  • Choosing to Go to College

Reflection: Choosing to Go to College

Write a personal reflection (250 words) about what you were doing before you decided to go to college and why you made that decision.

    Task:

    Write a draft that describes:

    • What you were doing (work, family responsibilities, gap year, travel, hobbies, job, etc.) before deciding to attend college
    • The reasons, influences, and feelings that led you to choose college (goals, role models, career plans, practical needs, or a change in perspective).

    Grading:

    • Commas: Use commas in lists, after introductory phrases, with nonessential clauses, and before coordinating conjunctions joining independent clauses.
    • Apostrophes: Use apostrophes for contractions (e.g., didn’t) and possessives (e.g., my sister’s advice); do not use apostrophes for plurals.

  • week 5 skill building

After reviewing my Week 4 response paper, I believe one of the strongest parts of my essay was my thesis and how consistently I supported it. My argument clearly showed Alices midnight run as a moment of feminist autonomy rather than a simple emotional breakdown. Although I am proud of my essay overall, I see there are areas I can improve. I repeated similar phrases when discussing gender expectations. There were moments when I may have allowed a brain worm of over-explaining cultural context instead of digging deeper into layered symbolism. Reflecting on this paper has helped me see that strong writing requires not only a clear argument but also a deeper connection with symbolism and theory. In the future I want to focus on making every paragraph not only support my thesis but also deepen it with more analysis. I have not used the free tutoring service yet. I have relied on my own revision process. After earning a strong grade and reviewing feedback, tutoring could help me refine my writing, especially as I prepare for the final research paper. I plan to take full advantage of the free tutoring service to help strengthen my argument development and polish my writing.

    Topic:

Katherine Mansfields Miss Brill and Ray Bradburys The Pedestrian through the lens of Psychoanalytic Criticism.

    Research Question:

How do Miss Brill and The Pedestrian show imagination as a defense against emotional rejection, and how does that same defense trap the protagonists in deeper isolation?

    Thesis Statement:

Through the lens of Psychoanalytic Criticism, in Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield and The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, the protagonists rely on imagination as a defense that protects them from emotional rejection, yet this self-created fantasy strengthens repression and deepens their long-term psychological isolation.

  • Week 6: Critical Reading Response: Presenting Arguments to M…

Week 6: Critical Reading Response: Presenting Arguments to Move Audiences Discussion Across the history of argument, rhetoricians have adopted threshold concepts of argument construction (i.e. at the base: claims, evidence, counterclaims) but the presentation of these core argument structures has been nothing short of an art that has taken on many shapes and presentations throughout history. Our ancient rhetors beginning with Cicero held the belief that all rhetoric follows five canons including: invention, arrangement, style, memory, and deliverythis week we are focusing on arrangement and how the structure of our argument changes the message and reception. Chapter 15 will continue to reinforce how aspects of style and structure help move arguments along and strengthen your rhetorical effectiveness when communicating ideas to a variety of audiences. Whether the classical structure of argument, Rogerian Invention, or Toulmins Presentation appeals most, you will gain practice in different ways to present and rearrange arguments to move your audience. As you compose this weeks CRR, consider how you present arguments and respond to counterclaimswhat surprised you this week through this deep dive into arrangement and structure? Instructions After reading the assigned texts, your response should be approached in one of the following ways: 1. Reading with/Reading Against: Read with each text, summarizing the key ideas. Then, talk back to the ideas, locating potential gaps or how these ideas might be reconsidered or implemented in various settings. 2. Impact on your own writing: Think of what impact the ideas or concepts in a particular article/chapter/essay may have on the teaching of writing or on writing more generallyin and out of your discipline. Explain as clearly as possible how this impact might occur. You might also talk about the problems and/or possibilities this concept or idea creates for the teacher/student/practitioner. You should reflect, at least a little, on how your own experience(s) in classrooms and courses rub against the concept(s) or idea(s) to which you are responding. 3. Synthesis: Looking at the texts you read for the week, attempt to synthesize a concept or idea that you noticed moving through the texts. Your goal should be to highlight the idea or concept as the writers understand it and then explain how you see these concepts connecting or disconnecting in a productive way. You might also use these syntheses in future projects. You may want to include key definitions and terms to help you on future projects. Every discussion post must include a question you want the class to address that goes beyond reading comprehension (i.e. we want conversations started not merely yes/no or shallow questions). The expectation is that you engage deeply with the assigned readings and draw explicit connections between your CRR and the readings. Guidelines Type or paste your reading response directly into the submission text area You do not need to include an MLA Works Cited entry but do follow MLA format to cite any sentences with direct examples or quotations you reference from the reading. The initial post (worth 5 points) is due Tuesday by 11:59 p.m. Your responses to your writing group members (worth 5 points) are due Thursday by 11:59 p.m. Post Requirements Original Title of Discussion post. Walker WK1 DQ Answer is not original. Try and think outside of the box and pull something unique and individual from our weekly assigned readings. Initial Response must be 350 words in length Peer responses should be 200 words in length
