  • Mid term paper

    Thanks for taking the time to consider this. Please, I’d like this paper to be a unique interpretation of The Fall of the House of Usher, by Edgar Allen Poe. I thought something along the lines of cabin fever, maybe environmental paranoia, or like the house represents the mental psyche, and the deterioration of both and how people should

    Assignment: Length: 6-8 Pages, double spaced

    Include a Works Cited (not included in the page count)

    Instructions:

    Use one or two primary texts from class so far (any of the novels, stories, or poems from Weeks 1-7). Focusing on one of these texts might be simpler than focusing on more than one, but this is flexible if you have a consistent point to make using multiple texts.

    Also use at least 5 outside sources. Of those 5, at least 2 need to be scholarly secondary texts that discuss or critique the primary text. For example, an article that discusses the reliability of the narrator in “The Fall of the House of Usher” would be considered a secondary text. You should be using the library catalog to find these.

    Remember, the main focus of the paper needs to be your idea/argument, backed up by language from the primary source. There should be a lot of quotes from the text you’re writing about.

    If you would like to continue with a thought you were working on in one of your journal entries, that is allowed and encouraged.

    Important components of this paper:

    • An introduction that introduces the primary text(s) youll be working with and the idea youll be exploring.
    • A clear thesis that shows the main point youre going to make in a specific and arguable way.
    • Direct quotes from the primary text (cited correctly) that illustrate your point. Remember, even though youre using secondary texts as well, the main focus should be your interpretation of the primary text. There should be cited evidence multiple times on each page.
    • Include information and ideas from the secondary texts, but make sure they dont overshadow your own interpretation of the book or poem youre working with. An author of a secondary text might provide backup for your ideas. Or they might show contrast (for example, the ideas in a secondary text are different from your own). It is important to show ideas from other sources, but it is just as important to keep your own ideas at the forefront.
    • A conclusion that reinforces the meaning youre creating with your interpretation. This could be a discussion about why its important to have insight into the idea youve just explained. Or it could be an explanation of how your ideas about the theme are different from the ideas in your secondary sources. Or it could be about how the knowledge you created in this paper changes how the book can be perceived. Or anything else you can think of that emphasizes that what you have communicated is worthwhile.
    • No AI influence or apparent AI influence. If your paper sounds like AI, it will be marked down even if you didn’t use AI. If your thinking, research, and writing seem to be dominated by AI, the paper will receive an F.

    Grading:

    A = You address a clear theme/idea consistently throughout the paper. You illustrate this idea using quotes from the primary text(s). You use evidence from secondary texts in a way that deepens your paper but doesnt overshadow your own personal interpretation. The main point is original enough to be worthwhile and coherent enough to hold the readers attention. You have well-formatted in-text citations and references at the end. No AI influence.

    B = You address a clear theme/idea consistently throughout the paper. You illustrate this idea using quotes from the primary text(s), but the quotes could be more plentiful or used in a clearer way. And/or your use if secondary texts slightly overpowers your own ideas. And/or the main point is good but could be more thought-out. And/or there are significant issues with formatting and citations. No AI influence.

    C = The main theme or idea is present, but it isnt clear throughout the paper. And/or the primary text doesnt receive enough attention. And/or the secondary texts arent used well. And/or there are major formatting and citation problems. A small amount of AI influence might be present.

    D = The paper doesnt have much clarity or focus. Attention to the primary text(s) is lacking. Secondary texts either arent used with a clear purpose OR the majority of the paper just reiterates secondary texts. Citations are lacking. There might be a moderate amount of AI influence.

    F = The paper wasnt turned in, shows little or no effort, or reeks of AI.

    NOTE: Scholarly sources, please don’t use spark notes, quizlet or anything like that. I need absolutely no AI. please and thank you.

    Also, I have below an example of not even that good of an example, its not perfect but its a similar idea of how the interpretation is unique.

  • Nature, Perception, and the Self

    Writing Prompt: Nature, Perception, and the Self

    Context: In the readings for this unit, writers and poets turn to nature not just as beautiful scenery, but as a way of thinking about perception, mindfulness, and our relationships to the world. Emerson, Thoreau, Wordsworth, Dickinson, and Mary Oliver all suggest that how we see nature shapes how we understand ourselves.

    Prompt: In a 5-7 page essay, examine how at least two authors from this unit use nature to explore a central idea about human experience (such as perception, solitude, belonging, memory, gratitude, grief, transcendence, mortality, or awakeningit could be any theme you see!)

    Consider questions such as:

    • How does nature functionas teacher, mirror, or force in our lives?
    • What role does attention or “seeing” play in these texts?
    • How do the writers explore nature through language, imagery, and form?

    You should analyze the texts in conversation with one another as you dig into the central idea they share.

    Your essay should have a clear, arguable thesis and engage closely with specific passages, providing numerous direct quotes in each body paragraph.

    Optional extension: You may conclude by briefly reflecting on how these ideas of nature resonateor fail to resonatein a contemporary context or in your own experience.

    I Become a Transparent Eyeball

    from “Nature

    By Ralph Waldo Emerson

    Collected Essays, Penguin USA, New York NY, 1982

    Crossing a bare common, in snow puddles, at twilight, under a clouded sky,

    without having in my thoughts any occurrence of special good fortune,

    I have enjoyed a perfect exhilaration.

    I am glad to the brink of fear.

    In the woods, too, a man casts off his years, as the snake his slough,

    and at what period soever1 of life is always a child.

    In the woods is perpetual youth.

    Within these plantations of God, a decorum2 and sanctity reign,

    a perennial festival is dressed,

    and the guest sees not how he should tire of them in a thousand years.

    In the wood, we return to reason and faith.

    There I feel that nothing can befall me in life, –

    no disgrace, no calamity (leaving me my eyes), which nature cannot repair.

    Standing on the bare ground,-

    my head bathed by the blithe3 air and uplifted into infinite space,-

    all mean egotism vanishes.

    I become a transparent eyeball;

    I am nothing;

    I see all;

    the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me;

    I am part or parcel of God.

    The name of the nearest friend sounds then foreign and accidental:

    to be brothers, to be acquaintances, master or servant,

    is then a trifle and a disturbance.

    I am the lover of uncontained and immortal beauty.

    In the wilderness, I find something more dear and connate4 than in streets or villages.

    In the tranquil landscape, and especially in the distant line of the horizon,

    man beholds somewhat as beautiful as his own nature.

  • Discussion

    Entertainment and society Feb 15 – Feb 24 Must post first. After reviewing this unit’s learning resources, respond to the following prompts: Discuss how entertainment has shaped and been shaped society. Provide some examples. What do you think are the benefits and challenges of having readily available entertainment at our fingertips? Shear (2019) observed that throughout most of history, entertainment was a “multi-player” endeavor, but somewhere along the way, it became a solitary activity. Why do you think this occurred? How can entertainment technology be used to promote a greater sense of community? Remember to use your own words, use your best writing skills, cite your sources, and provide a reference list. Your original response is due on Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. You should respond to the posts of at least two other students by Tuesday at 11:59 pm. Eastern Time. Refer to the syllabus for discussion guidelines.
