    Research Methodology

    Scientific Inquiry

Paper demonstrates competence in accessing and critically appraising literature:

    – Paper includes a minimum of 8 literature sources (references) from the approved journal list.

    – Paper references are derived from higher levels of evidenced-based research, e.g. systematic reviews / Meta analyses, randomized controlled clinical trials, non-randomized clinical trials rather than observational studies, case series and reports and expert opinions.

Conclusions reached in each learning objective are supported by evidence references.

The paper applies basic scientific knowledge into clinical application. Data found is transformed into a practical context.

    Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

All learning objectives are addressed with demonstration of critical thinking and problem solving.

    Critical thinking includes:

    – gathering correct and applicable data from different sources.

    – Evaluating alternative approaches.

    – identifying priorities from data.

    – connecting, comparing, contrasting and inferences across data.

    – applying the identified data to formulate an answer to each learning objective.

    – evaluating if the data found answers the learning objective effectively.

    Problem solving includes:

    – Student is able to demonstrate how the knowledge acquired from the literature applies to patient care (i.e. Solve a clinical challenge, prevent failure of treatment and/or adverse patient outcomes, improves procedural outcomes, etc).

    – applying knowledge found into new questions and expanding the data search accordingly.

    – formulate hypothesis and test these against literature searched.

Late will incur a deduction of points within the Professionalism Course 1549. Professional Responsibility domain.

This paper will be worth 30 points. A Satisfactory grade is required in all domains to achieve a full score of 30 points and to pass the course. Students receiving an Unsatisfactory grade in any component will be required to complete remediation with appropriate faculty, followed by paper review and resubmission for a maximum score of 21 points (70%).

  • Culturally competent care in dental hygiene

Dental hygienists increasingly care for patients from culturally diverse backgrounds and with varying social, religious, and health-related needs. Providing effective and ethical oral health care requires more than clinical skill, it requires cultural competence, self-awareness, and social responsibility. In at least 500 words, discuss how a dental hygienist can provide culturally competent care to a patient from a diverse population. In your essay, be sure the address the following: Explain the concepts of health equity, health disparities, and social determinants of health, and how they may influence a patient’s oral health outcomes. Discuss the role and social responsibility of the dental hygienist in promoting access to care and health promotion for underserved or vulnerable populations. Analyze how biases, stereotypes, and assumptions can affect provider-patient interactions and clinical decision making, Describe specific culturally competent communication strategies that can be used to improve cross-cultural dental practice. Use course terminology and concepts to support your discussion. You may draw on real-world examples, clinical experiences, or hypothetical patient scenarios to illustrate your points. AI Policy: All usage of AI must be properly cited in the text of the paper, listed as a reference, and include a footnote at the end of the document. All papers will be run through an AI detection software program. Any paper that has more than 30% AI usage will be re-assigned to be written again and/or may receive a ZERO. Please ensure you follow the grading rubric and follow the expectations of writing outlined below. Expectations of writing: Students are expected to write at a Bachelor’s of Science college level. The following components should be displayed in the students writing ability: Writing clearly and concisely Before beginning to write, students should order thoughts logically, both at the paragraph and at the sentence levels. In scientific writing, sound organizational structure is the key to clear, precise and logical communication. The prime objective of scientific reporting is clear communication. Students can achieve this by presenting ideas in an orderly manner and by expressing themselves smoothly and precisely. Establishing a tone that conveys the essential points of the assignment in an interesting manner will engage readers and communicate ideas more effectively. Readers will better understand student ideas if there is an aim for continuity in words, concepts and thematic development from the opening statement to the conclusion. Grammar and usage Incorrect grammar and careless construction of sentences distract the reader, introduce ambiguity and generally obstruct communication. For more information and to ensure proper usage of verbs, pronouns, nouns, adjectives and adverbs, no misplacing modifiers, using relative pronouns and subordinate conjunctions correctly, and proper usage of parallel construction, students ae encouraged to reference the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Mechanics of style Punctuation- Punctuation establishes the cadence of a sentence, telling the reader where to pause (comma, semicolon, and colon) stop (period and question mark) or make a detour (dash, parentheses, and brackets). Punctuation of a sentence usually denotes a pause in thought; different kinds of punctuation indicate different kinds and lengths of pauses. (APA, 2019) Spelling- Students should conform to standard American English as exemplified in Merriam-Websters Collegiate Dictionary. Citing Sources All sources must be cited to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism- Plagiarism is when authors present the work of another as if it were their own work. Whether paraphrasing, quoting an author directly, or describing an idea that influenced a student’s work, students must cite the source. References in APA publications are cited in text with an author-date citation system and are listed alphabetically in the reference list. This style of citation briefly identifies the source for readers and enables them to locate the source information in the alphabetical reference list at the end of the case study paper. Each reference cited in text must appear in the reference list and each entry in the reference list must be cited in text. Students must make certain that each source referenced appears in both places and that the text citation and reference list entry are identical in spelling of author names and year. (APA, 2019).
