  • Learning Log responses

Each week for the first half of the semester, you’ll have a few questions to guide your reading of the texts. Write responses the questions on the Learning Log Worksheet, which can be accessed here. Note that you will have to save a copy of the original document in order to write your responses. You can then save your responses on the Learning Log Worksheet each week, and submit the entire document at midterm. You do not need to submit Learning Log responses every week. Only once per semester, at midterm. However, if you would like feedback on your weekly response, send it to my email in advance of the deadline. Detailed directions can be found on the Learning Log Worksheet. Please feel free to email if you have questions: jamichel@bmcc.cuny.edu.

Make the intro the same as the one that will be given and follow the thesis statement that is the last sentence. Each topic of the thesis statement should be 2 paragraphs. each paragraph should have 2 sources; 1 from Oedipus Rex and the other from an outside source. Topic: Personal Decisions vs. Fate Some characters are the masterminds of the lives, while others are led to their destiny by unyielding fate. Consider how the decisions of Oedipus from Sophocles play The Oedipus Rex affect the plot of the play. In your research paper, choose three protagonists and analyze whether the their decisions were dictated by fate or by their own personal choices. Then analyze how the outcome of their decisions contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole (theme). Intro: Throughout history, literature has often explored whether human lives are shaped more by personal decisions, or by things beyond human control. Many stories focus on characters who struggle against situations that seem impossible to avoid. This struggle creates tension and forces the audience to question whether the character would be able to overcome the situation. One of the biggest examples of this conflict appears in a Sophocles play Oedipus Rex. In this play, characters attempt to make choices that will protect their futures and loved ones. However, every attempt to try to avoid disaster ends up leading them to it. Throughout the play, it is revealed how human effort can fail when destiny is already determined. In Oedipus Rex, fate plays a major influence over what happens to the characters Oedipus, Jacasta, and Creon.
