The central message is that our words are powerful, and we never know when our words are the last ones a person will hear from us.

You can also read the scenarios below and use your knowledge of personality type to suggest ways to improve the communication. You can comment on one or more of the scenarios. Remember to think about personality type and how it influences communication as you write your comments.

    Scenario 1 (E and I):

Mary and Carol are roommates and are discussing paying bills for the apartment that they share. Mary is upset because Carol paid the phone bill late. The more that Mary talks, the quieter Carol becomes. This causes Mary to become even more upset. Mary starts talking in a loud voice and Carol leaves the room. How can they improve communication?

    Scenario 2 (S and N):

A sensing type and an intuitive type are on a first date. What is each likely to talk about?

    Scenario 3 (T and F):
Rachel and Jim have been married about a year. Rachel complains to Jim that he never says, “I love you” anymore. Jim replies that he would not have married Rachel if he didn’t love her. How can they improve communication?

    Scenario 4 (J and P):

    Week 5 Discussion, Thinking Critically

    No unread replies.No replies.

For this discussion, please comment on this topic:

Give an example of a fallacy in reasoning from commercials, politics, or your own personal life. Then read another student post and make a brief comment on it.

Here are just a couple of recent examples of fallacies in reasoning in politics: all refugees are terrorists; all Mexicans are taking our jobs.

Read other students’ comments and respond to them or provide encouragement.

    Example 1

Fallacy in todays commercials is everywhere. Not just commercials, but social media and trends, as well as all of the influencers! For products, views, interactions, any possible clout and especially for the money. It is a huge trend now a days to buy a marketed product from a famous celebrity that promotes it. Need it, want it, FOMO, anything to be apart of the fad . Ignoring the real results an action needed to get those, Real scientific facts, feelings, varied results per group, and being persuaded under false cause.

    Example 2

An example of a fallacy in reasoning from commercials is the bandwagon fallacy. This happens when a company tries to convince people to buy something by saying that everyone else is doing it.

For example, a sneaker commercial might say, Millions of people are switching to our shoesdont get left behind! The message suggests that because many people are buying the shoes, they must be the best choice. However, just because something is popular does not automatically mean it is better or higher quality. The advertisement is using popularity instead of real evidence about comfort, durability, or performance.

This is a fallacy because it pressures people to follow the crowd rather than think critically about whether the product is actually good for them.

    Example 3

A major recent political fallacy is the notion that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs are designed to disadvantage white people and prop up “unqualified” groups. The reality is that these DEI programs were drafted by organizations to be compliant with Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Title VII guarantees employment protections to citizens from workplace discrimination based on race, gender, religion, sexual identity, and disability status. Pay close attention to how DEI is used in political discourse, particularly by Conservative politicians, it’s more often than not being used as a disparaging slur to imply that an ethnic minority only has their job because of preferential treatment towards their identity. When the reality is the opposite, they likely would have never been allowed to progress up the career ladder if corporations and institutions were allowed to continue selectively culling people from their pool of applicants based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or ability status. DEI policies were designed to target elements of systemic and structural discrimination in society.

    ASSIGNMENT 1

    Overview & Directions

To support your Mini Lecture Presentation Project, you will create a typed preparation outline worth 25 points. Your outline should help organize your ideas and demonstrate a clear structure for your upcoming video presentation. The outline must include a strong introduction, 2 to 3 clearly developed main points with supporting details (3 course concepts, 2 references to credible outside sources (peer review studies/ statistics), a pop culture reference, , and a conclusion. Your introduction should include an attention getter, a thesis statement, and a preview of your main points. Your conclusion should review your main points and end with a concluding thought or a reason to remember.

In addition, you must cite at least 3 course concepts and 2 credible outside sources using APA format. A References page in APA format should be included at the end of your outline.

Please make sure you review the Mini Lecture Presentation Project Overview before beginning your outline as this is where the specific content requirements of the project are discussed.

You can find the rubric attached to this assignment or under files on Canvas. There is also an outline template under files on Canvas. Please be sure to use the outline template to guide the organization of your presentation outline.

    Mini Lecture Project Presentation

    Mini Lecture Presentation Project

    Purpose & Goal of Presentation:

To educate others about interpersonal communication via a video presentation (5 to 7 minutes).

