  • Sodium nitrate in processed meat

Please read or reread the sample student essay concerning Definition titled “Sodium Nitrate in Processed Meat” (Chapter 12.4). Student Amber Imeh has created a scientific and subjective essay with a tone that, at times, can seem esoteric. In this post, please discuss why you think the editors of this book included this as a Definition essay. Could it be used as an example of Exemplification or Description? You can also discuss your opinion concerning the strengths and weaknesses of this piece. Remember that for full points, you need to also react to at least one other person’s thread in at least five sentences.

    research paper outline :

    Research Paper Outline

    Research Question:

Should public colleges and universities be free for students?

    Claim (My argument):

Public colleges should be free because many students cannot afford college, and education

helps people have a better future.

Sub-Claim 1: College is too expensive

Research: U.S. Department of Education (cost, loans, graduation)

    Main points:

College costs a lot of money

    Many students take loans

    2

Some students drop out because they cannot pay

Counterargument: Some people say students should pay for their own college

Rebuttal: Many students work hard but still cannot afford the cost

Sub-Claim 2: Tuition is high because states give less money

    Research: Mitchell, Leachman, and Saenz

    Main points:

States give less funding to colleges

Colleges increase tuition to cover the cost

Counterargument: Some people think colleges spend too much money

    3

Rebuttal: The main reason for high tuition is less government funding

Sub-Claim 3: College helps people get better jobs

Research: Deming and Dynarski (Brookings Institution)

    Main points:

    College graduates earn more money

    They have more job opportunities

Counterargument: Some people succeed without college

Rebuttal: Most good jobs require a college degree

    Concluding Statement:

If public colleges are free, more students can go to school, have less debt, and build a better

    future.

    ESSAY PROMPT 1

    GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

This paper should be between 1,250-2,000+ words in length. Provide a word-count at the end of the paper. Also include a works cited page and provide citations in the text of your essay in accordance with the MLA citation method. Double-space your essay and use 14-point Times New Roman font. Save and submit in Word format.

The paper is due at 11:59 pm on Saturday, March 1, both through the Assignment link and through the Turnitin link on Canvas under modules. Papers will not be graded until they have been submitted in both places. Late essay submissions are allowed for up to 1 week, with a 10-point penalty, and no late submissions are accepted after that. Manage your time accordingly.

    IMPORTANT NOTE

Plagiarism will result in automatic assignment failure.

For reference, please see the following:

AI use is prohibited in this class. Any obvious AI use will result in a lower grade and possible assignment failure without the chance of a re-do. This is a no-forgiveness policy, so act accordingly.

    ESSAY TOPIC

This essay covers the film and novel of Carol (also published as The Price of Salt) and the film and novel of A Single Man. You must discuss at least two of these four works, but you are welcome to discuss three or four of them. I mentioned in the class discussion that you would be required to discuss at least one novel and one film, but I have deleted that requirement. Now you are free to discuss the two films only or the two novels only if you choose.

You may choose if you want to focus in your essay on a thematic analysis regarding one or more of the topics and issues discussed in class that interest you, or you may choose if you want to focus on a formal analysis of these works, or you may want to combine the two approaches.

A thematic analysis of the films and novels might focus on any of the topics and issues that we listed on our class notes (available on Canvas under modules) or you might choose to focus on a theme or issue not listed there that particularly interests you in the works.

A formal analysis of the films might focus on such issues as color use, music use, editing choices or production design (among other things), while a formal analysis of the novel might focus on the relationship between narrator and reader, the use of language, the progression of the plot, character development, and the use of symbols (among other things).

You also might choose to focus your analysis upon the adaptation of the novel(s) into the film(s), considering left out and/or added scenes, changes in character and character emphasis, changes in plot, changes in setting, etc.

Whatever topic and approach you choose, be certain to quote from the novel(s) and/or to describe in detail scenes from the film(s) in making your analysis.
