UNIT 8: DRAFTING YOUR PERSUASIVE ESSAY

This discussion allows you to post a draft of your essay so that you can receive feedback from your peers and the instructor.

    POST 1: INTITAL RESPONSE

You may find it helpful to post your paragraphs early in the unit to have time to revise them for the units assignment based on the feedback you receive and the insights you find from the readings and learning activities. This does not need to be a complete draft, but to be ready to revise for the Unit 8 Assignment, post at least four paragraphs, including an introduction paragraph. You can include the paragraph you wrote for the Unit 7 Discussion and indicate what revisions you made based on the feedback you received.

Follow these steps as you complete your discussion post.

    Steps:

A draft of your introduction for your persuasive essay using one of the techniques described in Crafting Effective Introductions and Conclusions.

A thesis statement as the last sentence of your introduction.

A draft of at least three body paragraphs for your argument.

Wrap up with an open-ended question about something you need help with, specific feedback you would like to receive, or introduction strategies.

Use the downloadable Peer Review Chart to provide feedback for your classmates this week. When responding to a peer, exercise tact and be specific in what you say. Take your time and develop your thoughts so that you can help out a fellow writer. Please do not focus on or mark GUM (grammar, usage, and mechanics) issues. Be sure to address your classmates question and note any lingering questions you have about your classmates argument for change

    Writing an Argument for Change

    Assignment Instructions

The academic essay in this unit will be a written, cohesive argument for the change in your community you have written about throughout the course. The assignment should be a persuasive academic essay in which you will provide reliable evidence from at least four sources to support the argument for change you are advocating. You will also need to address a rival perspective, counterargument, or misconception about your topic within the essay and a response to it, as the ability to do so is a key component of a strong argument. Essentially, the essay will reflect what you have learned about writing effectively, using research, and creating a logical argument to influence an audience.

The essay should be cohesive and utilize effective transitions between and within paragraphs. Paragraphs should exhibit the Four Cs of effective writing as described in this podcast. A formal tone should be used for most of the essay (e.g., stay in third-person voice, avoid slang, etc.). As an option, you may use first-person pronouns in one paragraph of the essay if you would like to incorporate a piece of personal experience.

    Requirements

Your persuasive essay must be a minimum of 3 pages, not including the title and reference pages, and should include the following elements:

Title page: Provide your name, title of assignment, course and section number, and date.

    Body:

Introduction paragraph that establishes the issue

A persuasive thesis statement at the end of the introduction

Well-developed paragraphs that address each of your three thesis points

Evidence from sources to support your argument for specific change in your community

A rival perspective, challenge, or misconception and a response to it

A conclusion paragraph that brings the essay to an effective close

Please be sure that you use effective transitions between and within paragraphs.

Reference page: Sources listed in current APA format with at least four credible sources appropriate for academic research that is cited in-text and on your references page. All cited sources need to have full citations on a references page (except for any interviews you conduct, which only require in-text citations).

Formatting: Current APA formatting for the document, including an appropriately formatted title page and references page.

    Additional Requirements:

Paragraph transitions: The essay should be a cohesive piece of writing that utilizes effective transitions between and within paragraphs.

Four Cs: Paragraphs should exhibit the Four Cs of effective writing as described in this podcast.

Tone: A formal tone should be used for most of the essay (e.g., stay in third-person voice, avoid slang, etc.). As an option, you may use first-person pronouns in one paragraph of the essay if you would like to incorporate a piece of personal experience.

Submit your essay to the Unit 8 Dropbox in a Microsoft Word document or a PDF.

When you submit your assignment to the Unit 8 Dropbox, it will automatically be analyzed by the plagiarism detection tool Turnitin. (Note: Turnitin also provides a report on AI usage, but currently, only faculty have access to this report). Soon after you submit your assignment, you will be able to view the Turnitin Similarity Report. If you see highlighted passages that indicate matches to sources, make sure they are properly cited and quoted or, even better, revise and paraphrase them in your own words. This process ensures academic integrity and will help you avoid unintentional plagiarism. For more on accessing and interpreting the reports, review Using Turnitin: How to Use Turnitin Reports to Help Prevent Plagiarism.

  • Assignment 6

    <subject is death penalty>

For the Unit 6 Assignment, you will include four credible sources related to your idea for change. For each source, begin by listing the reference list citation, followed by a paragraph discussing and assessing the source.

Your Research Planning Guide should include the following:

    Title page in APA format

Your revised thesis statement for an argument for change in your community

Four reference list citations in APA format (You may use the sources you found in Units 4, 5, and 6)

Four paragraphs (510 sentences per paragraph), one for each source, avoiding direct quotes throughout.

One of your sources should address a rival hypothesis or misconception about your topic (NOTE: The source does not have to oppose your thesis; it just needs to help you address a rival perspective)

Revise to ensure your writing is clear, concise, complete, and correct, following the Four Cs of good writing

    Paragraphs should include the following:

1- to 2-sentence summary of the sources main idea, followed by an in-text citation, e.g. (Smith, 2021).

Evaluation of the sources credibility. Provide two reasons, such as the authors credentials and the currency of the source; your evaluation should also include where you found the source (Library, Google search engine, government website, etc.). Use the criteria covered in Evaluating Sources to guide your evaluation.

Finally, paraphrase a key point from the source that supports or challenges your thesis and include an in-text citation. Discuss how you will use the source to support your argument for change in your community. If the source presents a rival perspective or challenge to your argument, indicate how you will address this challenge.

NOTE: No separate references page is needed, but each annotation should have a complete reference citation in APA format.
