Essay 1: Appeals and the Press

In class thus far we have studied the history of the abolitionist period and read appeals and fiery abolitionist and pro-slavery newspapers. These writers use a variety of arguments and appeals to convince their readers that they’re telling the truth about slavery, its insidious roots, and the wide-ranging impact this institution has on everyone and everything it touches. For your first response paper youll be presenting your own take on abolitionist arguments and appeals.

Write a 1200 words double-spaced essay appropriate for an academic audience in which you:

    • Choose one major argument or appeal from what we’ve read thus far (choose one specific, brief passage that you can discuss in detail). Explain why you think it’s an effective persuasion — why do you think the moment you chose is a particularly good way for writers to convince readers about the truth of slavery?
    • Show the reader how the argument or appeal you’re focusing on appears in one or two other texts we’ve read thus far. Where do you see writers using a similar strategy to the one you chose?
    • Explain the implications of the argument or appeal you chose for our understanding of the texts and/or abolition movement. What does your analysis show us about the abolitionists’ goals, strategies, and/or tactics? Lydia Maria Child, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimke, and the Pro-Slavery Press

  • gender analysis

Formal Paper 1 In our last unit, we have read several stories and essays and with special attention to the theme of gender norms and the dynamics between men and women, whether it be Girl by Jamaica Kincaid or How to date a Browngirl… by Junot Diaz. Non-fiction pieces include: Bros Before Hos: the Guy Code by Michael Kimmel, Devor’s “Gender Blending and The Gender Blur by Blum. Your assignment for this essay is to use this theme of gender norms as a focus for your analysis of two of the readings from this unit (one of which has to be a short story). What commentary or message about gender do the authors seem to be suggesting through their stories and essays? How do they encourage or influence you to think about gender norms and their impact? One of the most important things to remember is that your argument must address all parts of the prompt throughout the body of your essay. Support each of your assertions with relevant evidence from both texts. Use at least 5 quotes (3 of which should be from your story. At least 2 of your quotes should be paraphrased). Each body paragraph should have no fewer than 1-2 quotes. Your analysis should be at least as long as the length of your quote. Formatting: Double-spaced, 12-point font, standard academic formatting (e.g., 1-inch margins)

This assignment invites you to critically examine Mahatma Gandhi as an individual, analyzing his personality, beliefs, and actions as presented in his work An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments with Truth. Rather than exploring Gandhi as an idealized figure or a saint, this essay challenges you to assess Gandhi the man, with all his complexities, contradictions, and achievements.

Your essay should combine personal reflection with academic analysis, incorporating relevant material from the course and integrating specific examples from Gandhis autobiography. Support your arguments with evidence from the text and other course readings.

    Key Questions to Address:

In your analysis, you are encouraged to address some or all of the following questions:

    1. Gandhi and Liberation:
    • When Gandhi discusses liberation, does he include women in his vision? How does he address issues of gender and equality?
    1. Gandhi and Race:
    • What are Gandhis views on race, particularly as they relate to his experiences in South Africa? How do these views inform his overall philosophy of justice and equality?
    1. Gandhis Vision for Liberation:
    • Who specifically did Gandhi aim to liberate through his work? How inclusive was his vision?
    1. Gandhis Nonviolence Movement:
    • What are the strengths and limitations of Gandhis nonviolence movement as a whole? How effective was it in achieving his goals, and what criticisms can be made of his strategies or outcomes?

    Expectations and Guidelines:

    • Thesis and Argument: Your essay should present a clear thesis statement that outlines your central argument or perspective on Gandhi as portrayed in his autobiography. Develop your argument with critical analysis and examples.
    • Use of Course Materials: You must engage directly with An Autobiography and incorporate additional relevant course readings or materials to support your analysis.
    • Citation Requirements: Properly cite all sources using a recognized academic citation style (e.g., MLA, APA, or Chicago). Include in-text citations and a bibliography at the end of your essay.
    • Critical Reflection: While this assignment allows for personal reflection, ensure that your observations are grounded in evidence from the text and course discussions. Avoid overly general statements or unsupported claims.

Your essay will be graded based on the following:

    1. Thesis and Argument Development (30%):
    • Is there a clear thesis?
