    Name:

Popular Science Lab #7: Fundamental Physics

    (0) Were you present in class for this class session? If not, please briefly note why you

were absent and what you did to engage with the class session in spite of not being

present in-person (e.g., did you complete specific readings, talk with someone you know

    in the class, etc.?).

    (1) You will be assigned one of the following sets of topics to work through as an

    individual:

    1. Hadrons and leptons

    Matter and antimatter

    Families of subatomic particles

    2. Quarks and strong force

    Standard model (of particle physics)

Unification of forces, grand unified theory and theory of everything

    3. String theory

    M theory

    Extra dimensions

Consider Paul Davies and (if applicable) Brian Greenes treatment of your assigned

topics, and try to understand them as deeply as possible: what the terms mean, what they

tell us about fundamental physics, and how they connect with the big picture of what

matter is made of and how it behaves. Write down some relevant information about each

of the three topics you were assigned.

[If you were not in class, please select two sets of topics to discuss, a total of six topics.]

  • Reading Response 04: Reading Annotation

    Reading Response 04: Reading Annotation

    Annotation

For this assignment, use quotations from the readings to highlight important concepts, mark areas where you have questions or want to focus our discussion, and make connections between the two texts. This will help you practice close reading, make connections between the authors, and prepare for our in-class discussion.

    Assigned Readings:

    • Byrum, Greta. ” Urban Omnibus (Digital Frictions), October 2019. Accessed online.
    • Holt, Jennifer and Patrick Vonderau. “‘Where the Internet Lives’: Data Centers as Cloud Infrastructure.” Signal Traffic, 2015, pp. 71-88.

    What to Do:

    1. Choose 3-4 short passages from these readings that you found provocative, confusing, or important. At least 1 passage must come from each text.
    2. For each passage, write a short annotation (34 sentences) that explains:
      1. Why did you choose it? What drew your attention to this passage? Why does it matter?
      2. What questions does it raise? What do you want to explore or understand more deeply?
      3. How does it connect to other ideas? Link the passage to another course concept, a reading, or even a personal experience with technology.

    Format & Requirements:

    • Length: 3-4 quoted passages and annotations for each
    • Format: Google Doc, Word Doc, or PDF
    • Reference both readings (at least one quotation from each)
    • Focus on analysis and reflection, not just summary
    • Cite your sources
      • Put each passage in quotation marks and include page numbers
      • Write your annotation directly beneath it
      • Submit all annotations together in a single document

  • Homework 1

Follow the instructions in the Homework file (attached below). Check your file before submitting it. Converting the file in pdf and submitting can be helpful but it is not necessary. I will not give a second chance for submitting the wrong file or missing basic information like the name of the student, calculation, etc.

I am attaching the HW1 below. Make sure to work on those questions carefully as those questions are very related to the upcoming Exam 1.

  • Earth and Space Exploration Question

    ALA 315 / Popular Science

    Unit Essay #1

(25 points, due by the start of class on 2/3)

You will submit two unit essays in this course, responding to a given prompt or set of

prompts. Essays should be 2-3 full pages, 1.5 (space-and-a-half) line spacing

(approximately 800-1200 words). Essays will be submitted via the Canvas Assignments

feature. Please do not forget to cite specific readings in your essays. (In-line citations

are appropriate; no need for a full bibliography.) Be concise, but include specific

details from readings and class; show me what you know and have thought about!

For your first essay, please respond to one of the following two prompts.

    (1) What can and cant science tell us about humanitys place in the universe or ultimate

significance? Critically discuss and integrate at least 3 specific readings from Unit 1 in

    responding to this question.

    (2) The Dalai Lama writes in The Universe in a Single Atom: I have noticed that many

people hold an assumption that the scientific view of the world should be the basis for all

knowledge and all that is knowable. This is scientific materialism. Although I am not

aware of a school of thought that explicitly propounds this notion, it seems to be a

common unexamined presupposition. (p. 12) To what extent do you think that scientific

materialism is a common unexamined presupposition in the works we have read (or

seen excerpts from) for Unit 1? Justify your response with at least 3 specific examples

    from Unit 1.

By submitting this assignment, you are affirming that your assignment submission is your

own authentic work, as defined in the course syllabus and discussed in class. Please

avoid AI use in general, but carefully document the exact nature of any AI use that did go

into composing the words you are submitting here, and please include an appropriate

(brief) citation any time you incorporate or draw on another persons written or spoken

    words.
