  • SCI 333 Milestone 3

    Prompt

Read and review three scholarly articles that are relevant to the issue you described in Milestone Two. The articles should provide information (i.e., production, use, disposal, and/or societal impact) on the waste you are focusing on and they must be from recognized, research-oriented academic journals. In your paper, include a one-paragraph abstract or summary of each article (minimum 300 words each). In the summary, be sure to summarize the article and explain the relevance of the article to your project. Provide a correct citation for each article. (Note: You will need to complete additional research for your final paper.)

Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed:

    1. Summary: For each article, summarize the article, explain why you chose the article, and describe how the article relates to your chosen issue.
    2. Application: Explain how the article applies directly to the waste issue selected for your final project. Be sure to include information regarding production, use, disposal, and/or societal impact.
    3. Reference list: This should contain at least three scholarly, relevant, and credible research sources, one of which is a primary source.

    What to Submit

Your submission must be 34 pages in length (plus a cover page and references) and must be written in APA format. Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Include at least three references cited in APA format.

  • Species Interactions

One of the most important relationships in an ecosystem is how organisms create or consume their food. These interactions are known as trophic relationships and can be illustrated in a food chain or food web. While at first glance a food chain may seem like a simple representation of food consumption, these relationships have important impacts throughout the ecosystem. These interactions become even more apparent when a species is eliminated from the system, such as when European settlers in North America systematically exterminated the top predators such as wolves. In this assignment, you will explore how trophic interactions ripple through an ecosystem.

By the mid-1900s, wolves had been almost entirely removed from the continental United States, including in Yellowstone National Park. In the 1970s, passage of the Endangered Species Act and increasing environmental awareness raised the issue of wolf management for both natural resource managers and the public. Then, in 1995, wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. For the past few decades, the impacts of the new wolves have been monitored. You can learn more about the impacts of wolves in the park with this video.

    • Wolves of Yellowstone [Video]. (2014). In Passion Pictures (Producer), Earth: A new wild.

For this assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation that discusses a food chain of your choice and how the species in that food chain interact with each other and their environment. Using the resources provided, your textbook, as well as other reliable references, answer the following questions in your presentation. is provided to assist you with organizing your information.

    1. Identify and research one simple food chain from anywhere in the world. Outline the food chain and briefly describe it including where this food chain can be found. Include a minimum of 4 species in your food chain.
    2. Identify one predator-prey relationship in your food chain.
    3. Which organism is the predator and which is the prey?
    4. What level of the food chain does each organism hold (i.e., primary consumer, secondary consumer, etc.)?
    5. What would happen to your food chain and ecosystem if the predator was removed?
    6. Now imagine that an invasive plant species takes hold in your ecosystem.
    7. How would this invasive species impact the food chain and ecosystem?
    8. Describe impacts to producers and consumers.
    9. Extinctions and invasive species can reduce biodiversity. Human activities are largely responsible for these issues. What are some ways that we can protect and enhance biodiversity? Include at least one example and explain.
    10. Predator reintroductions are a controversial practice. Bringing wolves back to Yellowstone National Park was met with many concerns and challenges.
    11. Do you think that reintroduction of predators is the responsibility of humans?
    12. What are the benefits of predator reintroductions? Include at least two benefits and explain.
    13. What are some challenges of predator reintroductions? Include at least two challenges and explain.
  • Terrestrial Ecosystems

    Unit 2: Terrestrial Ecosystems

In this unit, you will discover various land-based ecosystems and the ecosystem components that comprise them.

    Post 1: Initial Response

Terrestrial ecosystems, from tropical rainforests to arid deserts, represent a wide array of ecological communities with unique characteristics and dynamics. These ecosystems are shaped by various biotic and abiotic factors, and they play critical roles in global biodiversity, climate regulation, and human well-being.

Using your textbook, the PG Library, and other reliable references, answer the following questions:

    1. Choose one type of terrestrial ecosystem (e.g., temperate forest, grassland, tundra, desert).
    2. Describe its key characteristics, including climate, soil type, predominant vegetation, and animal life.
    3. Discuss how these factors interact to create a unique ecological community.
    4. Identify and explain at least two essential ecosystem services provided by your chosen terrestrial ecosystem. How do these services benefit humans and other organisms?
    5. Discuss how human activities (e.g., deforestation, agriculture, urbanization) are impacting your chosen ecosystem. Provide specific examples of both positive and negative impacts.
    6. Suggest at least one conservation or management strategy that could help protect or restore the ecosystem you have chosen. Explain how this strategy addresses the specific challenges faced by the ecosystem.

Let’s go with desert as the terrestrial ecosystem

  • Electric vehicles and climate change

[Student Name] Instructions: Replace the example wording in brackets below with your wording for each prompt. IND101 Milestone 4 Template 1. Paraphrasing activity: Quote from source (at least 5 sentences): [Example: The transition to electrification of vehicles will probably be gradual, for three primary reasons: consumer caution when it comes to large purchases, the high initial cost of manufacturing electric vehicles, and pushback from vested interests. There will be special circumstances, such as in Norway, where rapid transitions are possible. But in places such as the United States, where the automotive market is large and diverse, and many players are involvedincluding the thousands of cities and states that impose rules and offer incentivesthe pace will be slower. Cost reductions will take time. Gasoline cars have benefited from a century of intensive development, while electric cars have been the focus of major manufacturers on a commercial scale only since about 2010 (Sperling, 2018, p. 15).] Paraphrase of the quote above (2-3 sentences): [Example: The shift from traditional vehicles to EVs (electric vehicles) was rapid in Norway, but the same pace is not expected in the United States, which has a much higher population, state and local laws to contend with, and a large and diverse auto industry. In addition, consumers are often hesitant about large purchases. This hesitance, along with the high costs for EV production, and pressure from oppositional groups, will slow the transition. While the cost of EV production will eventually decrease, this will take time; in comparison to gas-powered cars long history, EVs have only been widely available since 2010 (Sperling, 2018).] 2. Integrating a short quote activity: [Example: As Sperling (2018) argues, petroleum-powered motor vehicles are a major contributor to climate change, emitting about 20 percent of all greenhouse gases worldwide (p. 12). Reducing reliance on gasoline-powered vehicles by investing in the shift to electric vehicles can have a significant impact on climate change.] 3.
