Weekly Assignments will appear differently each week. Sometimes I will want a picture you drew, a poem you wrote, a meme you made regarding the weeks topic. For this week, please feel free to be a little creative, and imagine the following:
You are an alchemist in the 14th century. Using the scholastic method, how would you try to create the Philosophers Stone (red goo that can make base metals like lead into gold, granting immortality, and curing all illnesses)?
Remember, the Scholastic Method consists of:
- Quaestio (The Question): the topic is narrowed down to a precise question.
- Disputatio (Disputation): scholars cite authoritative texts, identify contradictions, and debate arguments.
- Sententia (Conclusion): a synthesis of the arguments to provide a solution, showing why some arguments from the Disputation were rejected and why the Conclusion is correct.

English Question
After having learned about how to identify and use arguments and how to synthesize diverse perspectives, it is now time for you to apply the knowledge. In this assignment, you will write a five-paragraphargumentative essay based on one of the three topics provided below. Pay attention when developing your arguments and counterarguments; each body paragraph must be well-developed and be 12-16 lines long.
Please note that each topic comes with an article that you need to read beforehand. Somewhere in your essay, you need to cite the accompanying article at least once; if you wish, you can cite also other articles, but this one is a must. The article assigned to the topic should not be analyzed as a primary source but should only serve as supporting evidence either for one of your arguments or counterarguments. The accompanying articles are attached to this assignment, and they also provide a direct link for the article itself. Please do not quote; instead, you should paraphrase.
In this essay, you need to cite at least one external source in your arguments and at least another external source in your counterargument. Therefore, you need to have at least two external sources.
Please note that you must submit this essay as a Word document, and it has to follow proper APA format and structure. Click to see a sample.
In addition, before writing your essay, please go over the argumentative essay template attached .
Note: Plagiarism is not tolerated; TurnItIn will be activated to avoid plagiarism.
Argumentative Essay Topics:
1.
According to certain activists, one way of improving diversity in the workplace is through Affirmative Action measures. Yet California, a traditionally liberal state, rejected Affirmative Action on their November 2020 ballots. Why might a Democratic supermajority state reject this solution to diversity issues? Investigate the problem related to increasing diversity and opportunity to people of all races and ethnicities, and then write an argumentative essay where you propose what you consider to be the best solution, whether it is Affirmative Action or some other solution, to help solve this problem long term.
Read the article titled Beyond the Pale. Race in Silicon Valley.
2.
In 2020, Black Lives Matter was both a hashtag and an organization; both the hashtag and the organization were particularly visible during the protests after George Floyds death during the summer of 2020. Some people willingly use the hashtag and support the organization. It is often stated that all lives cannot matter until Black lives matter. But others support the idea behind the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter while eschewing any relationship with the organization itself based on accusations of political extremism. Why would this organization appear extremist to some, causing them to reject its mission? Is this just a reflection of peoples dislike of the chaos created by the Floyd protests and riots (93% of which were considered peaceful according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project at acleddata.com)? Or is it a symptom of deeper, implicit biases? Is there some legitimacy to the claims of extremism for the Black Lives Matter group? Consider a strategy to improve understanding of the Black Lives Matter movement, both including the formal organization and the idea, and the best way to decrease any potential biases against Black people. Where would you start? Write an essay argumentative defending your strategy.
Read the article titled Lawns, softball, bourbon and privilege.
3.
Choose an artifact that is specific to a particular culture, religion, or other group (like the hijab) and write an analysis of it. Describe the item, what it looks like, who wears or uses it, and why people of a particular group wear or use it. You may want to include a personal story of your own encounters with this artifact or images of it in your analysis, if appropriate. Investigate different ways that people interpret and react to this artifact, as well as ways that views on this artifact may have evolved in recent times. Write an argumentative essay where you argue about peoples different views of this artifact.

- What 23 specific strategies discussed in the Week 7 lesson did you use in your posting and why?
- How has a real business used these strategies in one of its social media messages? Share the social media message and discuss how it used those same 23 strategies.
Thread 2: Podcasts
As a presenter next week, you have been asked to help promote the conference through the podcast series on your company’s website. Before Thursday midnight, post a 2- to 6-minute about the topic of your Week 8 presentation.
To be courteous to all, including those who may be unable to hear the podcast, the recording must use captions OR a text transcript must be included. (The average speaking time is 100150 words per minute, so the transcript of a 2- to 6-minute podcast would be 200900 words.) For a concise and clear recording, preparing a transcript in advance helps!
Use this podcast as a “rough draft” or overview of the presentation you will create for next week, since that presentation also requires audio.

- Discuss the development of your visual by answering the following questions:
- What source(s), if any, did you use to collect the information to be presented in the visual? Why is this information necessary to support the ideas of your presentation? (Cite the visual as explained in in the Week 7 lesson.)
- Why does the information need to be presented in a visual form? (For instance, why not just present the idea in text?)
- Why is the type of visual you used appropriate for the content? (For instance, why did you choose a bar chart and not a line chart?)
- What strategies did you use in your visual? (For instance, how did you employ ?)
Peer Reply Guidance:
Before Sunday midnight, respond to at least two other classmates in any of the threads by addressing two or more of the following questions relevant to each thread.
Thread 1: Social Media
Do you agree or disagree that the platform used is best for the purpose and audience of the message? What additional social media strategies might accomplish the same purpose for the audience? What additional examples from the real world demonstrate the social media strategies used? What are the pros/cons of social media advertising for professional purposes, such as this communications conference?
Thread 2: Podcasts
Which section(s) of the podcast stood out to you the most and why? Which ideas from the podcast should be removed or expanded upon for the Week 8 presentation? Which additional ideas relevant to the podcast topic should be addressed in the Week 8 presentation?
Thread 3: Blogs
Do you think the blog should be submitted for publication? What additions or revisions, if any, would you suggest before submitting for publication? Which ideas from the blog should be removed or expanded upon for the Week 8 presentation? What additional ideas relevant to the blog topic should be addressed in the Week 8 presentation?
Thread 4: Visual Aids
Is the visual really necessary, or would the content be better presented textually and why? Is the type of visual used appropriate for the content, or would a different type of visual be better and why? If research is used, is the visual properly cited in APA style? What design changes, if any, would you suggest?
