  • How Smartphones hijacked our minds

    Assignment Description

Create an annotation or abstract of An annotation is not an essay. It is, for our purposes, a summary of the work that you might be using in the first essay. It is one of the ways to try out some of the skills that you’ll be using in the essay in a way that is low stakes. You can use anything from the annotation in your actual essay.

    Requirements

Your annotation should be 250-300 words and should include the following:

    1. MLA works cited entry. You can use the to get you started or for the explanation. You are not creating a separate Works Cited page for the annotation, though. Use the formatting from the Sample.
    2. Summary of the essay including
    3. the main and supporting points of the essay,
    4. at least 2 properly cited quotes, (Chapter 3 and the )
    5. paraphrase, and
    6. analysis of how the points were made.

    Some things to note –

    • This is not an essay. This is an annotation, so you don’t get an opinion in this type of writing. Try to keep to the summary.
    • This is a pretty narrow range of words. I’ve already taken into account a heading and all of the extra little things in the assignment, so just use the word count tool in whatever program you are using. Keep in mind that Google always says you have a few more words than you really do
  • New Media or Intelligence Hijack

If an essay doesn’t meet these requirements, the best grade it can get is a 50/100.

Pre-writing for Paper 1: fact and opinion, isolating verbal from visual / aural rhetoric.

Paper 1 draft due via Canvas 2/18; conduct peer editing

Paper 1 final draft due 2/22 via Canvas, 11:59pm

This is the paper in which you will be analyzing the Travis Wilkerson documentary, Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun.

Here is the prompt, which is posted on Canvas:

This paper involves responding critically to the film Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun? In the film, Travis Wilkerson describes his research into his own family history and how it intersects with the broader history of the American South.

In this paper, please identify one example of how Wilkersons personal stake in the project permits him to see or discover some element of the inquiry that a more objective investigator might have missed or ignored. Then, if you can, identify an aspect of the investigation that may have been more successfully examined by an investigator who was less personally invested that Wilkerson.

In both cases, you must communicate the facts as presented in the film; your understanding of how Wilkerson uses those facts; and how those facts impact his overall argument.

Your paper may include aspects of your own opinion. But it is more important that you point to concrete evidence as presented in the film.

Your paper should be 3-5 pp in length. Double-spaced, 1 margins. 12-point font.

A few additional words about this assignment:

    1) This first assignment is an extension of the final analytical paper you presumably wrote at the end of ENG 1301. The purpose here is to make a claim (or two related claims), and defend them with concrete evidence from the film.

    2) This assignment is partly diagnostic. It allows me to see what skills we need to work on improving, and what skills we can expand on. So I am more interested in your process than in the product, per se.

    3) This paper will also permit me to identify your own strengths and weaknesses, so I can help you improve before going forward. I tend to mark this paper more extensively than the later papers / projects, so that you can see what you need to improve on. But that heavy marking does not necessarily translate to a bad grade. It is just to help you see what you should focus on.

    4) This is also our first peer editing paper, where you will read and comment on each other’s papers. This will help you understand what your goals should be in your own paper, and help you see what I am looking for as well. Peer review is helpful because you can often see things in your peers’ papers that I would not necessarily see in the same way.

  • Sorrows of the Young Werther

The Sorrows of Young Werther is much more than simply the story of a tragic unrequited love. As Goethe commented in a letter to a friend and biographer years later:

The much-talked-of Age of Werther…belongs in truth…to the course through life of every individual who, born with a sense of freedom and naturalness, must find his place and learn to accommodate himself in the constraining structures of an outdated world. (qtd. in Introduction, Wether, xxii-xxiii)

Werther is primarily about the tensions between freedom and constraint that people face in modern society: In writing The Sorrows of Young Werther, Goethe wanted to liberate his readers. If he wanted to liberate people, what/whom did he wish to liberate them from? How does he attempt to do this in The Sorrows of Young Werther?

    • In formulating your thesis/argument, you may wish to consider the examples of constraints placed on various characters on the novel, the ways that they impinge upon ones individual liberty, and what alternatives might be suggested. Demonstrate your understanding of the assigned text (Werther)

  • Argumentative Essay

ASSIGNMENT: Write a 4-6 page (approximately 1000-1500 words) argumentative essay arguing one side or stance of an academically appropriate debate using the classical model supported by evidence and research. If the writing exceeds the 1500 word maximum, it will be returned back for revision.

    A. Directions

    Step 1. Choose a Topic

Today, there are many different debates being had all around the world about topics that affect our personal, professional, civic, and/or academic lives. Some of these debates have been such hot topics for so long that it has become very difficult to add to the conversation with new and original ideas or stances to take. To move beyond this trend, we have created a list of topics that may not be written about for this Touchstone. This includes example topics that are used in Unit 4. Feel free to access a tutor if you would like support choosing a topic for this essay.

    • Universal Healthcare
    • Vaccines

Choosing to write about any of the above topics will result in returned Touchstone for a single chance to resubmit.

Step 2. Write an Argumentative Essay

Remember the word argument does not mean a fight in a writing context. An academic argument is more like a thoughtful conversation between two people with differing viewpoints on a debatable issue. However, you are required to take a position on one side of a debatable issue that is informed by academically appropriate evidence.

For the purposes of this assignment, expressing or relying on your personal opinion of a debate is discouraged. Rather, the essay must argue one side or stance of the debate using the rhetorical appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos) and be supported by academic or scholarly sources. These include physical sources in public libraries, digital sources in academic libraries, online sources (excludes unreliable sources like procon.org and wikipedia.org, which are discouraged), and published expert reports, preferably peer-reviewed by experts in the field to maintain utmost credibility. Consider revisiting the tutorial for more information on appropriate sources for argumentative writing.

Your submission must include an APA style in-text citations and a reference page following the essay. In your research, you will need at least 2 and no more than 4 credible primary or secondary sources to use as support in your essay.

    • All sources cited in the writing submitted must be locatable by a grader; include hyperlinks to the sources in the reference page.
    • The use of any source that requires payment for access is strictly prohibited for this assignment.
    • Avoid using sources that exceed 20 pages in length, as they may be overly extensive for the purposes of this assignment.
    • Including more than four sources may cause delays, and you might be asked to provide additional evidence of the credibility for each source.

Thia will be helpful to you as you work on this assignment.

Step 3. Think About Your Writing

On a separate page, below your reference page, include thoughtful answers to the Think About Your Writing questions. References and Think About Your Writing questions are NOT included in the word count for this essay.

Below your reference page, include answers to all of the following reflection questions.

    1. What have you learned about how to present a strong argument? How could/will you apply this knowledge in your professional or everyday life (3-4 sentences)? Sophia says: Think about the specific skills and techniques that you used while developing and writing your essay. What tools will you take with you from this experience?
    2. Consider the English Composition I course as a whole. What have you learned about yourself as a writer (5-6 sentences)? Sophia says: What did you learn that surprised you? Is there anything that you have struggled with in the past that you now feel more confident about?

Step 4. Review Rubric and Checklist

Your composition and reflection will be scored according to the Touchstone 4 Rubric, which evaluates the argumentative topic and thesis statement, argument development and support, organization, flow, research, style, use of conventions (grammar, punctuation, etc.), and your answers to the Think About your Writing questions above.
