  • The Commentary Paper Project Description and First Draft

The large purpose of this project is to respond to the ideas about the future of AI which you encoutered in the article your summarized in the first paper. IMPORTANT: your task is not to respond to the issue of AI in general, but rather to the ideas found in that specific article. This means that you wil have srick closely to responding to the contents of that text, not to the issue in general. The purpose of this project is to extend the conversation about the future of AI by adding your voice to the conversartion started by others. You should also assume that they have not read the article about AI you read and summarized in the previous paper. A brief summary of the text (I suggest not just taking your summary from the previous module because it is long, but writing a brief new one)

    • Some kind of support and/or justification of your statement. No need to do extensive external research; this can come from your own experiences/thoughts.
    • At least one “contribution to the conversation” using the Yes/No/Maybe structure we learned about.
    • An explicit explanation of the importance of having this conversation now (so what/who cares)

    1. Stress affects cognitive functioning and mental performance

Picciotto and Fabio (2024) analyze the effect of stress on cognitive performance, and the willingness people have to engage in cognitively demanding tasks. The results found in this study are that stress can reduce cognitive performance and increase the likelihood of avoiding tasks that require mental effort.

The American Psychological Association (2023) discusses that stress affects the brain and nervous system, which can lead to problems with concentration and memory between the HPA axis and the immune system as well as long-term draining to the body.

Both sources indicate that stress can negatively affect cognitive processes and mental functioning.

    2. Stress produces physical and emotional responses in the body

The American Psychological Association (2023) discussed that stress initiates the body to respond to stress by releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline that eventually chronic stress can affect the heart, immune system, and nervous system.

Delussi et al. (2024) discusses how stress influences emotional perception and as its linked to neurological condition such as migraines, demonstrating that stress can contribute to both emotional and physical symptoms.

Agreement: Both sources indicate that stress affects the body both physically and emotionally.

    3. Stress affects emotional processing and behavior

Delussi et al. (2024) found in their study that stress influences emotional perception and that stress factors can vary by gender, particularly among individuals with migraines.

Picciotto and Fabio (2024) found in their study that stress affects behavior by increasing the possibility for an individual to avoid cognitive tasks.

Disagree: Delussi et al. found through the online questionnaires and additional study that stress can affect the emotional perception based on gender differences and patients with migraines, while Picciotto and Fabio emphasize the effect of stress on decision-making related to cognitive effort.

Suggestion: It might also be helpful to look into studies on how stress affects sleep cycles. For example, Kalmbach, Anderson, and Drake (2018) discusses how stress can increase sleep reactivity, meaning some peoples sleep systems are more sensitive to stress and can develop insomnia or circadian disruptions as a result. Overall, I’m really excited to read your essay and what stress reducing mechanisms come out from your research!

  • IMRad Essay

I have uploaded an example and guide line to follow. The Eng 112 is the data gathered from the survey and all the responses. Below is the some of the other knowledge you need.

    Target Audience

The target audience for this survey consists of my personal friends and family members who are young adults aged 18-30. I chose this demographic because they are generally interested in ethical and moral questions, and they are comfortable sharing their opinions openly. This age group is also likely to reflect a range of perspectives on moral dilemmas, making their responses valuable for understanding how young adults think about issues of right and wrong. I believe that they tend to answer surveys honestly which will provide me with insights into their moral reasoning.

    Hypothesis

Based on previous research and my informal conversations, I hypothesize that most respondents will choose to take actions that save the greatest number of lives, such as pulling a lever to divert a train and save five people at the cost of harming one. However, I expect some individuals to express moral reservations about intentionally causing harm, leading them to choose against pulling the lever or pushing the large person. I also anticipate that personal morals such as prioritizing saving lives versus avoiding direct harm will influence their responses.

    Survey Questions

The survey has both questions about who you are and questions about moral dilemmas. The questions about who you are ask things like your age and what level of school youre in. These help me understand the answers better and see if age or education affects how people think. The main part of the survey has three well-known trolley problem scenarios, which are stories about tough moral choices. After each story, theres a question asking how okay or right you think the action is, using a scale from 1 to 5. Theres also a space to explain why you made that choice. These questions help me see not just what people decide, but also why they think that way and what morals or ideas they are using to make their decision.

    Mode of Distribution

The survey will be distributed privately on my Snapchat story, which allows me to reach my target audience directly. This mode ensures that all respondents are people I personally know and who fit the age range, increasing the likelihood of honest and thoughtful answers. Using an online platform also makes it easy for participants to complete the survey at their own pace and convenience, which should improve response quality. I chose this distribution method because it is familiar, quick, and ensures a manageable number of responses, aligning with my goal to gather honest insights from my personal network.

    Rationale

The target audience I chose is young adults, like my friends and family, because they are at a stage in life where they often think about moral questions and tough decisions. My hypothesis is based on previous studies that show peoples moral answers are shaped by their personal values and how they reason through problems. I think Ill see this in how they answer the survey. The questions are made to be clear, interesting, and make people think, so theyll honestly share their opinions. Im planning to share the survey on my Snapchat story because its easy and convenient to reach my friends and family directly. This way, I can get responses from people I know and who fit my target group.

    Survey Questions

    Basic Questions About You:

    1. How old are you? 17 or younger, 18-24, 25-30, 31+

    2. What level of school have you finished or are currently in? (High school, college, grad school, other)

    Moral Dilemma Questions (Trolley Problems):

    Scenario 1:

You see 5 people tied to a train track. A train is coming, and you can pull a lever to switch it to another track. On that track, there is 1 person tied up. Do you:

Pull the lever to save 5 people, but hurt 1 person.

Do nothing, and the train will kill 5 people.

    Follow-up:

On a scale of 1 to 5, how okay do you think it is to pull the lever? (1 = Not okay, 5 = Totally okay)

Why did you choose that? (Write your reason)

    Scenario 2:

You are on a bridge and see 5 people tied to the track. A big person is standing next to you. If you push him onto the track, he will stop the train and save the 5 people, but he will be hurt or killed. Do you:

Push the person onto the track to save the 5.

Do nothing, and the train will kill 5 people.

    Follow-up:

On a scale of 1 to 5, how okay is it to push the person? 1 being not okay – 5 being okay

Why did you make that choice? (Write your reason)

    Scenario 3:

You have to choose between two options:

Sacrifice 1 person to save 10 others.

Do nothing, and more people might die.

    Follow-up:

Rate how right or wrong it is to sacrifice one to save ten on a scale of 1 to 5. 1-complently wrong, 5- it was the right thing

Why did you choose that? (Write your reason)
