As a teacher, the first time you need to call to report suspected child abuse can be very stressful. You often worry about the child, you worry that you may be mistaken, and you worry that the people you are reporting will find out that you called Child Protective Services.
Over a very long career, I’ve had to call to report four cases of suspected abuse of a child, and one time I had to report elder abuse. Every time I felt sad, uncomfortable and anxious, but I knew it was necessary.
It is very important that as a teacher you address your fears and focus on the fact that you are required by law to report any suspicion of abuse or neglect.
This week you have an opportunity to ask questions, share your experiences ( please do not mention names or schools where you may have had to report) but we can discuss incidents in a confidential way to help everyone learn.
Read and respond to at least two of your peer’s posts.
Word Count-150-200
EXAMPLE
1. One of my biggest worry about reporting suspected child abuse would be the fact that it just weren’t true. It would cause a lot of unnecessary pain and trouble for the child and parents. As well as those who would have to be involved in the investigation.
2. I am very grateful I have never had to report a situation like that, although I have had moments of suspicion
3. An example of neglect would be if a child would come to school unbathed and in dirty or tattered clothes, as well as if they came to school constantly hungry and without food. I remember one from when I was growing up one of my friends actually was being heavily neglected by her mother, her mother would always be late to pick her up from school. This would be every single day, and eventually the school did end up having the police and child protective services called because the mother just never came to pick her up one day.
4. I feel as a mandated reporter although we may not want to cause unnecessary trouble for families, we don’t know for sure whether a child is safe. There has to be a lot observing when it comes to being a mandated reporter, for myself I would always error on the side of caution. Just because what if nothing was ever said and that child end up not making it because I was too scared to and not sure if anything was really happening.

USE THE STORY A VERY OLD MAN WITH ENORMOUS WINGS -GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ
–
The last few weeks you have learned different types of literary themes. This week, you are working on crafting your second essay.
In a 1,000-1,250 (4-5 page) fiction response essay, respond to the following prompt. Your essay should be in MLA format, make use of support from the story or stories chosen (using quotation, summary and/or paraphrase) and should include citations in-text and on a Works Cited page.
Remember to avoid summarizing a story instead, focus on answering the question(s) and explaining why the quotes and passages youve chosen are significant. You do not need to consult research or outside sources for this paper.
Prompt: Write an essay examining how a text (short story or poem) of your choosing makes a statement about a social issue (class, race, gender, ageism, cultural identity). What claim does the story seem to be making? How does it use literary devices to illustrate its point? Is the text speaking to a specific audience or society? How does the text show this?
Remember: Use professional writing. Do not use personal pronouns like “you”, “us”, “our”, etc. Instead, use “individuals” or “society”.
Notes: The Fiction Essay
Write a second, one-paragraph summary of a current, authoritative article that directly answers your research question. The source should be different from the one you used in Discussion 5, and it should focus on another answer to your question (not the same main idea or emphasis as your source in Discussion 5). Your paragraph should be 6-more sentences, including at least one quote, and correctly cited the source APA style.
In the first sentence of the summary paragraph, give the title, author(s), and date of publication along with a sentence in your own voice that paraphrases the thesis. In the remaining sentences, emphasize only the main ideas that apply to your topic, and do not include details from the study like the methodology, statistics, or any numbers. Focus only on ideas; don’t include details or specifics from the article.
