  • Literary Analysis for The Nickel Boys book

Compose one paragraph with a key claim about how hope operates in some segment of The Nickel Boys. Use before you turn it in.

Here is my last one that I didnt do so well on.

In Katherine Applegates heartfelt novel Wishtree, a Northern Red Oak named “Red” operates as the epitome of a home for different collectives of living beings, such as raccoons, owls, skunks, opossums, and many more animals, highlighting how the humans in the story are inherently different from the animals but come together as a collective on one particularly day to have hope in Red. Even as the hateful word LEAVE is carved into the tree, in an attempt to exclude the group via a warning[KS1.1], they bring together an unlikely friendship that ultimately saves the tree’s life and its many inhabitants. The looming execution of Red on National Wishing Day glimmers an unforeseen reaction from nearby schoolchildren and the many animals living there, which sparks hope in Francesca upon reading her ancestor Maeve’s diary. Applegate hints at hope throughout the novel in small gestures, wishes, and acts of new friendships, but ultimately she argues that hope achieves meaning only when it moves individuals to act. Ultimately, by the novels conclusion, Reds extended existence demonstrates that hope is a decision to defend one another and build a home based on compassion and kinship, not just a wish.

    Here are her comments below

I think you wrote your way into your topic sentence by the end of your paragraph: Hope moves through the community as Red, the animals, and the human characters cooperate to produce a sense of belonging for all. With TS like that, you can then show textual evidence of how this works within the novel. You are missing several required elements in this paragraph, so please review the attached rubric. Blesses 1. You articulate a clear interpretive claim about hope. Your paragraph moves beyond a simple summary and makes a defensible claim: that the novel suggests hope achieves meaning only when it moves individuals [KS2.1]to act. That is a thoughtful interpretive point about how hope operates in the story, not just a statement that hope is a theme. This shows strong conceptual engagement with the novel. 2. You connect multiple narrative elements to your central idea. You reference several moments in the storythe carving of LEAVE, the animals living in the tree, the looming cutting of Red, and Francesca reading Maeves diary. Pulling together these different moments shows that you are thinking about patterns across the novel rather than focusing on only one isolated detail. Presses 1. Move from general description to close attention to language. Right now, the paragraph mostly summarizes events in the novel. The rubric asks you to use a brief quotation and analyze specific language choices (diction, imagery, phrasing, etc.). For example, you mention the carving of LEAVE, which is a great moment to zoom in. What does that word suggest about exclusion, belonging, or fear? How does the starkness of the single word shape the scene? Slowing down to analyze a specific word or phrase will strengthen your interpretation. 2. Integrate textual evidence more directly. You refer to several moments in the book. Still, you do not yet quote and integrate textual evidence grammatically into your own sentences (one of the non-negotiable moves on the rubric). Try selecting a short phrase or line from the novel and embedding it in your sentence. Then explain how that language supports your claim about hope leading to action. For example, a revision might look something like this structurally: When the hateful command LEAVE is carved into Reds trunk, the single word compresses the hostility directed at Samars family and turns the tree into a visible marker of exclusion (Applegate, year, p. xx). Yet the story responds to that hostility not with silence but with collective action Notice how the quotation becomes the starting point for interpretation? Big Picture: You have the seed of a strong claim about hope as active rather than passive, which is exactly the kind of interpretive thinking we want in literary analysis. The next step is to anchor that claim in specific language from the text and analyze how the novels wording and imagery produce that meaning. If you revise with one or two short quotations and slow down to analyze them closely, this paragraph will become much more persuasive.

***Make sure it is for The Nickel Boys. Above is only an example from a previous version. Also, make sure I get an AI turn-in score. This is only a paragraph, but it needs to have textual evidence, but the rubric need to hit all check marks.

Evolution in Synth Pop and Industrial Metal

In two examples this week, Synth Pop and Industrial Metal, we can observe a clear evolution in genre. In one case, we see the move from a club based music to a more commercial approach (synthpop), while in the other we see the move towards darker subject matter and timbres (industrial). Of the examples given, which do hear more evidence of in contemporary music?

    Example 1

I would say I hear more synth pop influences in contemporary music. Many artists use machines to create their “perfect” sound while recording, and use some sort of synthetic effects even on live instruments. Auto tune and sampling can make anyone a commercial success. The mentality of industrial’s “devour everything organic” can be seen as well, but its not seen in a dark or heavy mindset. I know a lot of the artists I’ve listened to will say Depends Mode had a big influence on their style.

    Example 2

I hear more influence from synth pop in todays music. A lot of modern pop still uses electronic sounds, catchy melodies, and polished production that came from that style. You can hear it in big time artists who rely on synths and digital type beats. While industrial metal is still around, its darker and heavier sound isnt as common in mainstream music, so synth pops influence shows up more overall.

    Example 3

The two genre evolutions youre comparingSynth Pop becoming more commercial and Industrial Metal becoming darker and more aggressiveactually represent two very different paths that music can take over time. One moves toward accessibility and mass appeal, while the other moves toward intensity, experimentation, and emotional extremity. When we look at contemporary music today, both are still present, but they function very differently in terms of visibility, influence, and audience reach.

    Gangster Rap: reality or stereotypes

Consider the two viewpoints: Gangster Rap reflected the reality of life in many inner cities, and makes that reality known to a wider populace, or that Gangster Rap reinforced stereotypes about young African-American men for the sake of selling records. Give your thoughts on these viewpoints (or perhaps a different viewpoint).

    Example 1

In my opinion, I think both sides of gangster rap are true. A lot of gangster rap definitely tells a lot of their storytelling and what these certain types of artists were taught or went through throughout their lives. In my opinion, it definitely does give a voice to people who experience these types of things, and it is often ignored, but wrapping and telling us about it makes us understand how hard or how harsh the realities were growing up, and how they got brought into the gangster life. But also there is definitely some gangster rap that reinforces stereotypes or throughout time has reinforced stereotypes some pretty big artists I can think of could be Snoop Dogg or 50 Cent they have been criticized by an abundance amount of people for semi-promoting a certain different type of Lifestyle. in my opinion I think the music industry kind of surged or you could say Amplified the really bad extreme Parts because it sells music a lot better so it could be a lot more exaggerated.

    Example 2

I think that Gangster Rap reflected the reality of life in many inner cities. The messaging in these songs were not meant to reinforce stereotypes in my opinion. In my opinion, these songs were meant to show the public just how brutal inner city life is, and about how in order to survive life and make money, you had to be a “gangster”. I think that the messaging in these songs show a different side of America, the reality that the public does not want to come to terms with. I think these songs put into spotlight that inner city life isn’t the safest, but instead of coming to terms with the reality, the public would rather reinforce racist stereotypes than try and fix the problems.

    Example 3

Unfortunately, I believe both of these viewpoints have some validity or truth to them. It is evident by comparing local news at the time that the things they are rapping about do have relevance to current events. At the same time, seeing these rappers gain popularity and their lyrics about being delinquents and directly disobeying the law would appear cool to some younger teens. This is evident, especially as this is more prevalent today, considering rap groups in the Chicago area are directly connected to specific gangs. Young teens began to understand how doing these unlawful activities, as spoken about in songs, would gain them respect.
