  • Week 9: Reflection Presentation

Create a PowerPoint Presentation to share my reflection.

Describe an educational theory that most aligns with my philosophy. (The educational theory that most aligns with my philosophy is the Progressivism Theory in Education, with elements of Constructivism in Education and Humanism in Education theories. )

    My Personal Educational Philosophy

My educational philosophy is that every student has unique strengths and inherent abilities to learn and grow academically and personally, and education should give birth to confidence and curiosity in all learners. I believe student learning should be engaging, student-centered, and relevant, all while academic content is connected to real-world experiences. Education extends beyond the mere exchange of information; it encompasses the cultivation of critical thinking, empathy, collaboration, and resilience. I aim to foster a classroom environment grounded in respect, high expectations, and inclusivity, ensuring that students feel secure enough to take chances, fail, learn, and grow from their mistakes. My philosophy is based on several key assumptions: that all students can learn when given appropriate support; that diversity enriches the learning experience; that relationships are foundational to academic success; and that education should empower students to think critically. These assumptions guide my instructional choices and interactions each day.

I hold this philosophy dear to my heart since I have witnessed, firsthand, the transformational role education can play. A nurturing and challenging climate of learning can change how students perceive themselves and their potential. I want each student to leave my classroom not only with academic knowledge, but with a belief in their own abilities. By fostering inclusion, equity, and strong relationships as well as celebrating diversity, I aim to ensure every student feels seen and supported. Ultimately, my goal is to empower students to become lifelong learners who are prepared to contribute thoughtfully and positively to their communities.

    Further Instructions:

    • Explain and give examples of how the educational theory aligns with the dispositions of accrediting bodies most closely associated with your specialization.

    OVERVIEW

The purpose of this assignment is to recognize the diverse needs of various student populations

although this assignment will focus on one spotlight diverse student who has definite needs in

speech and language acquisition or literacy development. Knowing the learner, the required

standards for the age group, the development stages, effective learning strategies, and reliable

assessments will bring each spotlight diverse student into focus. It will enable the candidate to

provide the best strategies to close the gaps in the literacy concepts which the student needs.

    INSTRUCTIONS

The candidate will design a PowerPoint presentation with a minimum of 10 slides. The

    PowerPoint presentation has 2 parts.

Part 1: The candidate will use words and pictures to describe a spotlight diverse student in

preK-2 who has gaps in speech/language acquisition or literacy development in other areas. This

diverse learners spotlight focus can be cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, academia-focused,

such as a specific learning disability, speech/language delays or other learning delays.

Part 2: The candidate will articulate a teaching philosophy of literacy by identifying key

background knowledge an educator needs to know about this student population, potential

strengths and weaknesses of this student population in the literacy areas, one intervention for

each of the literacy categories–reading, writing, and language, as well as accommodations in the

learning environment to meet the needs of this diverse group of learners with at least 3

    references.

Below is the PowerPoint presentation outline.

    Slide 1: Title slide

Slide 2: Name the preK-2 student with a hypothetical first name and identify the

    spotlight area.

Slide 3: Provide an overview of the developmental stage where this age student should be

in reading, writing, and language. Reference the ideas with class readings or other

    research.

Slide 4: Create a bulleted list describing the specific learning disability, speech and

language delays or other learning delays using research-based information. The students

gaps in literacy development can be cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, or academia-

focused in nature. Research should support the ideas clearly. Using the hypothetical

spotlight diversity student, describe the 5 strengths and 5 weaknesses including the

effects of the spotlight diversity on literacy development in reading, writing, and

language. This slide is specific to research to identify struggles in this area. Any of the

readings from class can be used to create factual components.

Slide 5: Provide at least one intervention to improve reading. Include how growth is

    measured in this area.

environment accommodations for reading. Include how growth is measured in this area.

Slide 7: Provide at least one intervention to improve language. Include a description of

Slide 8: Design through an image and description a language and literacy-rich

environment that would be beneficial to aid in the success of literacy development for

    this diverse population.

Slide 9: Conclude the presentation with overall philosophy of literacy in meeting the

needs of diverse populations and how SCRIP is integrated into the philosophy.

Slide 10: Reference slide. Remember if the reference is on the reference slide, it should

  • Assignment 7

For this week’s discussion board, access the website: Kids in the House: The Ultimate Parenting Resource Links to an external site.. The first video that populates is called: Effective Discipline in Early Childhood. View this first video. Select two more videos to watch (they are short and sweet!). Come back and share with your classmates which videos you saw, what you liked, what you disliked, and the practicality of their suggested implementation techniques. First, do you feel their suggestions are appropriate? After deciding one way or the other, do you feel the suggestions are realistic and practical? Why or why not? What different suggestions can you offer?
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Read the following articles:

Review this salient quote from the Politico article:

Brown, unlike Plyer and Roe, is considered to be one of the courts top five shining moments, Black said. It is not in jeopardy. Moreover, the court stopped enforcing Brown in any meaningful way about 40 years ago. So what is it that Brown is protecting at this point that society is actually doing? The answer is, not really anything.

Considering the first article from the Legal Defense Fund and what the quote from the Politico article posits, what are your thoughts? Think about our society today.

Post a substantive response to the following:

What are some issues facing education today which makes Brown v. Board of Education so important?

Is Brown v. Board of Education at risk for being overturned by the current Supreme Court Justices? What are your thoughts?

Special Note: Be sure to use the two articles mentioned above as part of the four needed sources.

  • Research Presentation Assignment

As you become more informed about the topics in education that play critical roles in allowing teachers to be the best in their field, I want to find out what topics in education are interesting to you. What topics have been on your mind since day one? As a student, what school policies didn’t make sense to you? What topics did you wish your teachers had more knowledge in to make your experience better? Going into the field as an educator, what topics/issues/questions do you have that you wish to become well-versed in so that you can have a bigger impact on your students? Please focus on your past and think about these As you begin to finalize your topic, please make sure to choose one that is specific enough for you to find enough information to write about, and not so broad that you find yourself lost in the vast amount of knowledge that exists about it. You will narrow your topics down to one. When researching a topic, you may begin by visiting a library or an online database. If you are using the internet, please limit your research to scholarly articles that have been backed by institutions that conduct research in the field. You will have to reference at least three sources. For this assignment, you will create a document summarizing three articles and connect it to the content you have read thus far in this course. As you go through each week’s readings and resources, learning more about the content in this class, continue to add more and more material and connections to your research topic! You will reference each of your articles using the APA formatting style and describe all of your findings with sufficient detail. Each paragraph should consist of 10-15 sentences, explaining the argument of the article, your connections to the content and what you have understood from this connection.
