  • Virtue Ethics

Ethics PHI 1600 Second Written Assignment Virtue Ethics This paper assignment will ask you to talk about a specific virtue with someone like a friend, family member, or a religious leader. You will then write about your experience. In the paper please present what Virtue Ethics is, and the specific virtue you talked about with your friend, family member, or religious leader and present that dialogue in the paper. It does not have to be in a dialogue structure you can just share your experience and discussion. For example, you might have talked to your grandmother about the virtue “charity” how her dad wore the same pair of shoes year by year while she and her siblings received new shoes year by year showing his love for his children that he would deprive himself of new shoes so that they could have good ones. You should have an evaluation of that discussion–what do you think about that conversation and how it relates to the virtue discussed. The paper must have at least 600 words and be in MLA or APA format. Please use Microsoft word, in which you can access through your outlook email. DO NOT USE BULLET POINTS OR A CHECKLIST FORMAT. YOU WILL LOSE POINTS. I WANT AN ESSAY-FORMAT. **Aspects I will be looking for: 1) You did the assignment. 2) You explained Virtue Ethics. 3) You picked out one virtue and explained what it is. 4) You presented your dialogue of that virtue. 5) You evaluated your discussion.

      • Essay

        Length: 1,000 words

        Due: Friday Feb 20, 2026

        Assignment Description:

For this essay you will be limited to the following texts:

        • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
        • Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
        • Dracula

Pick one of these texts and write a 1,000 word essay that connects to any of the following themes or concepts:

        • Hybridity
        • Colonialism / Imperialism
        • Purity
        • Xenophobia / communal identity
        • Gender / Sex as they relate to power
        • Corporeality ie. symbolism and metaphors relating to the body
        • Legitimizing violence
        • Monstrosity
        • Folklore / superstition
        • Topic of your choice. Ask me in advance.

Your goal should not be to write an essay that simply identifies or explains the theme in the text. Instead, use the theme as a starting point for a specific, debatable and nuanced argument about that text. There must be something meaningful something that changes how we understand the text to your argument. Do not use secondary sources for this paper.

        How does Matt grade papers?

The most important element of your paper is your argument. Without an argument, youre not going to do well. But even having an argument isnt enough to get a high grade. Strong papers take an original and interesting position on the text. They require in-depth, persuasive analysis of textual evidence in order to be successful. A strong and original argument separates an average, and even slightly above average (B- or B), from a higher graded paper even though they technically follow all the same steps.

All that said, heres a more detailed list of what I look at as Im reading your paper:

Format: Did you format your paper according to MLA style?

Introduction: Does it successfully introduce the topic? Does it logically lead towards a thesis statement? Is that thesis statement at the end of the introduction?

Thesis: Does it make a debatable and thought-provoking claim that is specific and clear? Does it give a bit of a roadmap about how the paper will explain, prove, or validate the argument? Is it original and complex? Is it contained within a sentence or two at most?

Body paragraphs: Does it open with a topic sentence / claim that relates back to the thesis? Does it introduce evidence? Is the evidence a quotation (or quotations) from the text? Is there careful and deep analysis of the evidence? Does the analysis reveal a new perspective (something your peers would not have noticed)?

Conclusion: Does it reassert the argument? Is it logical that weve reached this conclusion?

Works Cited: Is there a works cited? Is it formatted correctly? Did they use MLA to cite throughout the text?

Overall: I will pay particular attention to quotation analysis and body paragraphs. Follow MLA style guidelines to format your paper. Remember to include a works cited page.

      • Research paper

This research paper, like any self-respecting academic research paper, blends information from two main sources: your own opinion, and existing scholarship written by others. Your opinion, here, means the argument you wish to make about our primary source, the play Antigone by Sophocles. Note that this means other kinds of writing, like summary of the plot, is not sufficient for what we are trying to do here. Your readers must know what you think; your research paper should have a unique personal stamp and not closely resemble that of any classmate. The main text of your research paper will attempt to persuade audiences that your point of view is reasonable. But we are not, in all likelihood, experts in literature, or ancient Greek drama. Therefore, we show our reasonableness by quotation: quoting the text of Antigone itself, to show that it really says what we claim it says, and quoting secondary sources, written by other scholars who publish in reliable places, to show that other people share our opinions, or that we are aware of them and have engaged with them seriously. Your class will introduce you to some secondary critical material of this kind and discuss with you some ways to evaluate sources for reliability. You will be asked to assemble a set of at least four secondary sources, including at least one that you find on your own through the Temple College Library. Topic Selection: You may write about any topic that interests you about the play Antigone. This could be a particular character, passage, issue, or situation in the text; you may also compare this play to some other literary text, as long as you spend the majority of your time discussing Antigone. Please let your instructor know if you have questions about any topic idea that comes to you, and let your interests guide you! Stipulations: The word count for this assignment must be at least 1100, excluding works cited page. The total number of sources must be at least five (5); that is, the primary text, Antigone, plus a minimum of four (4) secondary sources. Your essay should be double-spaced and in a standard, 12-point serif font (such as Garamond, Times New Roman, Century Schoolbook, Baskerville, etc.) Regular and substantial quotation and citation from all sources is mandatory, and key to the success of a research paper. Your quotations must be accurate and sufficient to give a sense for each authors meaning and style. They must be enclosed in quotation marks and followed by parenthetical citations giving an authors name and page number(s) on which that exact quotation may be found. If you paraphrase or summarize information from a text and do not quote, you are still required to offer a parenthetical citation leading to an exact page on which the information can be found. However, doing this alone is not sufficient; you must use quotation and paraphrase/summary together, not just one or or the other. Your submission must conclude with a works cited page that lists all of the sources, sorted alphabetically by authors last name. Block quotes: if your quote runs over four lines of text, you should reformat it to a block quote. These are indented one inch, do not include punctuation marks, and are followed by a parenthetical citation after the period. No guarantee can be made that there will be time for rewrites after the final submission is made. Therefore, you should submit your best work to this dropbox. Do not try your luck with a dishonestly produced product! Documentation of Research: In addition to the works cited page that forms the conclusion to your research paper, you must separately document all sources used in PDF format in the source dropbox. This means actually uploading those PDF documents, and highlighting the quotations you have used. (If your class uses a physical textbook, you do not need to upload those sources to the dropbox).
      • What is boredom

Write a 600-800 word essay in reaction to the article “Boost Your Brain with Boredom,” by Joel Streed. Before reading the article, think about what boredom means to you. Then read it, and react to what Boredom means to Streed. If you need something to kick off your reaction, here are three possible ways you could go:

        • Take one point the author makes and argue whether you agree or disagree with that point.
        • React to the author’s viewpoint in general. Is the author on the right track or missing something? Or both?
        • Argue whether or not you think the topic of boredom is important for today’s world. Why?
