  • Animated short film

Watch this short animated film, Man:

which artistically (and cynically) explores mans relationship with the natural world.

Post your reactions in the discussion using the following prompts as guides:

    • Do you agree with this interpretation of man’s impact on the Natural Capitol of the land?
    • If yes, why? If no, why not?
    • What drives the “man” in the film to destroy? What is the main point the filmmaker is trying to relay to us?
    • Did any scene or scenes bother or shock you? Or make you laugh? Or both? Explain.
    • Do films like this have an impact for change?
    • Would you recommend this film to others as a tool to demonstrate our impacts on the Earth?

NO MINIMUM WORD/PAGE REQUIREMENT, JUST BE SURE TO FULLY ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

  • Scientific Method

    Read the Article:

These researchers developed a research question that came from observations of an environmental science problem in a community. They then designed an experiment to collect data/information to answer their question. Highly creative and interesting project! Dont you think?

The scientists knew that other research in predator/prey relationships showed that A number of small animals, including butterflies and frogs, sport large, intimidating eyespots. These eyespots scare away predators, perhaps by disorienting them, or tricking them into thinking their would-be prey is actually a different, larger animal

So, they creatively thought: Would this also work in this situation: to protect cows from predators? Lets try it!

The researchers then wrote their experiment and results in a scientific article and published it in a professional journal so others could learn and repeat the same experiment.

Next: Read their published scientific article:

Artificial eyespots on cattle reduce predation by large carnivores

Think about the Scientific Method – How Science Works diagram while reading it.

Can you find each step? Compare the style of writing in the magazine article with the journal article. Ask yourself: How and Why are they different? Why is the title different?

    Assignment

Submit a two page reflection/ comprehension of the readings as a docx or pdf

Analysis must include (but not limited to) the following writing prompts

    • Briefly summarize the articles
    • Explain your overall response to the readings- what interested you, anything difficult or puzzling?
    • Compare the style of writing in the magazine article with the journal article. How and Why are they different? Why is the title different? Why couldn’t they have just published the scientific journal article?
    • Any further questions you have about their research that have stemmed from the readings?

    Then

Answer the following questions while using the How Science Works diagram- the questions follow the diagram from top to bottom- working through the Scientific Method.

    • What was the practical problem and motivation for the eye spot research?
    • What were the observations they had and questions they proposed? This might be similar to #1 thats ok.
    • What was the hypothesis – how did they use prior knowledge and previous research (think of eyespots on other animals)
    • How did they gather data (the method?)
    • What were the results of the experiment?
    • The results/research was published. Yay! Did it reveal new questions? Is further research needed? Why?
    • Any Benefits to the community? Did this science solve an everyday problem? Did they address a societal issue? Did they build on existing knowledge?

Grade includes: the ability to articulate your responses professionally, use of correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. So in other words this is not a text message or an email response, but a formal mini paper that demonstrates your understanding of the readings and the method.

    Unit 1 Reflection

Case Study 1.1 in your book states: ” Climate change is the most pressing environmental health issue for the 21st century.”

In what way, or ways, will climate change impact environmental health in the 21st century?

Find three examples from the sources below (or other sources you find) and provide data that support each using the “Explore Our Data.” Data can include statistics about trends in environmental or health measures (e.g. disease rates, crop production, etc.). You should include a graphic for each measure. Provide a short paragraph for each example, that summarizes, in your own words, the data presented. I’ve provided an example of one below.

    Example:

Example of an Environmental Health impact of Climate Change:

One way that climate change might impact environmental health is through deaths due to air pollution. Climate change is driven by anthropogenic production of greenhouse gasses. However, those same sources produce air pollution, especially particulate matter less than 2.5 micro-meters (PM2.5). This graphic shows that mortality due PM2.5 in different income regions. Mortality due to biomass burning is much higher in low-income regions than in high income areas, but mortalities due to air pollution caused by industry, transportation, and agriculture are more important in high and very-high income countries. Interestingly, coal burning is a major source of air pollution in medium-income countries and lower in high and very-high regions. This may be due to use of other sources of energy for electricity (solar, wind, nuclear, etc.) or cleaner coal burning technologies. Also interesting, is the overall decrease in air-pollution related mortality (decreased 6.9%) between 2016 and 2019, mostly in higher income countries, and which appears to be related to a decrease in coal-based power plants.

  • Summative Assessment: Ethics Motivation Analysis

As you continue in your studies of environmental science, it is important to consider various stakeholders and their motivations and behaviors with respect to environmental initiatives. A strong understanding of the motivations of stakeholders will support your ability to impact positive environmental outcomes. In this assessment, use your understanding of anthropocentric and biocentric rationale to analyze how different lenses might impact a persons level of engagement in an environmental effort.

In SUS/300: Environmental Sustainability, you completed a stakeholder environmental motivation analysis. It may be helpful to reference that assessment as a starting point for updating this stakeholder motivation analysis. This analysis could serve as a deliverable to demonstrate to future employers your ability to understand factors that motivate stakeholders in projects.

Identify and research one (1) sustainability-related effort that interests you.

Use your reflection, which you created in the Wk 1 Summative Assessment: Meta-analysis Model Construction, to imagine how you, as a stakeholder, would engage in the sustainability effort you identified for this weeks assessment. Try to consider only the knowledge and experiences you had at Week 1.

Reflect on how your thoughts and ideas about environmental ethics have changed throughout this course. Discuss these changes and imagine how you, as a stakeholder, with all the knowledge and experiences you have gained throughout this course, would engage in the sustainability effort you identified.

Create a 1,050- to 1,225-word report (essay body content; title and references pages not included in word-count) in which you analyze the different motivations of the stakeholder to engage in your selected sustainability effort. Include the following in your analysis:

Use the following headings / subheadings and address all bullet points:

Suggestion / recommendation – Use a separate paragraph for each bullet.

    • Sustainability Effort
    • Describe the sustainability effort you selected.
    • Explain your rationale for selecting that sustainability effort.
    • Your View of Environmental Ethics
    • Analyze your Week 1 selfs view of environmental ethics and how that would impact your ability and motivation to engage in the sustainability effort.
    • Analyze your Week 5 selfs view of environmental ethics and how that would impact their ability and motivation to engage in the sustainability effort.
    • Analyze how the changes in your view of environmental ethics over the five weeks would impact your ability and motivation to engage in sustainability efforts.
    • Reflect on what changed or reinforced your previous views of environmental ethics
    • Recommendations for Supporting Different Ethical Views
    • Provide recommendations for what you, as an environmental scientist, can do to understand people with varied environmental ethical views.
    • Provide recommendations for enhancing their ability and motivation to engage in the sustainability effort.
    • Comparing Differing Rationales
    • Compare anthropocentric and biocentric rationales.
    • Evaluate how anthropocentric and biocentric rationale will impact human motivation to engage in sustainability efforts.

Use your personal works, as listed above, course textbook, and at least two (5) external resources.

Use headings and subheadings (see above) for essay organization.

Use APA formatting, including approved APA font style and size, essay body citations, double line spacing, and title and references pages.

Submit your assignment as a Word or pdf file.

    = = = = =

Note: Meet the required word-count to be eligible for an optimized grade.

Penalties / point deductions: Incomplete/erroneous/missing headings and content (bullet prompts), incorrect line spacing, missing citations, references, and title page.