The goal of this project is to take things you have learned and be able to teach them to others. Think of yourself as a teacher for this project. You are responsible for teaching three key concepts to an audience of your choice. It is important that you define the concepts, as well as provide examples, including examples from outside the textbook. A visual aid (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.- please refer to the visuals aids lecture on Canvas) is required. Additionally, you will be evaluated on your public speaking skills as part of your overall grade (please refer to the speech delivery lectures on Canvas)

    Guiding Prompts for Presentation/ Requirements

Below are a few prompts to consider while planning your presentation:
    1. Who is the target audience for the lesson? (Peers? Friends? Family? Kids? Colleagues? Industry-specific?). You will want to decide this early on as you will want to tailor your presentation to this particular audience. For example- if you were to focus on conflict resolution for your project, your presentation would likely be different if you were to give it to elementary school teachers with the goal of teaching them how to resolve conflict amongst students vs. focusing on delivering the presentation to college students regarding how to resolve conflict when it arises in group projects.
    2. What is the goal? What do you want them to learn? Focus on a specific aspect of Interpersonal communication. While you are focusing on a specific aspect, it is ok if you touch on other aspects as well (example: your main focus is how your self concept plays a role in your relationships, but you also touch on how culture influences your self concept).
    3. Use the textbook to define your key concepts.
    – Include outside examples, statistics, or studies
    – Provide at least 3 course concepts and 2 outside sources (studies/ statistics about your topic)
    4. Include a brief pop culture example (TikTok, tweet, TV/movie clip, etc.)
    5. Explain how the concepts will improve your audiences lives. Make sure you make it relevant to your particular audience.
    6. Structure your presentation with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion
    – Introduction: Attention getter, thesis statement, and preview
    – Conclusion: Summary and final thought

    1. The presentation is worth 150 points. Please see the rubric attached to this assignment or look to the Mini Lecture Project Presentation Folder under “Files” on Canvas.

    W7 Video Discussion Strange Situation

Infants seek social bonds, which they develop with one or several people as long as the caregivers are responsive and familiar. In the early months, synchrony begins: infants and caregiver interact face to face, making split-second adjustments in their emotional responses to each other. The still-face situation mentioned in the book reveals the importance of facial expression to infants.

Early responsiveness evolves into attachment, an emotional bond that encourages toddlers to explore. Secure attachment allows learning to progress; insecure infants are less confident and may develop emotional impairments. As infants become more curious and as they encounter new toys, people, and events, they use social referencing to learn whether such new things are fearsome or fun.

Although mothers are infants usual, and most social partners, the emotional connections evident in synchrony, attachment, and social referencing, can also occur with fathers, other relatives, and day-care providers. Instead of harming infants, as was once feared, non-maternal care can enhance infants psychosocial development.

Mary Ainsworth developed an experimental procedure know as the Strange Situation. She did this to observe the variety of attachment forms that are exhibited between infants and their primary caregiver (for the purposes of this discussion I’m going to refer to the primary caregiver as the mother).

The Strange Situation demonstrates different attachment styles which are based on the interaction behaviors directed towards the mother when she returns to the room after leaving the infant alone with someone the infant does not know. There are 4 things that the researchers wanted to pay attention to when observing the baby’s behavior: These are not the discussion questions, these are the 4 things that the researchers were looking at and things for you to watch for in the video.

    1. Does the baby seek out the mother when she returns and want to be near her
    2. Does the baby maintain contact with the mother after she returns
    3. Does the baby avoid the mother and avoid contact with her
    4. Was the baby resistant to contact and comforting by the mother

In this video we will observe a baby’s response when the mother returns to the room. Pay attention to the child’s level of separation anxiety, her stranger anxiety, and her behavior when mom returns to the room. The child’s behavior will give us many clues about the level of attachment this child has with her mother.

Mary Ainsworth originally identified 3 types of attachment styles from her research, Secure attachment, Insecure Avoidant attachment, and Insecure ambivalent or resistant attachment. Several years later Disorganized attachment was added to the list.

Secure attachmentSecure children feel confident that their mother will be available to meet their needs. They use her as a safe base to explore the environment and seek her comfort in times of distress (Main, & Cassidy, 1988).

Insecure Avoidantinsecure avoidant children do not focus on their mother when exploring a new environment. They are very independent of mom, both physically and emotionally. They do not seek her out when distressed.

Insecure Ambivalent/Resistantthe infant has an ambivalent behavioral style towards their mother. They may have clingy and dependent behavior, but they might also reject the mother when she tries to interact with the infant.

Watch this Strange Situation Video linked below, and record your thoughts on what you watched, what type of attachment does this baby exhibit? What makes you think that? HINT: Pay close attention to what happens when mom leaves the room and what happens when she returns.

Please expand this discussion by responding to as least one of your classmates by comparing their response to your own. You may use the text or the video to support your response. This week I will probably not be commenting on your individual discussions but please look for my feedback on your written assignment that was due at the end of week 6.
