  • M3 Assignment

By now you have read Chapters 9-13 in the Kaiser & Rasminsky (2017) text, watched two videos and engaged in discussions with your peers. Using the information you have learned in this module, choose 1 of the following two examples that most resonate with you to complete for your Module 3 assignment. Option 1: Interview and Make a Plan In Chapter 11 of the Kaiser, et al., (2017) text, the authors recognize that many classrooms have children with diagnosed disabilities in attendance. While a diagnosed disability does not mean the child will have challenging behaviors, it can mean that the environment may be challenging for them. Creating an inclusive program allows all children to have opportunities to succeed and can help prevent challenging behaviors. For this assignment you will be using what you have learned from your readings as well as interviewing a professional with experience working with children with diagnosed disabilities. You will write a 4-5-page APA paper that includes the following. Select someone to interview. That person could be a Speech, Occupational, or Physical Therapist, a teacher with a degree in special education, or similar. Develop 5-7 questions to ask your interviewee that will help you to better understand what children with diagnosed disabilities may need in a group setting. Please add the interview to your paper. Adding photos of furniture, materials, or spaces can help enhance your paper. List 2-3 things you learned from your readings and interview and discuss how they will help prepare you to teach in an inclusive classroom. Reflect on the benefits of inclusion and how you think your practices will impact children with diagnosed disabilities. Option 2: Create a written plan for meeting with a family Interview and create a written plan for meeting with a family Developing authentic, collaborative relationships with families is an important step in helping children with challenging behaviors. For many educators, meeting with families about challenging behaviors their child is exhibiting can be a daunting task. Intentionally planning for these meetings can help alleviate nervousness and lead to better outcomes for both the family and child. Using what you have learned in Chapter 12 of the Kaiser, et al., (2017) text, you will be developing a written plan for meeting with a family member about a challenging behavior their child is struggling with in your program. You will also briefly interview a parent or guardian for their perspective. This does not have to be the parent or guardian of the child in your plan. The parent interview is meant to inform the structure of your parent meeting. Confidentiality is essential when working with children and families. Please do not use any identifying information including names, birthdates, address, locations of programs, etc. Your final submission will be a 4-5-page APA style paper. Please consider the following when writing your paper: Briefly interview a parent or guardian for their perspective on a meeting discussing their childs challenging behavior. Find out what would make them comfortable, what outcomes they would like to see, and how they would like to be involved. Include the interview in your paper. (using non-identifying information only) Provide a brief overview of the child, the family, and the behaviors you are seeing. Include what you believe is important for the reader to know. Describe how you will approach the family. What is their preferred method of communication? Are there any language barriers? Where will the meeting take place? Reflect on why these details are important. Describe what preparations you will make before the meeting. Do you have items in writing? Do you have resources to share with the family? Have you collected all the information you need from your team? What is the plan during the meeting? What skills or strategies will you use and why? How will you create a collaborative atmosphere between you and the family members? What is the plan for follow-up and/or next steps after the meeting? How will you debrief your team? Reflect on and evaluate your plan. How do you think your personal bias’s may affect collaboration with the family? What skills do you think need further development?
