The Structural Frame provides insight into getting organized, organizational structure and restructuring, and the role of teamwork and types of teams. Each discussion board is developed around a central tenet found in the readings. The writing prompt expects you to demonstrate your mastery of the material and the ability to apply concepts to an example of your choosing from your professional experience.
Writing Prompt
Relying on your professional experiences, you are asked to select an organizational structure and apply MIntzberg’s five-sector model and structural configurations to describe and analyze this organizational structure. You should compare the organizational structure to Mintzberg’s model, determine if all five elements are present, discuss any strengths and weaknesses you identify, and place the organizational structure into one of the structural configurations.
It is likely that the organizational structure you select may not “check all of the boxes” of Mintzberg’s five-sector model or fit neatly into one of the structural configurations. This does not mean the organization and its structure you selected are wrong because most organizations may be lacking in one of these areas, i.e., available financial or human resources or a structure defined by law or policy, for instance.
Be concise in your response to the writing prompt. Think paragraphs and not pages. The response to the writing prompt should be written in a scholarly voice, direct quotes from the readings should be appropriately attributed, and the assignment should be single-spaced.
Please do not use the name of the organization you select.
Introduction
The readings and video in Module 4 are intended to “stir things up” in how you may view organizations. If you did not know the publication date for Peter Drucker’s article, you might have thought it was very recent. Michael O’Malley describes the necessity for organizational development to evolve with institutional practices, which complements the Drucker article. Jimmy Hemmerling’s TED Talk is about organizational transformation, its consequences, and the importance of people.
Writing Prompt
Select one major organization/organizational development theme from one of these three resources. Please describe the theme, explain why you selected it, and why you think it is important.
As always, there is no one correct answer.
