    First Literary Analysis Essay Assignment

    (Due Date: March 2, 2026)

Please choose ONE of the following topics. Your essay should be a minimum of 1,000

words (approximately 4 full pages), double-spaced, in MLA format.

This is a close reading assignment. No outside research is required. Your analysis

should focus on the language and structure of the poem(s).

    Option 1 Voice and Tone

Choose one poem longer than 12 lines from our assigned readings (for example: The

Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister, Ballad of the

Landlord, The Unknown Citizen, or one of the war poems). Analyze how the poem

    constructs its speakers voice.

  • How do diction, syntax, rhythm, or structure shape our understanding of the
  • speaker?

  • What does the tone reveal about the speakers emotional state, social position,
  • or worldview?

  • Does the poem employ multiple voices or shifts in perspective?
  • How do connotations of key words deepen meaning?
  • Suggestion: If analyzing Hughess Ballad of the Landlord, consider how multiple

voices (tenant, landlord, police, media) create social critique. If analyzing Browning or

Eliot, explore how the dramatic monologue form reveals psychological complexity.

    Option 2: Imagery and Meaning

Choose one or two poems from our syllabus that use especially vivid imagery (for

example: Owens Dulce et Decorum Est, Rosenbergs Break of Day in the Trenches,

or Eliots urban imagery in Prufrock). Analyze:

  • How does the poet create sensory images?
  • Do these images function symbolically or metaphorically?
  • How do denotative and connotative meanings contribute to larger themes?
  • Do the images challenge romanticized ideas (of war, love, patriotism, or urban
  • life)?

Your essay should move beyond identifying images and instead argue how imagery

    shapes the poems overall meaning.

Option 3: War Poetry and Anti-War Protest

Analyze how word choice, figurative language, and poetic devices contribute to the anti-

war message in Wilfred Owens Dulce et Decorum Est.

    You may:

  • Compare it briefly with another war poem from our unit (Brooke, Sassoon,
  • Rosenberg, etc.).

  • Discuss how irony, tone, or imagery dismantle patriotic rhetoric.
  • Argue whether the poem remains relevant in contemporary society.
  • Option 4: Urban Life and Social Critique

Compare two poems that critique urban or modern society (for example: Prufrock,

The Unknown Citizen, Ballad of the Landlord, or Larkins This Be the Verse).

  • How do the poets represent modern life?
  • What role do social class, bureaucracy, racism, or alienation play?
  • How does tone (satirical, melancholic, ironic) shape the critique?
  • Option 5: Gender and Modern Anxiety in Prufrock

In The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Eliot portrays strained and fragmented

interactions between men and women. Analyze how Eliot uses these gendered

    interactions to comment on:

  • Urban alienation
  • Social performance and insecurity
  • Masculinity and modern identity
  • Emotional paralysis
  • How do imagery, repetition, and fragmentation reinforce this critique?

  • Organization
  • Your essay should:

  • Present a clear, arguable thesis early in the paper.
  • Develop focused body paragraphs that support your thesis.
  • Include close readings of specific passages.
  • Integrate quotations smoothly and analyze them carefully (avoid excessive
  • quotation).

  • Conclude by reinforcing the significance of your argument.
  • Your thesis should make a specific claim about how the poem achieves meaning, not

    simply summarize its theme.

    You should include

    I. An original title (i.e., dont use the poets name or title of a poem as your

    title).

II. An introduction to what you will be discussing

A good introduction should identify your topic, provide essential

context, and indicate your particular focus in the essay.

III. Body paragraphs: A careful reading of the poem for what it says, how it

says it, and what the poet himself/herself wants the reader to see.

You should include an account of the poem to tell your

understanding of what the poet is saying. Therefore, you should

cite relevant lines from the poetry, and interpret them, as support

for the claims you are making about the poem, but do not over-rely

on excessive quotation. You should provide a discussion

comparing the poet’s views to your own.

    IV. Conclusion

Conclusions wrap up what you have been discussing in your paper.

After moving from general to specific information in the introduction

and body paragraphs, your conclusion should begin pulling back

into more general information that emphasizes the main points of

    your argument.

Claim: Practical Nursing Licensure should be a prerequisite for Associate Degree in Nursing

Reasons: Because studying and working as an LPN first gives nurses a firmer grasp on clinical skills and hands-on patient care.

