In order to determine the appropriate purpose, audience, tone, and content in your own writing, you should be able to identify these aspects in other texts. For this discussion, I would like for you to turn to the world of advertising. Watch some commercials online or on television for the following products based on your individual pathway:

    • AHCD: Movie trailers
    • Business: Money lending services (e.g., J.G. Wentworth)
    • Education: Online colleges
    • Health Sciences: Prescription drugs
    • IMCT: Delivery services (e.g., Postmates)
    • Public Safety: Drunk driving PSAs
    • SBSHS: Dating websites/apps
    • STEM: Video game trailers

(Note: If you need more details about Broward College’s various career pathways, visit the “” webpage.)

Once you have done so, choose one of those ads and describe it for us in detail. Then, answer the following questions to help you determine the purpose, audience, tone, and point of view the commercial employs and the impact that these choices have on the advertisement.

    • What is the overall purpose of the commercial? First, ask yourself whether its meant to inform, persuade, entertain, or some combination. Provide specific examples of images or quotations from the ad that support your claim.
    • Who do you think the general audience of the advertisement is? Consider aspects like the audiences gender, age, social status/class, interests and hobbies, race and ethnicity, etc. Again, provide specific aspects of the commercial that reinforce your theory about its audience. Also, do you think that the ad reduces its appeal by leaving certain audiences out or applying only to audiences of a certain privilege? Why or why not?
    • What is the commercials overall tone or attitude toward its audience? Consider the ways in which wording, actors, imagery, color choice, music, and/or subject matter are used to establish the feeling or attitude of the ad. As usual, provide specific examples. Do you think that the commercials choice of tone limits its audience? Why or why not?
    • Lastly, what is the advertisements overall content? In other words, does the commercial incorporate music, imagery, statistics, testimonies, observations, personal anecdotes, illustrations, etc.? As before, provide specific examples. In your opinion, is the chosen content appropriate and engaging for the audience of the ad?

  • Exploratory Annotated Bibliography

An annotated bibliography asks you to find quality sources, to summarize them in light of the research topic/question that you are exploring this semester, to respond to their content, and to think about how you might use them in the research essays that you will write semester. Using the library resources you learned about in this week’s module, locate a total of TEN sources on the topic that you will be investigating. Remember that you MAY NOT change topics at this point. You must create an annotated bibliography for the topic/research question that was approved during the first week of this semester! Keep in mind: Your Annotated Bibliography should be formatted in the MLA style. Your sources may include books (print or e-books), academic journal articles, and popular sources (such as newspaper and magazine articles or transcripts of television broadcasts or short video clips from television news programs), but ALL must be found using the librarys databases, catalog, or EBSCOhost. No general web sources are allowed for this assignment. In other words, a random Google search won’t cut it! You will likely need to find and evaluate more than ten sources in order to find the best options for your essay. Please keep in mind that in your Exploratory Essay you will be presenting multiple points of view on the research topic. It will behoove you to find sources from a variety of different perspectives. Annotated Bibliography Directions: Create MLA-style citations for each source and put them in alphabetical order. Review “Annotated Bibliographies” on the Purdue OWL for more information about how to organize your annotated bibliography. You will write approximately 200-250 words about each source. Under each entry write: A one-paragraph summary of the source. Keep in mind this should be in your own words. You may not simply copy the articles abstract. A paragraph in which you respond to the authors claims. Do you agree? Disagree? A little of both? Why? A conclusion with a final paragraph that states how you might use this source in your Exploratory Essay. Which perspective/opinion on the research topic does this source explore? Why is this perspective important to understand your topic? At the end of your document, write a paragraph or two in which you reflect on the sources youve found. Incorporate answers to the following questions: How many points of view do you have? Do you have enough, or are there more perspectives that you should include? Which source is most factually convincing? Why? Which source is most balanced? Why? Which source has the greatest emotional impact? Why? Which source is most biased, exaggerated, or oversimplified? Why? Do you have enough information to write a convincing Exploratory Essay? If not, what do you still need to find? Do you think that any of the sources that you found when you were completing your research worksheet will be helpful when you begin drafting your Exploratory Essay? Which one? Please explain why you think this source text will be helpful.
