1-3 Activity: Structure of the Criminal Justice System
CJ 550 Module One Activity Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
The organization and structure of criminal justice services is an important building block in the quest for improved institutional performance. Understanding how departments interact with each other is the foundation of understanding whether or not the organization is meeting the goals of its mission statement. The diagram you create in this activity will serve as a visual representation of how the organization is structured and a starting point for your strategic plan.
Prompt
Create a diagram or outline in which you display the structure of the criminal justice department that you are hoping to join after you complete your degree program. If you currently work in a criminal justice department, you may create a diagram of its structure. See this example diagram to assist you in completing the activity. However, you are not limited to this format. There are a variety of tools that you could use to create your diagram, including (but not limited to) Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Bubbl.us. Regardless of which tool you use to create your diagram or outline, you must submit the final artifact as a DOC, PPT, or PDF file.
Be sure to select the specific geographical area in which you wish to work, as that will influence the departments structure.
In addition to submitting your diagram, include a 3- to -5 paragraph paper reflecting on how the structure of the criminal justice department that you selected for this assignment is similar to and/or different from the organization presented in the case study in final project.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
Constructs a diagram representing the structure of a criminal justice department.
Composes the structure of the criminal justice department specific to the geographical area.
Compares and contrasts the selected organization from the organization presented in the case study.
Analyzes how each department within the organization works symbiotically to achieve its mission statement.
What to Submit
Your diagram or outline must be submitted as a one-page Microsoft Word document, PowerPoint file (PPT), or PDF file. In addition, your reflection must be submitted as a 3- to -5 paragraph Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Any sources used must be cited in APA format.

Assignment 5: Develop a Teaching Resource for Qualitative Da…
This weeks assignment draws on all that you have learned so far, so please refer to the materials provided in previous weeks (Weeks 1-4). You are welcome to refer to any new materials of your choice in the form of books and peer-reviewed literature. Now would also be a good time to search the Library databases and LibGuides and seek some additional literature. In fact, you may indeed have begun to do this already!
In this weeks assignment, remember to include relevant citations to substantiate any claims that you make. You may also include relevant examples as needed to explain a point. Be sure to review all the feedback that you have received from your professor so far. Also, be sure to refer to your research journal, where you have been noting questions, thoughts, and reflections regarding the process of analysis. If you have not yet started writing a research journal, this might be a good time to start! Remember, journaling is central to qualitative research, stimulating reflexivity and addressing the important role of the researcher as a reflective practitioner (Bloomberg, 2023).
Be sure to review this week’s resources carefully. You are expected to apply the information from these resources when you prepare your assignments.
Instructions
This week, you are asked to switch roles and imagine you are a dissertation instructor. You have been assigned the task of explaining to your graduate students how to go about analyzing, evaluating, and presenting their research data. To do this, you will create a PowerPoint presentation.
In your presentation, explain the process of qualitative data analysis. For each slide, include applicable speaker notes, which can be in the form of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists. Remember, as you are creating this presentation, that it is important to keep in the forefront of your mind what new learning you want your students to come away with; that is, what you want them to know, understand, recognize, and acknowledge. As you think about this, you should brainstorm and jot down some ideas in your research journal.
This assignment can be completed by following these guided steps:
- Explain in detail with examples the basic qualitative analysis process. Refer to the relevant literature and include citations. Make sure that you mention all of the key elements that you have learned about data analysis in this course thus far, and use qualitative research terms and vocabulary.
- Provide an explicit detailed a priori coding example for instructional purposes. To do this, you will engage in a rather fun activity by developing and compiling a mock coding scheme to illustrate how the coding process takes place. Here is one example of how this is done: Have you noticed when you order coffee, the person taking your order usually writes your name and a few other letters on the paper cup? For example, you may notice the following letters on your cup (descriptions for each are provided in parentheses):
- CB Sk (cold brew skim milk)
- CB Oat (cold brew oat milk)
- MOC FRAP LI (mocha frappucino light ice)
- CB H/H (cold brew half/half)
- L S/M (latte skim milk)
- S F/C (Small, full cream milk)
- CB LI -PM (cold brew light ice leave place for milk)
- DR 2SH/EXP (dark roast with two (2) shots of espresso)
- XMAS-NS-NC (Christmas blend, no sugar, no cream)
- What the person taking your order is actually doing is providing a code of your order for the barista who is making the drink. The code is essentially a short-hand version of the drink you have ordered. You can use this same concept to explain the coding process to your students. To illustrate the coding process, choose one of the following coding scenarios or metaphors and develop 12-15 applicable codes to create your mock coding scheme:
- Taking inventory in a toy store
- Selecting plants to be delivered to the botanical garden
- Taking inventory at a used car lot
- Packing a suitcase for a beach holiday
- Packing a suitcase for an Antarctic trek
- Explain in detail with examples how data analysis aligns with research design. Refer to the relevant literature from Weeks 1-4, and include scholarly citations as needed.
- Here, you will be providing your reflections in details on the analytic process that you have conducted. You will need to choose to respond to at least four reflective questions posed by Bloomberg (2023). Note that this text is located in the Bookshelf section of the course resources.
- Reflective questions, pp. 134 to 317. Address four questions of your choice (2 – 4 slides).
- Last slide Provide a final reference slide.
Your presentation should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to the University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
