This is a painting by the American artist Winslow Homer of a man aboard a ship in a storm, surrounded by sharks, in the Caribbean.

For this assignment, you will write an essay using personal experience. Naturally, all experiences have multiple perspectives, but for this essay, focus on your perspective. Remember, a conflict does not necessarily imply an aggressive altercation, nor does it need to be severe and intense; it can be casual or even playful. As we will discuss in class, conflicts and/or arguments typically suggest an aggressive altercation, but this is not always the case.

Use descriptive, carefully chosen language while writing or building this essay, but remember that this essay must have an argumentative purpose. That is to say, I want you to be rhetorical and persuasive. This is usually called a thesis statement, but you can think of it however you like. In summary, here is a checklist of what I want to see in this essay:

The minimum word requirement is 900 words. Of course, adhere to the MLA documentation standards outlined on the syllabus. You will submit this essay through D2L by midnight on the day that it is due.

Key Terms:

Evaluation: Writers evaluate a claim that something is good or bad, right or wrong, useful or not

Criteria: The criteria are based on the factors that matter in deciding whether your subject succeeds or does not succeed, is strong or weak, or good in some respects and poor in others

Judgment: The judgment is the establishment whether or not the criteria is met. In other words, the judgment is what actually is.

Evidence: The evidence is the details offered to support the judgment. The evidence is used to show how the judgment was reached.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to practice and develop the ability to construct, define, and support evaluative criteria, to generate a thesis based on evaluative criteria, and arrange, draft, and write a persuasive essay.
