    Discussion Board 2

    11 unread reply.11 reply.

React to what you have observed in the assigned readings for Module 2. You should react by posting a comment for each of the four numbered topics below. After you have written a comment for each numbered topic, you will write a reply to a post that one of your peers has made about the three numbered topics. Every response or reply you make should be an effectively written paragraph with at least four sentences, so every paragraph you write should include a clear topic sentence and other sentences that provide supporting details.

Once a student has completed this discussion board assignment, they will have produced a total of three paragraphs as well as a Canva or PowerPoint slide presentation. Two of the three paragraphs will each be a response to one of the three numbered topics, and one paragraph will be a reply to another student’s work. Any post made by a student in this discussion forum should be intelligent and thoughtful, regardless of whether you are giving an opinion or a fact. You may be required to upload an illustration (such as a picture, table, or chart) and the written content needed for a particular post.

Feel free to like your peers’ comments. The student who gets the most likes will get three extra points added to their final grade on the first reflection essay assignment, which is due later.

Note: Topics 1 and 2 are worth 25 points each, and Topic 3 is worth 50. Points will be deducted if a post does not address a topic adequately. Moreover, points will be deducted if your writing is ungrammatical and not proofread for errors. Of course, you cannot get credit for a post that has not been made. Five points will be deducted for every grammar and punctuation error and typo.

Although each student will need to submit their own responses, I encourage students to work together to get all the parts of the discussion board assignment completed.

STUDENTS SHOULD AVOID RELYING ON AI TO COMPLETE THEIR WRITTEN DISCUSSION BOARD RESPONSES. IF NECESSARY, REFER TO THE SYLLABUS POLICY ON THE USE OF AI FOR COURSEWORK ACTIVITIES.

You will need to make a reply to Topic 1 first to enter the discussion forum.

After you post a reply/response to the first topic in the discussion board assignment, your responses/replies for all the other numbered topics should go in the thread for each. In other words, there should be one thread for all replies/responses that are addressing Topic 2, there should be one thread for all replies/responses that are addressing Topic 3, and there should be one thread for all replies/responses that are addressing Topic 4. Consistent with this setup, all the replies for Topic 1 would automatically go together.

The beginning of each thread for topics 2-4 can be found easily after you make a reply for Topic 1: Just look for the three spots that have my picture after you make your first post.

In short, if this works out the way it was intended, all the comments for Topic 1 will be together, all the comments for Topic 2 will be together, all the comments for Topic 3 will be together, and all the comments for Topic 4 will be together.

Topic 1. Read the article “Gamified Storytelling: what and how?” by Bowen Sun and think about what the article says about how gamification is used for problem-solving in connection to what we have already learned about how problem-solving is an inherent feature in storytelling. Remember, what motivates the main character/protagonist in a traditional story is a problem or set of problems they have to solve. When applying gamification, we also use incentives and rewards to start or intensify the motivation. For Topic 1, you must respond by citing a scenario from Alice in Wonderland that illustrates this motivation process being brought on by incentives and rewards. In other words, what is an example from the book that shows how the character Alice is rewarded after being incentivized to solve a problem that is a significant conflict for her? Because you are citing from the Alice in Wonderland book, I expect you to include page numbers from that work as part of your answer for Topic 1.

    Assignment 1

    Introduction

SMART is an acronym used to guide you with personal goal setting. Please view the below video for an explanation of SMART. I have also included a brief explanation of each as a quick reference.

    Specific

Your goal should be specific. This means that your goal should be well-defined and clear. Readers of the goal know who the goal is about, what is being accomplished, why the goal is important, etc.

    Measurable

Your goal should be measurable. This measures how much is needed for success and generally involves some numerical number. It answers questions such as “how much/little” and “how long”.

    Attainable

Your goal should be attainable (e.g., achievable). This means that your goals are realistic and healthy. For example, saying that you will lose 20 pounds in one week is both unrealistic and unhealthy. In general, less is more when it comes to setting goals. With time, you can change the parameters of your goals that may seem more realistic than they previously had.

    Relevant

Your goal should be relevant. This means that the goal will be worthwhile to YOU. Make sure that your goal is something that you personally would like to achieve.

    Time-Bound

Your goal should be time-bound. This is similar to the Measurable component, but specifically involves the “how long” portion. This allows you to more easily determine if you are meeting your goals by certain “benchmarks”.

