The first section of the research project that you will hand in for a grade will be at least five pages, and use at least five sources. Most if not all of your sources should be scholarly articles (also known as peer-reviewed sources or journal articles). Your paper should use MLA style formatting and documentation (both in-text citation and Work Cited page). Your sources should be appropriately integrated into your discussion using signal phrases and source synthesis. Source usage should comprise an appropriate mix of summary and direct quotation. The sources and draft should be clearly organized around your central research question. You should clearly show what each source you choose can contribute to answering the research question. You should also weigh in on the research question yourself-what do you think is the best answer to your research question, and how does your opinion line up with that of your sources?

you will have several weeks to expand your first draft in length, scope, depth, and source material. The final draft should be at least ten pages and make use of at least ten sources. Again, most if not all of your sources should be scholarly articles (also known as peer-reviewed sources or journal articles). Your paper should use MLA style formatting and documentation. Your sources should be appropriately integrated into your discussion using signal phrases and source synthesis. Source usage should comprise an appropriate mix of summary and direct quotation. put this in my intro somewhere: I originally set out to write a paper about how peds affect the mental health of professional athletes. But as I researched I realized the question should be put differently. (social pressures, and teams use together, and the social environment is so high stress that athletes feel they dont have a choice but to take these drugs that so profoundly affect their physical health). So the question became: How does the mental health of professional athletes who are under so much mental pressure actually drive them to turn to PEDs as a mental health solution?

    Ideas for intro

-PED usage is not merely a medical issue that attends to the bodies of the users and the havoc wreaked by the drugs. Additionally, it is not an issue that can be summed up by league rules, compliance, and the number of wins. Rather, it needs to be understood in a social, cultural, and (political). (the social environment of the team, league, players and coaches setting up so much pressure and any other social problems you read about) and a sports culture that still sees the player as a body who should be willing to go to any extreme for a win for our entertainment and fails to see his full human complexity

-main idea A-how athletes develop poor mental health in their athletic environments

-main idea B-the cause and effect relationship between poor mental health and use of PEDs

  • Poetry

Write a 3-5 page, double spaced, MLA formatted essay on 3-4 poems we’ve read for class. Your essay should have a thesis statement that makes some kind of argumentative claim about your chosen poems. I’m not looking for just what you think a poem “means”. Rather, I’m looking for an analysis of observable choices made in the crafting of the poems. These include: Structures/forms, meter/rhythms, rhyme schemes, subjects, speakers, figurative language/poetic devices, themes, tone/mood, and/or syntax. Describe and explain what choices you observe in your body paragraphs. What effects are brought about? How does one choice (for example, a choice to have a poem rhyme vs not) interact with another (for example, the subject of the poem)? Or, what figurative language is used to help establish a certain tone or mood? These are examples of the kinds of questions you can make arguable claims about in your thesis statement, which you will support/defend in the rest of your essay.
  • proposal for more urban tree coverage in phoenix arizona

You should submit a draft of your Proposal Document here. As we have discussed, you should use the APA Proposal Template, so you will be building on the Abstract you have already submitted and the work you did in class on Friday. Your draft should have a title page, an abstract of 150 words or less, the proposal itself (beginning on page 3 and containing headings as provided), and a References page with at least 2 sources (also cited in text). Your document should be 1200-2000 words long in total.

    references

1-Mouratidis, K. (2019). The impact of urban tree cover on perceived safety. Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, 44, 126434.

This study examines the societal benefits of urban trees, focusing on their relationship with perceived neighborhood safety. Beyond environmental advantages such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity support, and improved air quality, the research analyzes survey, GIS, and statistical data from 1,344 residents across 45 neighborhoods in Oslo. The findings show a significant positive correlation between tree canopy cover and perceived safety.

would use this source in my proposal to demonstrate that increasing urban tree coverage provides broader benefits beyond shade and carbon reduction. Specifically, it supports the argument that expanding tree canopy in Arizona communities could improve residents sense of safety and overall quality of life

2-Lee, S. (2021). Does tree canopy moderate the association between neighborhood walkability and street crime?. Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, 65, 127336.

