term Paper CM100

    nstructions

    Term Paper Assignment Directions:

Each student is required to write a APA Style 7th edition term paper that consist of three (3) full pages of substance, not including the cover page and reference page.

It is more important that the 100 level student work on writing mechanics so that you start to demonstrate critical thinking in your written communications. Academic writing takes practice and is a process. The only way to improve academic writing skills is through practice and writing papers.

Each paper must include at least three peer-reviewed journal articles that support your analysis. Students must format in-text citations and references in APA Style 7th edition.

Your work will be graded using the Formal Written Assignment Final Paper Rubrics (see attachment). Make sure that you use the writing criteria as a checklist as you edit your paper and hit on all of the Exemplary areas of the rubric.

There is an Example Student-Paper APA Style 7th Edition (se attached) and the Feel free to use the APA Style Example Paper as a template to help you format your paper if you wish; however, you will not be graded on your ability to properly format in APA Style.

Students will be introduced to APA Style formatting as you progress in your studies; however, it is more important that you learn how to write in an organized manner, have a good thesis statement, supporting paragraphs that flow into the next paragraph, and start to demonstrate critical thinking by analyzing the literature at this level of your education.

    • Stay away from using Quotes. Paraphrase your analysis and stay away from using quotes in your paper. What is needed is your original analysis of the literature. If you use direct quotes, you will lose points. Once again, your analysis in your original voice is needed.
    • Think about the audience that you are trying to connect with in your paper. Are you writing to the discipline, profession, or policy-makers, etc.? Use scholarly language that demonstrates your command of the topic.
    • Stay away from using first person voice. Work on using third person. Make sure you are not using the passive voice in your work. Use good time management and edit your paper looking for errors so that you submit your best work.
    • A good tool to use for your academic writing is to set-up your Word document to check for basic spelling, English & grammar errors, passive voice, and first person. To do this you need to set-up the advance setting in your Word Spell Check. This tool is a great resource to help you establish good writing habits and edit your paper.
    • Your work should be your own original writing. Please view the university plagiarism policy to avoid problems. Make sure to give credit to all sources that inspired your thinking with in-text citations in the body of your work and listed in alphabetical order on your reference list.
    • Your work is to be submitted in a Word document and uploaded within the assignment section of the class. The Turnitin function will automatically check your work for originality once you have submitted work, and generate a report within 10-15 minutes of submitting the assignment. Both student and professor will be able to retrieve the Turnitin report.
    • Writing should be organized and flow smoothly. Make sure that you edit your work before submitting so that you turn in your best quality work. Make sure to view the CJ Formal Written Assignment Final Paper Rubric attached as checklist so that you cover all graded areas in paper.

Students must select one of the topics below to research and write on. The topic choice is up to the learner, but the top selection must come from this list.

    • The United States Criminal Justice System
    • Criminal Law in the United States
    • The History of US Law Enforcement