Because practical nursing roles allow nurses to gain financial stability while furthering their education.

Because this will help to stabilize the nursing crisis by allowing new graduate nurses to fill roles sooner.

Assignment Directions: Using 3 credible sources you plan to use in your Unit 3 Argumentative Research Paper, respond to the prompts below in order to demonstrate that they are appropriate for use as supporting evidence.

    Source #1 – Title:

    1. Given the above evaluation, briefly explain why this is an appropriate source for your research project. Be specific, and use complete sentences.

McCloskey et al. (2023) present the best quality of qualitative evidence of LPN experience that is used as the base of RN education. This evidence-based review of 24 articles shows that successfully graduated bridging program nurses attain growth through professional development and move to registered nurse positions, even though they are challenged by responsibility balancing. The observation that bridging students, being adult learners with previous nursing experience, are more likely to expect to get increased support and expect greater levels of clinical expertise, hints at an LPN background offering valuable background information and increased demands on nursing education. The conclusion of the review that bridging students can eventually reach growth via personal and professional progress on completion of the program and being a registered nurse directly proves the arguments that LPN experience is a valid prerequisite for advanced nursing education.

    Relevance

How does the information relate to your topic or answer your question?

The article directly tests the transfer of BSN programs into accelerated BSN, whether they have prepared nurses to be ready to practice or not, with special emphasis on practice readiness and transition experience. Although it does not explicitly refer to LPN-to-ADN pathways, because the study focuses on the role of previous experience and educational design in preparing LPNs to practice on the next level, it is connected to the argument on whether LPN experience is beneficial in obtaining preparation to practice in higher nursing levels. The emphasis on adult training and education of a heterogeneous population that moves toward professional practice offers some knowledge that can be applied to LPN-to-RN pathways.

The research focuses on the experience of new graduates and determining how transition support could be enhanced.

    1. Given the above evaluation, briefly explain why this is an appropriate source for your research project. Be specific, and use complete sentences.

The study by Wiersma et al. (2020) contributes to the existing knowledge regarding the impact of educational preparation on the readiness to practice and effective transition to professional positions among new nurses. The conclusion of the study that graduates emerged with three central themes: Practice Readiness, Work-Related Environmental Influences, and Being a Nurse, provides evidence regarding the factors within the nursing education that result in effective practice outcomes. Although the research focuses on accelerated BSN programs as opposed to the LPN-to-ADN pathways, the focus on the adult learners with various backgrounds switching to the professional nursing practice correlates with the arguments that the LPN experience prepares them to hold advanced work. The emphasis of the study on the definition of the educational aids that can be used to achieve the successful transition can serve as the frame of the conceptualization of how the previous practical nursing experience and education could lead to the increased preparedness to practice as an RN. This source will add evidence to the arguments needed to prove that LPN experience can be a good foundation on which ADN programs can be based, especially in terms of the importance of prior clinical experience and adult learning attitudes. Published in an authoritative nursing education journal, this reference will add to the evidence on practice preparedness and transition experiences that can inform arguments about whether LPN experience should be considered a helpful foundation on which to base ADN programs.

    Relevance

How does the information relate to your topic or answer your question?

It supports the idea that LPNs have real value due to hands on clinical experience, strengthened patient care skills and higher confidence entering RN training. So from this perspective requiring LPN licensure first could be seen as creating more experienced, practice-ready ADN students. It can also support the opposite argument by suggesting LPNs are already complete and a valuable part of the workforce making it a requirement could be unnecessary. Requiring LPN first could slow down entry into RN roles during shortages.

    1. Given the above evaluation, briefly explain why this is an appropriate source for your research project. Be specific, and use complete sentences.

This is an appropriate source for the paper on whether LPN licensure should be a prerequisite to an ADN because of its focus on the role of LPNs in the workforce providing evidence based practice discussion about their training, value and place in healthcare which directly correlates to the idea of using LPN experience as a foundation for advancing to RN education.

