Why do you think identity-centered storytelling has become more central in contemporary theater? What cultural changes might have influenced this shift? • Writing assignment 1

In the Introductions Forum, you shared a little bit about how you find and share information in your life. For this written assignment, dig a little more deeply and reflect on your information habits as a student and a professional, as well as in your personal life.

In a short reflection essay, respond to the following questions:

    • Where do you start a search for information? Does your searching differ depending on whether your needs are professional, academic, or personal? Explain.
    • Is there a form of information you’re likely to trust at first glance? Either a publication like a newspaper or a format like a scholarly article?
    • Can you think of some voices that aren’t present in that source of information?
    • Where might you look to find some other perspectives?
    • Is there a source you are least likely to trust at first glance? Why?
    • Think about the purpose that drives the creation of different types of information (newspaper articles, explainer videos, etc.). How might the purpose influence the reliability of the information?
    • What was the last thing you researched that you were really excited about? Do you struggle when you are asked to “research something that interests you”? (Instead, try asking yourself, “What makes me really angry?” You might find you have more interests than you realized!)
    • What are three things you hope to get out of this course to improve your information literacy skills?

This essay should be 500 to 1000 words (2 to 4 pages). Be sure to double-space your text and use paragraphing. You should frame the body of your essay with an introduction and conclusion.

  • Current Event and Reflection Paper

    Instructions

This week you will submit your first current event and reflection paper. In it, you will do the following:

    1. Find a current event that focuses on one of the nations we discussed in either week 7 or week 8 of the course. Your news item can be written in any language, as long as there is an equivalent English language translation. (If you are not sure where to start, this website, the Latin American Herald Tribune, out of Caracas, Venezuela, is a good place to start. It focuses on Latin American news, but is written in English. See: )
    2. If you are unsure if your news item is legitimate, you can consult this published by the University of California, Merced.
    3. You are always welcome to consult your instructor at any time for further guidance.

Your paper should be roughly 750 words (about 2 pages) and address the following:

    1. What current event did you choose? Why?
    2. How does it tie in to the countries and topics we have studied over the last two weeks?
    3. How does this current event relate to any of the information you have learned in the course so far? Does it support the information you have learned so far? Or does it refute it? You should be able to cite at least one specific reading and one video clip that is relevant to the current event you are discussing.

The class is Contemporary Latin American Society
