  • week 4 discussion ethics

Animal research is a necessary practice in the world of medical research, allowing scientists to develop life-saving interventions and to spot catastrophic problems before new techniques or products make their way to actual patients. However, this does not mean that we should deny that there are serious ethical issues involved.

Animal testing is not a pretty or pleasant process. It causes pain and suffering to animal subjects, and legitimate cases of abuse have been uncovered by animal rights groups. Consequently, the practice should be tightly regulated, and alternative methods should be employed whenever possible.

    • Discuss a specific research study involving animals that had ethical issues.
    • What were the ethical issues involved?
    • How would Act utilitarianism view the research study you chose ? (Remember JS Mill advocated that animals suffered)
    • What could have been done to conduct the research study differently to avoid these ethical issues?
  • Week 4 English Comp Final Draft

Upload the final draft here for essay 1. Make the changes identified in the rough draft feedback when writing the final draft. Remember that final drafts submitted without the changes mentioned in the rough draft feedback will result in a zero.
  • Short paper

A draft of the short paper is due this week. Please make it as complete as possible. That means that it is as close to four full pages as possible, uses standard paper formatting (margins and font), in-text citations, and a Works Cited. Students should use MLA Style in-text citations and the Works Cited. (In-text citations together with the Works Cited are both required to give appropriate credit to sources and avoid plagiarism.) Please see the outlines for a Baca Paper and a Truth Paper. Our assignment is slightly different. Instead of focusing on four poems by Baca or three speeches by Truth, you are doing a close reading of a text–focusing on a theme in either 12 Angry Men or a theme in Are Prisons Obsolete? Make sure you send your draft as either a .doc or a .docx file. Do not send a pdf. Please carefully read “More on Paper Formatting for College Papers.” Improperly formatted papers will not be read. Short Paper: This is a close reading of the text with a thesis or argument on the theme in the text selected (Reginald Rose’s 12 Angry Men or Angela Davis’ Are Prisons Obsolete?). It is not a research paper. Your evidence to support your thesis should come from quotes and paraphrased and/or summarized material from the The final Short Paper should be a typed, double-spaced paper of a minimum of four pages in length. (Four full pages required or about 1,500 words.) (MLA Style with in-text citations and a Works Cited; the Works Cited must be in addition to 4 pages of student text; please number the pages.) Correct citation and bibliographic format required. Standard margins and 12 point font (Times New Roman preferred) are expected. The paper should present an introduction with a summary of the novel, a thesis, and statement of the main points/examples. A brief (of about 15-20 sentences) summary of the life of person whose Narrative you selected should be included. The paper should use quotes and paraphrases/ summaries of significant things from the text to support student statements. The final polished version of the paper is due next week. Plagiarism or cheating on this assignment can result in automatic course failure. Review the course learning outcomes for English 102 (below) and syllabus on plagiarism. The short paper must be an attached document. I will not be accepted as an assignment cut and pasted into a textbox. It must have page numbers and proper paper formatting. CCP offers Office 365 to students which includes Word (see this information on the syllabus).
  • Bassam using music

    Using Music in Everyday Life

One of way of thinking about popular music is as a “technology of self:” we use music to represent ourselves and to change how we feel. Think about where, when, and with who you use specific types of music and describe it here.

For example: I was big fan of grunge music during the 1990s. My interest went beyond listening to the band, and extended into going to see live shows, learning the songs, and traveling to see multiple shows in a road. I adopted a sort of “grungy” attitude in terms of how I dressed, and how I played my own music. I used the music to identify myself to others. Now, I’m much more likely to discuss those songs from a cultural perspective and their relevance to 1990s youth.

    Example 1

The main place I listen to music nowadays is while I am exercising, and typically the music I will listen to is pop (I literally use Spotify’s workout beats playlist), or I will listen to pop punk. I would also listen to instrumental music when I am working. typically the Hardspace Shipbreakers soundtrack, which is “space cowboy music” according to Google. Other than that, I would just listen to pop punk or rock when I just want to chill at my computer and not play video games.

    Example 2

My favorite genre of music is Reggae. I grew up listening to Reggae with my family, and it always seems to brighten my mood. I find myself listening to music almost all times of the day, and I feel confident saying that Reggae is a part of my lifestyle; all the people I hang around know exactly what I am going to play if we are hanging out. I think that the vibe Reggae music brings fits all occasions, and the lyrics are often times powerful and refer to real-world issues and solutions. Watching Reggae bands perform live has also been something my brother and I enjoy doing. I love to see all the unique instruments and sounds that go into creating a good song.

    Example 3

Music has always been part of my everyday routine, and I use it mostly to control my mood and focus. When I wake up in the morning or get ready for school, I usually play calm or soft music. It helps me feel relaxed and start the day without stress. When Im studying or doing homework, I prefer instrumental music or quiet background songs because lyrics can distract me. The music makes it easier to concentrate and keeps me motivated to finish my work.

With friends or family, I listen to more upbeat and popular songs. In the car or during gatherings, music becomes something social we share songs, sing together, and it helps conversations feel more comfortable. Its also a way to show personality; the songs I choose say a lot about my taste and culture.

I also use music to change how I feel. If Im tired or unmotivated, I play energetic music to wake myself up. If I feel stressed, I switch to slower songs to calm down. So for me, music works like a tool not just entertainment, but something that helps me manage emotions, connect with others, and stay focused in daily life.