This study examines the relationship between walkability, tree canopy cover, and street crime in Austin, Texas. Using crime data from 20142018, Walk Score measurements, and tree canopy data, the researchers analyzed both violent and property crimes occurring on streets. The findings suggest that walkable neighborhoods can have both positive and negative effects on crime: increased street activity may deter crime through greater visibility (eyes on the street), but it can also increase anonymity and opportunity for criminal activity.

I would use this source in my proposal to strengthen the argument that urban tree coverage provides safety related benefits alongside environmental advantages. Specifically, this study supports the idea that while walkability can have mixed effects on crime.

This study examines how increasing street tree coverage can reduce heat exposure under future climate change scenarios in Vancouver. Using climate models and simulations, the researchers found that higher tree canopy significantly lowers mean radiant temperature (Tmrt), helping offset projected increases in extreme heat. The study concludes that expanding urban tree cover is an effective strategy for improving outdoor thermal comfort and reducing heat vulnerability.

    Music Festivals

We considered three music festivals as being touchpoints for the counter-culture in the 1960s (Monterey, Woodstock, and Altamont). Are there any music festivals in recent history that seem similar in that they represent a particular cultural movement (and aren’t just a traveling collection of bands)? Who do these festivals represent and how?

    example 1

I think a more recent festival that represents a cultural movement is Bayfest, which is held every year in Mission Beach. It brings some of the biggest reggae artists and has multiple days worth of performances. It really represents reggae and beach culture that a lot of people in San Diego connect with. The music, the location, and the people all come together to create a laid-back, community feeling instead of just a concert. It shows how festivals today can still represent a specific lifestyle and group of people, just in a more local and modern way.

    Example 2

As far as music festivals in recent history, I would say that Coachella and Rolling loud seem similar. They both are the culmination of artists over many genres coming together. These artists represent the music of this generation. I feel that Coachella represents the wealthy almost, as it is a lavish, stylish, and somewhat rich gathering. It seems like it represents luxury. Rolling loud however seems more of just musicians, but it is a huge part of musical culture. A lot of the most famous artists, especially in the rap scene go, and it signifies the feeling, and the youth in this generation.

    Example 3

In recent history there has been music festivals such as Dia De Los Deftones. Dia de los Deftones is an annual music festival that takes place at Petco Park. There are a variety of artists that range from different genres such as rap, electronic, to metal. This is paired with the cultural celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Many of the performers align with anti war and anti-fascist views and showing appreciation for the cultural holiday. The audience also align with these views and also express themselves with alternative fashion, cultural makeup and outfits, even a mix of both.

    Guitar Hero virtuosity

Considering the lecture on Guitar Heroes and Power Trios, the notion of virtuosity lies at the heart of both ideas. Can you identify other examples in which virtuosity is the most important aspect of the music? Does this type of virtuosity enhance music for you, or is it a less important quality? Have we moved beyond the “guitar hero” towards another type of preferred instrument?

    example 1

Virtuosity can be shown through alternative subgenres creating new enhanced sounds with technology. One thing I can think about is electronic bands. Each artist has their own way of making their music which sets it apart, but is building off of who they are inspired by. Having live sets and what they use for their performances. There are many ways to expand this genre through their sounds and technology they will use. I do think the “guitar hero” has been left in the past. I feel like we have moved on to another instrument to more of a synths and computers.

    Example 2

Virtuosity shows up in a lot of music outside of the classic guitar hero era with artists like Jimi Hendrix. In jazz, someone like John Coltrane made insane technical skill a huge part of the sound, and in classical music, performers like Niccol Paganini were celebrities because of how talented they were. I think virtuosity is very valuable when it actually adds emotion, but if its just showing off, it can get old. I also feel like weve kind of moved past the guitar hero and now producers and DJs are the new virtuosos since technology plays such a big role in music today.

    Example 3

I think virtuosity past guitar heroes and power trios is most important in the vocals. There are many powerhouse singers, such as Freddy Mercury, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion, to name a few. I think strong vocals are an extremely important quality in music and definitely enhance it.

I dont think we have completely moved beyond the guitar hero, but popular music has shifted toward a more computerized and electronic sound. Producers and digital technology now play a much bigger role in shaping hits. At the same time, the piano seems to be re-emerging as a preferred instrument in many genres, especially in pop and singer-songwriter styles.