Next i will upload the comparitive essay that has parts that should be used in the argumentative essay

Should LPN Be a Prerequisite to ADN

The United States is currently confronted with the worst workforce crisis in the nursing profession in history. Community health organizations, long-term care, and hospitals continue to face staffing issues, which jeopardize patient safety and the well-being of nurses. As the healthcare leaders struggle to find long-term solutions, a new focus has been given to the nursing education pathway and its role in producing a ready workforce. One of the proposals that is gaining momentum is the question of whether one has to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to be able to get an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). This question raises critical issues connected with the provision of workforce, educational readiness, and quality of care. To examine this, the paper will integrate the insights of two primary academic materials that discuss the nursing shortage and minimum standards of nursing practice, and draw on the research on the obstacles and factors promoting LPNs to seek further education. The research indicates that the mandatory LPN licensure before ADN education may serve as a way to fill the nursing pipeline, support the standard of the profession, and work to overcome the nursing shortage in the country.

Understanding the Nursing Shortage and Educational Pathways

The nursing shortage has already reached the level of crisis, according to many scholars, as a result of an aging workforce, the growth of patient acuity, and a lack of capacity to educate more nurses. Traditional and BSN programs tend to be full-time programs in terms of academic dedication, which restricts the working opportunities of the students. This structure can slow down the workforce onboarding time and decrease the supply of nurses to offer care in the training years. In contrast, the LPN route provides the student with an opportunity to join the workforce sooner, with the advantage of acquiring basic clinical experience. Advancing LPN licensure requirements, followed by ADN education, may enable students to participate in patient care sooner and help develop competence and confidence before becoming registered nurses.

Educational avenues are more than just a question of logistics but also a question of ethics, because staffing deficits have a direct impact on patient outcomes. The preparation, support, and transitioning of nurses to practice are important regarding both the safety and sustainability. A review of the academic angles on the perspective of workforce advancement and provisions of care assists in elucidating whether the LPN-to-ADN direction ought to be concretized as a requirement instead of an option. Instead of having to wait two years after ADN graduates join the workforce, healthcare facilities can receive LPN-level assistance, and the same individuals will advance to reach the status of RN licensure.

Perspectives on Addressing the Nursing Shortage

The research identified key measures of workforce shortage resolution, and the creation of educational pipelines became one of the main recommendations offered by practical nurses themselves. Harnois-Church et al. (2024) offer an up-to-date and practice-based approach to the nursing shortage by lending a voice to the nurses. Their analysis is based on statewide listening sessions with over 460 nurses, which provides them with a qualitative understanding of what frontline professionals consider can be done to stabilize and strengthen the workforce. A significant theme that was observed was the necessity of developing new educational pipelines and increasing the number of educational pipelines in nursing. Nurses focused more on new academic models that enable students to join practice earlier and keep advancing their studies, instead of having to wait until the program is finished to start working(Harnois-Church et al., 2024).

The LPN licensure as a requirement before an ADN education is highly encouraged under this worldview. This will provide the healthcare systems with an extra workforce and allow the students to earn money, experience, and… [Content truncated to 3000 words]

  • Research Paper

Your research paper should be an argumentative essay that makes a specific claim about some aspect(s) of 2-3 of the literary works assigned in class. The claim should incorporate some specific school of literary theory discussed in class. Support this claim and argument in a coherent, developed, and organized essay of 1500 words or more and must also successfully use at least 3 critical secondary sources accessed through the relevant GMC Library databases.

Make sure your thesis is one that is arguable and requires research to effectively answer or prove.

Literary works are “Mother” and “Adventure” by Sherwood Anderson.

3 critical secondary sources are Atlas, Marilyn Judith. Sherwood Anderson and the Women of Winesburg, Xiao, Ningshuang, and Hongbin Dai. The Loss of Dream, Love and Words of Women: A Brief Analysis of Three Female Characters in Winesburg, Ohio. , and Zihan, Qian. Sherwood Andersons Feminine Consciousness Embodied in MotherConcerning Elizabeth Willard.

    starting point

As I am brainstorming for my final research paper, I think I am going to focus on Sherwood Anderson’s stories Adventure and Mother. These two stories were very detailed and related in a lot of ways. They both focused on gender and repression. For my paper I will focus on how Anderson portrays women trapped within restrictive social expectations and how emotional and/or sexual repression shapes their identities. This paper will be a feminist literacy criticism. A possible research question I might use is How does Sherwood Anderson use Alice Hindman and Elizabeth Willard to show how small-town society limits women, and what does their unhappiness and bottled-up emotions say about life in Winesburg, Ohio? A working thesis statement for me right now is In Adventure and Mother, Anderson shows how strict small-town gender roles trap women and damage their sense of self. I will work to make it more nuanced but this is my starting point.