    Your Task

Write 1 SMART goal related to a nutrition goal that you would be interested in working toward while completing the Dietary Analysis Assignments.

Please note that you should only write 1-2 sentences total for this assignment. Examples are provided in the above video.

Discussion 2: Food Marketing and Obesity

    Introduction

    Your Tasks

    TASK 1- ORIGINAL POST

Please discuss the following in your original post:

    1. How would you explain the high obesity rates in the United States despite changes to our food markets? Are we focusing on the wrong things? If so, what should we focus on instead? (15 points)
    2. The post must be at least 250 words. (2 points)
    3. Include at least 1 outside reference, cited in APA format. This reference needs to be cited both in-text and at the end of the post in a reference list. (3 points)

  • analyzing a belief

Length: Minimum 3 full WRITTEN pages; maximum 5 full WRITTEN pages

Format: MLA Format | Double-spaced | 12-pt font in Arial

Purpose: To analyze how a belief formed, why it seemed true, and what caused it to change

    Assignment Overview

People form beliefs about the world based on personal experience, family influence, culture, media, education, and social expectations. Some of these beliefs feel logical and reliable at the time, but later experiences, new information, or changing perspectives may reveal that a belief was incomplete, inaccurate, or incorrect.

In this essay, you will analyze:

    • A belief you once held that turned out to be wrong
    • OR
    • A belief someone else held that turned out to be wrong (this is the more difficult option)

    Your goal is to examine:

    • How the belief developed
    • Why it seemed reasonable at the time
    • What challenged or changed it
    • How the new understanding affected thinking or behavior

This essay should be more formal than the Audience & Identity essay, but it should still include personal insight and reflection.

    Essay Structure & Requirements

    1. Overview of the Belief (Introduction)

Your essay should begin with a formal overview of the belief.

    In this section, you should:

    • Clearly explain what the belief was
    • Describe how common or accepted the belief is
    • Briefly explain why people (including you or the person youre writing about) might believe it

This section sets up the topic before moving into personal experience.

Your introduction should end with a thesis statement that explains:

    • Why the belief was incorrect
    • What ultimately changed that belief

    Example Thesis:

Many people believe that success in life is guaranteed through hard work alone. However, personal experience has shown that mental health, opportunity, and support systems play a much greater role than effort by itself.

    2. Background: How the Belief Formed

    In this section, explain:

    • Where the belief came from
    • Who or what reinforced it (family, school, media, culture, etc.)
    • Why it seemed logical or trustworthy at the time

This shows how beliefs are shaped by external influences.

    3. Limited Research Component

You must include a small amount of research that provides background on the belief.

    This research should:

    • Be easy to find (general articles, credible websites, news sources, or educational resources)
    • Explain the belief, common misconceptions, or what experts say
    • Support your analysis, not replace it

Your essay should still focus mainly on personal experience and reflection, not heavy academic research.

    Examples of acceptable research topics:

    • Common myths about success
    • Misconceptions about mental health
    • Stereotypes about certain groups
    • Popular beliefs about education, relationships, or careers

    4. The Turning Point

Describe the moment (or series of events) that challenged the belief.

    This may include:

    • A personal experience
    • A conversation
    • New information
    • A failure or unexpected outcome
    • Exposure to a different perspective

Use specific details to show what caused the belief to change.

    5. The New Understanding

    Analyze:

    • What was learned
    • How the belief changed
    • What replaced the original belief
    • How thinking or behavior shifted

Focus on growth and awareness, not just the event itself.

    6. Reflection

    Your conclusion should reflect on:

    • Why this belief change matters
    • What it reveals about learning and perspective
    • How beliefs influence decisions
    • How this experience will shape future thinking

This section should connect personal experience to broader understanding.

    Topic Ideas & Examples

Students may write about beliefs such as:

    Personal Beliefs

    • Hard work always guarantees success
    • Mental health issues are just attention-seeking
    • Being busy means being productive
    • Failure means youre not capable
    • Social media shows real life

    Beliefs Held by Others

    • A parents belief about career success
    • A coachs belief about discipline
    • A teachers belief about learning styles
    • A cultural belief about gender roles
    • A public figures changed opinion

    What This Essay Is NOT

    A casual journal entry

    A rant or complaint

    A list of opinions

    A research paper

    A simple story

This is a formal analytical reflection.
