The yellow wallpaper analysis
This is assignment will mirror the Rhetorical Analysis essay from ENG 101. However, instead of analyzing rhetorical elements, we will analyze the literary elements. In a 700 800 word essay, present an argument/thesis about one of the short stories by performing a close-reading. A close reading is making observations about the language, structure, techniques, and patterns of small passages in a work, creating interpretations about those observations, and then connecting your interpretation back to the larger work. Essentially you will be answering the following questions: What are some important passages in the short story? What do these passage mean? Why is it important to the rest of the short story? It is recommended that you analyze at least 3 passages (Ranging from 3 sentences to the whole paragraph) from the text, though more is encouraged. Instead of looking for rhetorical elements like Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, look for how the author uses elements like: Sentence structure/style Patterns/repeating words Imagery Metaphors or similes Tone The following works are recommended for analysis: Young Goodman Brown by Nathanel Hawthrone (pg 157 168) The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe (pg 169 174) The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (pg 183 196) Everyday Use by Alice Walker (pg 418 425) HOWEVER, you are allowed to use any work from our textbook, or even another short story of your choice, AS LONG AS YOU GET MY APPROVAL. Whichever work you choose, make sure it is a short story, and no other genre Please follow a basic essay structure: Introduction with a thesis statement Body paragraphs with main points Conclusion that summarizes findings. MLA formatting Header Page number Title with center alignment Indented paragraphs ***Parenthetical citations Double spacing 12pt font Appropriate font ***Work cited page Hanging indent for citations ***Essays that do not contain these elements are automatically placed in the F range (59 and below). Reminder: AI in any capacity, whether it for citation, editing, or content, is prohibited. The essay will be graded on the following five criteria: Audience 20 points Does the essay follow academic standards and conventions? Does the essay have a thesis statement? Is this appropriate for an academic audience? Argument 20 points Does the essay have persuasive arguments? Are quotes properly cited in MLA format?
